I often build capsule wardrobes using warm colour palettes or a combination of warm and cool. Last week’s Spring Capsule Wardrobe on a Budget was more of a warm toned neutral, so I figured this week I would focus on cooler tones because people appreciate when I do.

In one of my classes at school this week, we focused on the colour wheel and using different colour schemes based on the wheel.

If you find yourself in a creative rut, you should get yourself a colour wheel or print one from online because they really help you to use colours together that you would never have thought.

How Does a Colour Wheel Work in Fashion?

I should probably do a separate post on this, so I will give a quick breakdown. Every colour has a complementary colour, and that colour is located directly across from it on a colour wheel.

Using red and green as an example, these are complementary colours, and they are very bold and in your face.

There is a reason that we use it for Christmas.

It is not too often that you see someone wearing red and green together in the Christmas tones.

So instead of red and green, we could try the split complementary colours of red which are yellow-green, and green-blue. Pairing these together is much easier on the eyes than the red and green Christmas combination.

On the opposite side, the split complementary colours of green are orange-red and pink. Think about how nice a watermelon looks. Same idea.

See, nature knows best when it comes to colours.

I’ll save the deeper dive for later, but at the moment find yourself a colour wheel online. I like the one in this post for something basic, quick and easy.

It is Figure 2 about halfway down and has it broken into warm and cool sides.

I like it because it gives the different shades and tones of each colour so you can really see how they work together.

How to use this: When you are picking an outfit, take note of the colours you are choosing. You won’t find black, white, or grey on the wheel because they aren’t colours.

So make sure to pick an actual colour.

Pick one of the colours and look it up on the wheel and choose either a complementary colour (the colour directly across from it) or split complementary colour (the two colours that are to the left and right of the complementary colour) and find something in that to add to your outfit.

It can be anything from an article of clothing to shoes, bags, jewellery, sunglasses, belt, or scarves. These colours will add a bold punch to any outfit.

Choosing something small like accessories is a great place to start with, if wearing bolder colours head to toe scares you.

Today I was wearing a teal, or blue-green blazer chose the split complementary colour of an orange-red bag as a nice contrast. The rest of the outfit was neutral.

Note that accessories don’t need to match.

Mix that shit up, and have some fun with it.

And remember, you can wear knee-high boots both over and under trousers for different looks. It’s all about versatile pieces.
