A 90s Kate Moss inspired capsule wardrobe may sound weird and different from my usual capsule wardrobes but a question that I get asked a lot over the years is who my style icon is.
I usually say that I don’t have one because I tend to take inspiration from pieces instead of complete wardrobes or one overall style.
Since I like to change it up it made it hard for me to pick just one person whose style I want to emulate.
But that isn’t really true.
There are two that I considered style icons in my world, and they are the 90s Kate Moss, and Winona Ryder. I’d even go so far as to say that these women carried on an enviable style for me until the mid-aughts.
Which was right around the time that I had my first child and became totally lost in my own style. It was also kind of boring time fashion-wise which made everything uninspiring.
Even the best of them lost some inspiration for me.
So I needed to get reacquainted with the person I was and become my own style icon again, and that took quite a few years to get there. You can read a bit about that journey here.
I searched through photos of 90s Kate Moss to find pictures of some of my favourite outfits that she wore, and I put together this winter capsule wardrobe using the same style but modernized.
It has a similar vibe to the 90s Minimalist Capsule Wardrobe that I put together in a cool palette, and a warm palette version (I also have a 90s Minimalist Capsule Wardrobe Digital Style Guide available in both those palettes as well).
As you can tell the 90s vibe seems to be the one that I am drawn to.
So we have that 90s minimalist supermodel off-duty style with the Kate Moss vibe.
First off, while the majority of this winter capsule wardrobe is neutral we have to include animal print.
Kate Moss and animal print go together like Kate Moss and slip dresses.
I decided that a long statement jacket would be perfect for winter, but if that is too much any layering pieces like a blazer will also do the job.
An animal print bag is also another way to include it in the wardrobe if you want something more subtle.
I personally love the in-your-face animal print that a long coat gives. That just screams Kate Moss.
Take that statement coat and toss it over any outfit no matter how basic, and it will level everything up. It will also make you feel and look more confident.
It just has those kinds of magical abilities.
When I was researching for this post I got inspired and started to search for animal print coats and I came across this 1950s beauty.
After thinking about it for a bit I took the plunge because I knew I wasn’t going to regret it. Ultimately I have wanted a long vintage animal print coat for years and I knew that if I sat on it too long then it would sell.
I have learned not to wait too long to make a decision on Etsy and Poshmark purchases. They tend to sell fast which is an exciting part of the secondhand shopping game.
Coat season is my favourite season and I know that I am going to wear this until it falls apart on me, so invest more into my fall and winter wardrobe than my summer.
It’s the wardrobe that inspires me the most and that I feel the most like myself in.
Kate Moss and slip dress and slip skirts.
Those are the images that are going to keep coming up when you search her. It is just her iconic look that we all remember to this day.
Kate’s looks always leaned a bit rock and roll even when wearing basics. But she also had her head to tonal looks that often gave an Audrey Hepburn feel.
Sneakers, flats, boots (both high and low), and little slip-on heels were her shoes of choice,a great pair of worn in jeans, and a white t-shirt or tank.
Maybe both.
A collection of cashmere knit sweaters in a fitted cut to wear that will look just as good paired with trousers as it will being worn over a slip dress.
Don’t forget the crisp black blazer that she was so fond of in her outwear choices, often paired with slim fit matching trousers and heels.
The overall vibe is 90s minimalist with an edge, and it makes me want to completely pair down my wardrobe and live in only this.

I think, this wardrobe you put together, is one of my all time favourite!
Sadly, i‘m not slim anymore ( i’m now 56 yo- over the years i gained a lot of weight)- and therefore i can’t wear this capsule well, but i remember those 90s very fondly! Greetings from Switzerland!🙋🏻♀️
This is one of my favourites too. The 90s aesthetic is one of my favourites, and not just because I grew up during that time. It’s just still so classic and yet modern and represents me well.
