When a woman dresses for herself and not to impress others it is unmistakable. There is no pretense, just simplicity, functionality and elegance.

Effortless is an adjective that many of us strive for in our personal style.

But the exact definition of effortless when it pertains to style will vary between individuals.

What it doesn’t mean is to look like you have given up and put in zero effort. That isn’t how that word works when we are talking about style.

Effortless style is uncomplicated, ease, and seamless.

An effortless wardrobe means that you can grab any pieces that you have thrown on your clothes chair and it will easily make an outfit.

You know the clothes chair? The place where you put everything that needs to be hung up, but you have not got around to it yet.

An effortless wardrobe means you don’t need to think about what you are going to wear.

You can just go to your wardrobe and grab items and everything should work in a seamless and uncomplicated way.

We want to get to that level of being comfortable with our style, that our wardrobe is now a complimentary reflection of one another.

Every individual piece is friends with the next, and they all work together effortlessly to make your life easier and make you look and feel like the best version of yourself.

To do that today I am using the influence of a designer who was the epitome of effortless.

Most of you know the name Phoebe Philo, and if you do you are also aware of her influence as the woman who was behind the biggest trends to hit our wardrobes since the early Noughties.

Last year was hugely popular with dopamine dressing which embraced colour in a way we hadn’t seen for a long time.

This was the effect of the previous couple of years when we were lost in a sea of neutrals.

This year we are seeing a lot of 90s minimalism looks.

Simplicity, ease, minimal, chic, and effortless.

Some are calling it the Phoebe Philo effect because she is coming out with a line after her hiatus after leaving Celine.

It has been a long time coming, and I feel like the world of fashion has been waiting for her.

So many of the people who were directly influenced by the cool minimalism of her relaxed tailoring still dress the same today with no intention of changing.

She was that good, and that timeless.

This post is in homage to her for the new way she made us think about fashion.

She spoke to women’s interests through clothes, and brought in a new sense of ease for dressing at home and in the workplace, which prioritized character and comfort.

She stated back in 2009 at her Celine debut that it felt better for her to work on an idea of a wardrobe than trends.

She wanted her pieces to stand the test of time which is why we still love wide-leg trousers paired with sneakers, oversized cuffed shirting, camel coats, and big clutches.

Where most designers work within a theme and fantasy, Phoebe Philo works with the feelings that are connected to women’s daily lives.

The result is realness. Things we can wear right off the runway and into our normal lives.

This is why we love her.

Her designs reflect how women want to dress in a natural way.

Which is what we have been waiting for.

  1. Great inspiration for an upcoming 3 week trip to France. Love the color combos and also reminds me not to just take black and white to “make it easy.”

  2. So true that it’s great when your pieces play nicely together. I love pops of colour. Just as fireworks look great against the night sky, those pops light up my neutrals. I have learned from your posts that accessories are a good way to achieve this.
