Every season I think that I always look forward to the edgy capsule wardrobe the most. Probably because it resonates with me, and I find selecting pieces for this particular capsule wardrobe to be almost like picking items for and from my own closet.

I don’t categorize my particular style as edgy per se but edgy is multifaceted.

An edgy wardrobe for a teen is going to have a completely different meaning than for an adult and there are so many ways to carry out this look.

By definition, an edgy style reflects the idea of unconventional and different. You need to think of it in terms of bold, defiant and cool being a good selection of adjectives.

But you can also have tamer adjectives and incorporate edgy as being one.

If you are not familiar with the use of three adjectives to describe your style versus falling under one of the traditional categories that we are used to, you should try it.

I find that it is a more in depth way to view your personal style since style is pretty fluid.

Most people have an influence of different styles in their daily looks and some days, certain ones will prevail over others.

If you want to learn more about using your style adjectives to build your wardrobe then you can check out this post where I wrote about it in more depth.

Women with an edgy style aesthetic are not afraid to take risks with their wardrobe choices, but edgy isn’t always about the way a particular piece looks.

Yes, a leather jacket that is oversized with fringe is edgier than a traditional fitted moto but edgy is also about the way that you combine pieces to get your overall look.

You can look edgy while wearing just basic jeans and a t-shirt buy simply paying attention to details. It can be the way you cuff your pants, the proportions, your shoes or boots, purse, or accessories.

Maybe it is the fabrics of the items, or the colour.

It is how you wear them that changes the look. A string of pearls on one person looks refined, and classic. Give those pearls to another person and they may wrap them differently, add some layers of other jewellery, add a pin or brooch to the necklace, knot them, or wear them as a bracelet.

Any of these are going to give a completely different feel than person number one, and it is all about wearing things in a way to express your personal style.

My adjectives are classic, casual/chill, and unexpected.

It feels right and compete when I dress to my adjectives, so this capsule wardrobe is for anyone that feels like they are drawn to the unexpected, or likes a little bit of edge to their looks.

Many of these pieces are things that look like a classic or basic pieces but have a quality that makes them a little edgier or unexpected.

For example, the knit turtleneck tank has padded shoulders, the turtleneck is striped in a non-traditional colour pairing, the blue shirt has some neck details that give it something extra, the black long sleeve has ruching and slightly sheer fabric, and the white button up isn’t a standard button up, it is collarless and has gathered sleeves.

I’ll keep going.

The colour of the bright blue sweater, the grey cashmere sweater is cropped, and the pink hoody has a bold colour, and is also cropped with a drawstring waist.

The trousers have a small fringe trim, dark jeans that fit looser with a large cuff, a rosette pin in leather (which I bought and is on the way), a bright pink fringe clutch, and animal print shoes.

I feel like you get the idea.

Each of these pieces individually has a little something outside the box and when paired with the other pieces they just work.

And it is the pairing of unusual pieces that also brings some unexpected edge.

If you are looking to make your wardrobe edgier than you will need to get comfortable stepping outside the box because you want confidence when wearing them.

Confidence in dressing comes from knowing your style, and feeling good in what you are wearing.

If you feel uncomfortable, or not like yourself then it will show.

Sometimes this is a simple fix of switching things around a bit, or adding some extra touches until it feels like you.

If you are drawn to edgy fashion, you most likely are creative or think creatively. You are a complex person but understand fundamentally who you are.

You probably dress on a scale, where it slides more one way on certain days than the other and that is why it is important to build a wardrobe that is fully functional for you.

Some days you may feel more experimental, and you need those things in your wardrobe that will fulfill that need.

Developing personal style is to develop a wardrobe that works for you. Always. For years.

When you figure this out you will buy less and find that your dress with more focus.

Once you really nail that personal style, building a wardrobe that reflects that will come more naturally because you are now aware.

Every purchase you make, and every outfit you put together are done with your style in mind, and after you really get the hang of it, everything new that you bring in should integrate seamlessly with what you already have.

That is the benefit of understanding your style.

Your wardrobe will completely mix and match, and should be able to accommodate every mood you have on that sliding scale of style.

Your closet will have range without losing your sense of style which will make the clothes work for you, not against you.

And that is the ultimate goal.

  1. I love this wardrobe! I especially love that it’s edgy but also colorful and fun. Usually when I search for examples of edgy styles, they’re mostly made up of black clothes so it’s awesome to see some more colorful ideas. Thanks!

    • Thank you. Black always seems like the easy and obvious choice and I wanted to challenge myself while also showing that it’s not always about the piece, but how you combine them. I find that playing with colour is an important part of having a versatile and diverse wardrobe.
