When I titled this The Ultimate Spring Capsule Wardrobe, I used the word ultimate loosely since each individual’s wardrobe needs will differ.

To me, in my four season climate this is a collection of items that I consider spring wardrobe essentials that will transition you from winter, to spring, and even some into the summer.

Summer is the only season that I can’t carry my entire wardrobe over.

It is also the season that I spend the least amount on clothes since I actually hate it and find I lack inspiration during those hot months.

But spring I do like, and it is spring fashion we are talking about today.

I put together a nice foundation of wardrobe basics and added a few of the key spring trends that I am participating in this season to keep it modern and fresh.

Spring Wardrobe Basics:

  • A few pairs of jeans in different washes and cuts
  • A couple of sweaters in a nice knit
  • The black dress
  • Trousers in different colours and fits, with at least one in black or navy
  • Button up, t-shirt, and turtleneck
  • Trench coat
  • Blazer
  • sneakers, flats, and heels

Within those basics you can also use trend pieces and elements or stick to classics.

I also like to look for basics that have unique characteristics.

For example, instead of a basic scoop neck, striped long sleeve, I chose a slightly off-shoulder V, that has stripes that resemble a starburst when worn.

The flats are ballet with a strap which is both a basic/classic piece, and also a current spring trend.

The sneakers I chose are the Onitsuka Tigers which are having a moment as well. A moment that I personally think will get even bigger as spring and summer go forward.

The Mexico 66 model are the most sought after, you might remember the yellow and black pair that Uma Thurman wore in Kill Bill?

Yes? They are making rounds again.

I ordered a pair of Onitsuka Tigers in blue last week. I saw them while actually searching for something else, and I loved them immediately and also immediatley forget what I was looking for.

They aren’t the Mexico 66, they are the Traxy model, but I love the colour and the retro style which Onitsuka are famous for.

The style is unisex, but the smallest they had was a men’s 7 so that is the size I ordered.

They are low-profile sneakers like the Adidas that I recently bought, and I got a 7.5 in those which fit like an 8/8.5, so I figure I am good with a 7.

I am a sneaker person. I especially love colourful ones, they are such a fun and easy way to liven up a basic or neutral outfit.

Anyway, next on the trend list is the denim maxi skirt.

Both denim skirts and maxi skirts are a spring trend, and this denim maxi hits both. You could easily get a denim midi, and a maxi in a different fabric and colour if you like having a variety of skirts.

I am not a huge skirt person, so one will do the trick for me. This skirt is new at Zara, and you can see me wearing it here. They also have one that has a slit in the front instead of the back if that is your preference.

To round out the trends I added a denim overshirt, which is a heavier and bulkier cut than a regular denim shirt. This is for the denim-on-denim trend.

You can wear it as a shirt, or as a light jacket, but my favourite way is as a shirt in a denim on denim look.

I just love the look of the oversized overshirt paired with some jeans or a denim skirt, and some feminine shoes to add some contradiction.

Leather is next, but not in the traditional jacket or pant way. We want to integrate some leather into shirts like this sleeveless tank, a t-shirt, or a long sleeve.

When you take all these pieces and put them together you get a very versatile wardrobe that will take you through every one of your style occasions on a sliding scale.

I can do preppy, sexy, feminine, edgy all within the same wardrobe which I attest to understanding my style and how it moves around depending on my mood.

When you shop for style rather than outfits, you will never run out of things to wear. It is like a well-stocked kitchen.

There will always be the right ingredients for any outfit recipe.

  1. Hope Tom’s doing better, and that you and the girls are still in the clear!
Around 2011-ish I was on the hunt for the Kill Bill Onitsukas with no luck, I just could not find that color combination anywhere. I did wind up bying a red pair with yellow stripes. I still have them, I call them my communist sneakers, hahaha.
