Shopping for summer clothes for women is my least favourite thing, since it is my least favourite season. I don’t like the hot weather and I find if I am not careful then it can reflect in my summer wardrobe.

Since summer is the time for fewer clothes, I feel like you have to be more creative with putting together outfits.

In the cooler months, you can add visual interest with different weight and textured fabrics, and through layering. It can make for some interesting colour and pattern combinations once layering becomes involved.

But in summer we don’t have these options.

The weather is hotter and the fabric of the clothes becomes lighter weight and less coverage.

More skin shows, therefore you need to find a way for the outfit to be more interesting or creative.

T-shirts and shorts often become the basic uniform out of comfort and ease, but I want to steer away from too much of that basic look and give you more options to play around with to elevate your summer style.

To take typical summer outfits and give them a little more variation, so you don’t get bored or wardrobe fatigue this season.

This summer capsule wardrobe has some foundational neutrals, but I wanted to inject some bright colour options to make things more fun and visually stimulating.

A huge spring and summer trend this year is a nod to Annie Hall with the wide leg, loose fitting trousers.

They come in tons of colours, prints and fabrics, but I find that as long as you stay with a looser, drapier fabric than any of them will be great for summer.

They are a great option to pair with a fitted tank, or t-shirt.

The oversized and fitted silhouette is one of my favourites, and one that maintains a balance, always looking chic.

I’ll give you an example using the wide-leg, black trousers that I included today. I have these in tan and I love them.

I love them so much that I also got them in black, and they are currently in the mail, on the way to my house.

I opted to go up a size in black because I want them a little looser and slouchier for summer.

Something that hangs a little lower on my waist, but I also have the option of wearing higher, with a belt.

I am 5’3″ and I got the short length which hit perfectly for me.

So an outfit example using the oversized and fitted silhouette would be the base outfit of the black trousers paired with the blue, fitted, sleeveless tank.

Slick back your hair into a low bun, and add the hoops.

This is the base look.

This look is simple and chic when paired with some flat sandals, and a large woven bag.

Swap the flats for sneakers, add the bright orange blazer, grab the strawberry bag and now you have an edgy, streetwear style look that is great for anywhere.

Now swap the orange blazer for the black, put on the Mary Janes, and pair it with the black handbag.

Now you have a very put-together look that can be worn anywhere, but can also become one of your summer work outfits.

In each of these examples, you wouldn’t even need to change your hair or jewellery.

You get three completely different looks by adding something or swapping out another.

This is how you should be thinking when putting together a summer capsule wardrobe…or any seasonal capsule wardrobe.

Think of it as many different ways that you can wear a look just by swapping a few pieces.

It will really show you how versatile your wardrobe can be.

It is the same concept as taking a look from day to night, which is something that you get to be an expert at when packing for a trip.

You don’t have the extra room for a bunch of different clothing options, so you need to get creative with shoes, bags, and accessories to make the most out of what you have.

They will make a big difference in your summer looks.

If you are just investing in one or two pieces this season, then make it a colourful shoe, and a fun handbag.

The strawberry bag is delightful, and if you like that concept, Zara also has a strawberry bag that is actually shaped like a strawberry.

It just might be even more delightful.

Side note: if you are looking for a great basic t-shirt, I have this one, and it is fabulous. It gives me the same vibe as the 90s men’s Hanes tees that we used to wear, but nicer fabric.

It also comes in a crew neck.

I have 24 summer outfits for women below, built from the pieces of this summer capsule wardrobe.
