This week I wanted to show to you that it is possible to build a capsule wardrobe that doesn’t revolve completely around basics. Hence, the Better Than Basic Capsule Wardrobe heading.

How many of you have searched online for capsule wardrobe inspiration only to come across example after example of capsule wardrobes that are built from basics and neutrals?

I love a good basic as much as I love a good neutral, but I could not have a whole wardrobe based on that.

Obviously, unless of course that is your personal style.

Which it will be for many and that is okay.

What works for me won’t work for everyone which is the beauty of personal style. It doesn’t make either wrong.

It is just wrong for the other person.

Does that make sense?

With this capsule wardrobe, I want to show you that you can incorporate trends, and colours, and weird or bold pieces, and they will all still work.

Colour mixing is good. It adds interest, and not everything needs to be colour-coordinated.

Some of the best colour parings are colours that you wouldn’t think would work.

Surprise.

Sometimes the more you think they will clash, the better they actually look together.

I talked a while back about using the colour wheel to help you build a wardrobe. It’s along one, but there is a lot of information in there that is helpful when pairing colours.

In that wardrobe, it was all about the bright colours, and in this one, it is about the deeper, richer tones. Probably because it is winter and I love these colours in winter.

We also chatted in the weekend styling question & answer about winter boots and how to wear them without looking like you stepped out of LL Bean.

My example and solution was to find a pair of boots that match your style.

That way they will integrate into your wardrobe, and you will not look like you came out of LL Bean unless your wardrobe does in fact all come from there.

Winter boots will vary by location because winter is different everywhere.

These pink and clear boots I included would work for here even though we get tons of snow, and it can be pretty bloody cold.

Unless I am walking in a snow storm or through 3 feet of snow then I don’t need my hardcore, high winter boots.

These are waterproof and wool lined which means they would be a boot that I could wear on any old winter day.

The streets and sidewalks get plowed regularly here so all I need are warmth and protection from the slush and salt.

Which those do, and they look fabulous doing it. What a fun pair of boots that would make even a very boring or understated outfit a little more exciting.

Next, the oversized denim top.

Denim on denim you ask? Why yes. The spring/summer 2023 trends tell us that double denim is going to be huge.

But not just any double denim.

The proportions are going to be fun as well. Like a way oversized denim jackets, super wide and slouchy jeans, oversized denim shirts and cropped denim tops.

Think of extreme proportions versus something like the fitted chambray tops that we wore in the past.

It is really okay to have trends in your capsule wardrobes.

It is actually an excellent idea to add a couple of trends in each season, so you don’t get wardrobe fatigue.

It is a good way to freshen things up and update your tried and true pieces that get worn season after season.

Since in the winter we predominantly cover up our outfits with coats, which sucks. I would suggest getting a statement coat that makes you feel good, and smile whenever you put it on.

This is a confidence booster.

Something I want to finish off with today is that it is not necessary to shop for outfits. Once you know your style than any individual pieces that you bring in are going to work with what you already have.

That is one of the benefits of knowing your style adjectives which I will talk about in another post.
