Can you build a spring capsule wardrobe on a budget? Yes, yes you can. You can build any capsule wardrobe on a budget with a little creativity and planning.

I’m going to start off by saying that this capsule wardrobe is colourful. People asked for one with a little more colour, so I tried to put a fun colourful vibe together.

It reminds of early 90s bold colours and style, and the United Colours of Benneton.

The first time I built a capsule wardrobe was maybe around 2013 and we were broke.

Really broke.

And honestly, the purging stuff you don’t wear step really hurt because I didn’t know if I would ever be able to afford to replace them if I wanted to.

It was a spring capsule wardrobe if I remember correctly. I had the whole starting fresh/spring cleaning mindset going on at that time.

That entire capsule wardrobe was built from items that I already had, and some thrifted pieces. I’m fairly certain the whole thing cost me less than twenty dollars.

It taught me a lot.

I highly recommend that everyone try a capsule wardrobe at least once.

It saves time and money, and it forces you to get creative therefore helping you to develop and hone your style as you go.

It will make you appreciate what you have and you might be surprised with how many options you have after you look more closely at pieces and accessories that you already own.

Statistics say that most women tend to only wear about 20% of their wardrobe. If this is true, which I believe it is, then you are basically working with a capsule wardrobe now, but it is less intentional and harder to work with when it is surrounded by items that you don’t wear.

This is why we do a closet clearout.

Even if you have no intention of getting rid of the items, if you are not wearing them then get them out of your usable closet space.

The point of a capsule wardrobe is to help lessen the anxiety of getting dressed.

Getting rid of that extra visual clutter it will help with that.

The closet clutter is caused by many things, but more often than not it is because we feel we don’t have anything to wear and we mindlessly buy something that we think will help.

This adds up.

You don’t need a lot of clothes to have a lot to wear.

For example: If I start with some of my basics. Let’s say two pairs of pants and a skirt, and then I add in 4 tops. I instantly have 12 different outfits without anything thought process put into it.

When I start to get creative and add in a cardigan and a blazer, now I have doubled that to 24 outfits.

That still involves no creativity, it is still just basic outfit formulas.

The real fun begins when you start swapping out the shoes, and accessories.

You can change the look of an outfit a lot just by changing your shoes and accessories.

Now the options are endless, and that is only with 9 items of clothing.

Not too shabby.

People will often say that you should buy the best that you can afford, and I agree with that.

But that doesn’t mean that just because you can only afford a $30 faux leather jacket from H&M doesn’t mean that it is garbage and going to fall apart on you.

There is a lot of negativity with fast fashion, but for many, fast fashion is the only way that they can afford to buy clothes that are in style.

I have quite a few fast fashion pieces that I have owned for YEARS and they are still great.

The $30 faux leather jacket from H&M is one that I owned. I wore is constantly.

I bought it in 2011 and wore it until 2016 when I upgraded it. It was still in great condition at that point.

I actually still have it, because I gave it to my daughter. My daughter in fact is in the process of pairing down her own wardrobe.

She said that she has really figured out her style over quarantine (something positive I guess?) and has a lot of clothes that no longer fall in line with the look she is trying to achieve.

She currently has three piles LOVE, MAYBE, and GO pile. Then when stores open back up after the 22nd (fingers crossed) she wants to hit the thrift stores to find items that fit her style.

She is a combination of 90s grunge, Lydia Deetz, and an old lady (cat vests and orthopaedic looking shoes). That shouldn’t be too hard to find in a thrift store 😉

So after she is done purging she will move to step two which is to identify the gaps, and make a list of what she is looking for.

Far too many times we have gone out shopping without having any idea of what we are looking for. It’s always a great idea to make a list, otherwise, you might miss something.

This is especially true in a thrift store where you can search aimlessly, or go in with a set idea in mind. I always have more success when I know what I am looking for, otherwise, it feels overwhelming.

After your list comes your budget which I talked about above. Never feel bad about what you cannot afford.

Some of the most stylish people I know shop exclusively second hand.

While some of the gaudiest people tend to have a lot of money.

Money does not equate style.
