This is a huge title today, but I needed it to convey this post. I was working on a spring capsule wardrobe earlier this week, and it wasn’t going the way I wanted, so I scrapped it.

I was having a conversation about style adjectives earlier this week, and by the questions, I get regarding personal style, many of you are still having a hard time determining yours.

So for an example, I thought that I would demonstrate using my style adjectives which are classic, casual, and unexpected.

Remember that it is not always about the individual piece that has the characteristics for me. It is about how the piece is worn and styled as well.

You can make things casual, classic, or unexpected just by the way that you wear it.

An outfit that consists of the same pieces will look different on different people. That’s because their personal style will affect the way they wear the item, and even the fit of the item.

One may size up for a relaxed look, while another might size down for fitted. No outfit formula will ever look the same on different people which is something to keep in mind.

Even when embracing trends I gravitate to versions of the trend that suit my style.

For example the Adidas Sambas.

A huge trend and because of this are really hard to find.

If you do find them it is often on those retail sites with third-party sellers who take advantage of their scarcity and jack the price.

I originally wanted the black Sambas and had signed up for all the stock notifications I could, but then I came across the Sambas in red which is technically not the trend but is the version that actually resonates and is well suited for my personal style.

So I got them, and I love them, and I am no longer searching for the black Sambas. I have black Gazelles from many years ago that will work in the place that I had designated for black sneakers anyway.

Win, win.

Next are cargos.

I haven’t gotten on board with this trend, and I also realized that I didn’t wear it the first time in the late 90s and early aughts either because I always felt not quite like me in them.

And the most important thing with personal style is to unequivocally feel like yourself.

Then I saw the cargos that I included in this post that are baggy, and in a kind of acid wash grey/black, and I thought, “hmmm, those have the right amount of unexpected that I actually think I would wear them.”

Plus, they have rave reviews which is a major plus.

I used an oversized bomber jacket in this spring capsule wardrobe because it adds the right amount of unexpected and casual.

Also, the Frankie Shop Astra Bomber is an IT jacket of the season and this Zara one is a much less expensive alternative.

Is it becoming clearer?

How do you find your style adjectives?

Style adjectives are the words that you use to describe your style.

To find your style adjectives, I often suggest making a Pinterest board to gather a collection of looks and pieces that you are drawn to and want to dress like.

After you gather those looks here are some other steps that will guide you into finding your style adjectives:

Look at your wardrobe and pull out your favourite pieces. The pieces that you wear most often, and the pieces that you feel best in. Pay attention to the colours, textures, and patterns that you tend to gravitate towards.

Identify any recurring themes. Look for common themes or patterns. Do you prefer minimalist designs, bold patterns, or vintage styles? Do you tend to wear bright colours or neutrals?

Use descriptive words to connect these themes.

Once you have identified some common themes, try to use descriptive words to capture your preferences. You might describe your style as bohemian, classic, edgy, sophisticated, quirky, or casual.

If you’re still struggling to find the right style adjectives or uncertain if the ones that you chose are fitting ask for feedback.

Ask friends or family members, you can even post outfits anonymously on Reddit fashion forums where other people may be able to offer insights into your personal style that you hadn’t considered before.

They may come up with adjectives that you never thought of.

Once you figure it out you will notice how these words tie to all your future purchases.

Because once you see the adjectives come into play you will start to notice and gravitate to pieces that fit into that.

Then building your wardrobe becomes easier because you will now be buying with intention, and when you buy with intention your wardrobe starts to work together as a cohesive unit instead of separately which is often why you can have tons of clothes but nothing to wear.

Intentional purchases is the long-term goal for building a versatile wardrobe.

Remember, your personal style is unique to you.

Building a wardrobe is a journey, not a destination.

  1. Sara I am such a fan of your style and have already purchased a couple of your specific capsules. I still don’t know what my “words” are, but the perfect wardrobe for me would be found if a boy and girl set of twins (I’m five feet tall) threw their clothing on my street such that they took on a dusty and dirty hue, and I mixed the masculine and feminine items to make outfits. There!

    • Thank you so much! It sounds like maybe some words you might consider would be chill/casual/or effortless, and maybe androgynous because of the masculine and feminine blend. But then something else that would make it not completely androgynous if that makes sense. Like chic, or pretty, cute, refined, polished, funky, quirky. You can have adjectives that actually feel like they would cancel each other out like masculine, and feminine. It just means that many of your choices have masculine touches but mixed with feminine. Like I’ll pair men’s trousers, with a lacy shirt and men’s oxford shoes for example. It’s a long process of figuring it out but you sound like you have a good idea of what your drawn to which is way ahead of many people. Let me know if I can help!
