We are in the middle of a heat wave, so I figured this would be a great time to start on a fall capsule wardrobe. Summer clothing is now on sale and the fall merchandise is beginning to fill the shelves which is all the sign that I need to get started.

A conversation that I have been seeing a lot this week is about how you can be stylish without spending a fortune.

Some people will tell you to save until you can spend more on a piece, but I personally think that you can spend little and look great.

Some of the most stylish people that I follow on Instagram only wear secondhand and thrifted pieces.

There are two reasons that they are so stylish.

One: There is a huge difference between being stylish and having style.

Huge.

There are a lot of influencers out there that are stylish and sporting the newest trends daily. They look great, but it’s not inspirational.

Inspirational is if you put them a budget, so they’d have to put a lot of thought into what they were buying.

It’s easy to be stylish if you are buying something new every day.

It’s a lot harder when you don’t have the money to constantly update your wardrobe, and you need to find new and inventive ways to wear what you already have.

Two: You can 100% absolutely have style and be stylish on a low budget.

If anything it can give you even better style because you have to be really thoughtful into where your money is going.

You won’t just randomly pick up pieces.

The process will be slower and intentional, so you can really find those pieces that are truly you and represent your style fully.

Thrift.

Secondhand shopping is the way to go first and foremost. The process won’t be instantaneous like a shopping spree will.

It will take longer and be harder, but the outcome will be very satisfying. This is where you will find some original pieces that can truly transform your wardrobe to reflect your style.

If thrifting is hard for you or the thrift stores in your area aren’t very good, then you can still do it with some intentional shopping in stores.

Stick to the retailers that are in your budget.

Going to more expensive places can just make you frustrated or sad.

Shop sales. I hate the Zara sale, but I always try to hit in online to get some stuff for the next season.

I pre-shop and favourite the pieces that I am interested in. That way when the sale starts you have a better chance of getting them since you can grab them and check out faster.

Try everything on. You will know right away if it is something worth spending money on.

Fast fashion is obviously not the best choice for the environment but for many people, this is their only option.

Over the years I have found many pieces from fast fashion retailers that were so good that they became key members of my wardrobe and lasted for years (and are still lasting).

Look through everything carefully because there will always be a few really great pieces every season.

Do about 80-20 breakdown incorporating trends into your wardrobe. Trends obviously being the 20%.

Since trends all start at the top and filter their way down through mass production at a lower price point it is always possible to stay trendy on a budget too.

Not to mention that trends recycle, and are recycling now at an even more rapid rate, so chances are you will find a trend that you are looking for at a thrift store.

Did I mention thrifting? I’d say that about 60% of my wardrobe is thrifted or secondhand. Maybe more.

I have three pairs of pants coming for fall that are all consigned secondhand pieces.

Remember that money does not equal style.

Stay safe.
