One of the things 18+ months has taught us…or at least taught me is that you don’t need a huge wardrobe of clothes. I mean, I felt similar before all of this happened but it’s been really reinforced lately.
If you are looking for help building a capsule wardrobe then this post might be for you.
Every time I see someone’s massive walk-in closet bursting with clothes it doesn’t give me envy, it gives me anxiety.
Can you imagine trying to figure out what to wear every day with that much choice?
It would get to the point that you would be wearing something different every single day which totally defeats the purpose of clothes.
They are meant to wear often, not wear once and be done with it. I feel like having so many clothing options takes away the creative aspect of dressing.
Can you still be a creative dresser with a massive wardrobe? Of course, you can, but it’s not necessary so many end up dressing pretty basic.
Expensive basic, but basic nevertheless.
The people that dress creatively with a large wardrobe I find are the people who really have style and have theirs nailed down hard. Like one of my favourite Instagram follows Karla Rockmore.
Her closet is incredible, but yet her style and creativity levels are through the roof. You can tell she really gets fashion and knows who she is.
So why am I rambling on about big wardrobes vs small ones? Because most of us do small wardrobes out of necessity and out of financial restrictions.
Can you dress well on a budget? Absolutely.
Can you dress well with a small wardrobe? Yes.
Can you dress well with a small wardrobe on a budget? No doubt about it.
How to Build a Capsule Wardorbe
The key to building a capsule wardrobe first and foremost is knowing your style.
You don’t even have to place yourself into a particular style category. You just have to know what you like, and what works for you.
When people ask me what my style is I shrug my shoulders and say “it depends on the day.” This doesn’t pigeonhole me into having to buy only things that fall under the “correct” style category.
It is easy enough to figure out by auditing your wardrobe and seeing which pieces make you feel your best when you are wearing them.
Then search online to find what kinds of outfits you are drawn to. After you have a general idea you may find that there is an element that they all have in common.
Like maybe you are pulling idea inspirations and you are seeing you are liking a lot of outfits with striped shirts, or oversized sweaters, trenchcoats, coloured flats, or even bold jewellery.
Figuring out these common elements are what you will use when creating a capsule wardrobe list.
And by list, I mean a general list of pieces that you would like to add to your wardrobe. This isn’t a shopping list that you are expected to go out and fulfil all at once.
It takes time and patience to build a capsule wardrobe filled with a small collection of pieces that not only you love but that work together cohesively.
The second part is to know and acknowledge your budget.
This is going to be completely different for everyone. The good news is though, that having a capsule wardrobe will not only save you time but save you money as well.
Let’s say that you love but can’t afford a brand new sweater by Isabel Marant…maybe you can afford to find one like new from a designer consignment shop (this is what I do).
No shame in the thrifting game either.
There is so much stuff out there looking for a new life in someone’s wardrobe. It just takes some time and patience to find what you are looking for.
There is nothing more satisfying to me than finding a fantastic thrifted piece for a steal.
I check my favourite online secondhand shops daily for new stock. But if you can’t be bothered checking that frequently then the end of the season is always a good time to look because people are purging their closets.
People get rid of really good stuff, and if you are on top of it you may be the lucky person to score one of those pieces.
Whatever your budget is, know that is 100% possible to not only have a capsule wardrobe but to look and feel amazing with it as well.
I have been working with a smallish wardrobe since after I got married.
When I first got married I purged a lot. Then after I had my first child I emotionally purged an immense amount of stuff.
Moral of that experience: Do not emotional purge. You will regret it forever.
Once upon a time, I thought that in order to build a capsule wardrobe you had to be rich. Then I was poor and learned that was not the case.
You can learn that too.
Stay safe.
