An Edgy Chic Minimalist Capsule Wardrobe seems like an oxymoron, but it is a niche that exists. Not all minimalist wardrobes are full of just neutrals and basics. You can get that minimalist, clean look but still, have an edge.

I was actually going to do a pink capsule wardrobe this week but for some reason, this one kept sticking in my head.

Then I saw Amy Smilovic, the owner of the company Tibi (she is my style favourite), anyway, I saw her wearing a Prada cardigan that looks like a pretty standard classic basic piece…until you lift your arms.

Where a row of fringe hangs from each arm and across the back.

Such an interesting, and edgy touch that adds so much visually without being too much. It takes you from basic to a whole new level and I love it.

This made me change my mind to an edgy chic minimalist capsule wardrobe.

How do you build an Edgy Minimalist Capsule Wardrobe?

It is all in the details.

It’s not always about the stereotypical black, leather, chunky boots kind of edge. It is more of a feeling/vibe/mood/aesthetic, whichever word you choose.

Use counterpoints to guide you to help build this look.

A counterpoint is to emphasize or clarify by contrast or juxtaposition. For example, pairing a feminine dress with masculine shoes. Wearing sportswear (like leggings) with classic pieces like a button-down.

You can even expand on this by combining more than two, like a suit that gives a masculine vibe, with sneakers that are sportswear, and a low plunge tank which is sexy and feminine.

Or we can get it from one piece. These trousers which I am in love with but are out of my budget have a masculine suit vibe, but the pink stripe through it brings some femininity, and the double stripe down the side is like a touch of sporty.

See what I am getting at?

I know I said that it isn’t always about black, but it is always an excellent choice to have black in your wardrobe because it is one of the chicest colours/shades to wear.

Plus it is so flattering and easy.

Also do monochrome. Head to toe the same colour, or same tones of colour if you have it. This allows you to play with textures.

When you are wearing the same colour head to toe, try adding in some different fabrics and textures to really up the edge and drama.

Next is accessories.

Use accessories to bring something to the table. Try a large, chunky pair of earrings with a monotone outfit. Wear a bright, thick, gold necklace instead of a dainty one.

Pick a thick cuff or large ring. We are looking for dramatic pieces that catch the eye.

Try a removable collar in an edgy colour or fabric (I chose leather) to change up a look, add some variation and visual interest.

Instead of going with a black, grey, white, and brown palette that is the base of most minimalist wardrobes, I chose deep and luxurious colours to pair with the neutrals.

Dark green, and burgundy were the main accents. Burgundy can be controversial, you either love it or hate it.

I love it.

Fashion says yes this season too because there seems to be more of an influx of products in burgundy this season versus recent previous seasons.

I also sprinkled in some navy because it pairs well with all the other colours. It can be a bit less harsh than black sometimes is, and it is a great alternative colour to choose.

Now back to the first statement of, it is all in the details.

I mean this literally.

There is fringe on the cardigan and leather shacket. The white blouse ties in the front instead of buttoning, and the black sweater has ruffle details. The cable-knit sweater gives texture.

There are pinstripes on the blazer and slacks. They are a mismatched pair, but this will make them more interesting when worn together.

We have leggings that are knit (cashmere blend) and navy. The jeans are tacked up on the hem of each leg to give it some interesting detailing.

And finally, the booties are mesh, and the purses are all different colours, styles, and textures.

I want you to start paying attention to the details of clothes when you buy them. See what you are drawn to, or what you may want to try.

You will be surprised how small details like these can totally change the entire vibe of a look.
