I said back at the beginning of November that I was going to start putting together work capsule wardrobes based on the season. My first was a winter work capsule and today I have a spring work capsule wardrobe.

They actually go very well together like an extension. I brought over several of the pieces that will work through every season to go with this capsule because no one needs to buy a whole new wardrobe for each season.

Like I said in the last capsule post, there are those of us that know how to seamlessly go from their work wardrobe to play wardrobe, and then there are those of us who just don’t and have toruble dressing period.

We all want to be the first person, but most of us fall into the second category. So if you are here looking at this post then you were probably searching How to build work capsules and came across this post.

As for every capsule wardrobe, and packing list post I put together a group of outfits from each list so that you can see the potential of that particular capsule wardrobe.

At the bottom of this post, you will find 36 work outfit ideas that I built from the above pieces. You can definitely make a whole lot more I just can’t put too many on each post without slowing down my loading time due to picture overload.

I hope this helps to give you some work wardrobe inspiration.

How to Build a Winter Work Capsule Wardrobe

Let’s start at the beginning where most of us have neither the budget nor the closet space to have a completely separate work wardrobe. This is why transitional pieces are necessary. It makes switching from work to your weekend wardrobe easy.

I always like to include a variety of price points. I like the concept of buying the best pieces that you can afford for staple pieces. The price of those pieces will be different for everyone.

Depending on where you live, your wardrobe needs will vary by season. Springtime here means we are slowly transitioning from a cold winter.

The weather generally stays cold or cooler through April and will finally start to warm in May. Mornings and evenings will still be cold, and there is always the potential of a spring snowstorm.

If you live in someplace that is much warmer, then your spring work wardrobe will a little bit different. Maybe more dresses, open toe shoes, and flowy or breezy pieces.

Now onto the process.

Always Shop Your Closet First

This is probably the most important step.

We tend to not realize the full potential of our wardrobes until we analyze it piece by piece.

It may be tedious but you should go through your wardrobe with a fine-tooth comb and look for any pieces that will easily transition to workplace attire. Set those pieces aside.

What is your workplace dress code? This will help you to only use things that will be allowed in your workplace.

If you need some inspiration to get you started then search on Pinterest, and start building yourself a work capsule inspiration board. This will come in handy for whenever you feel uninspired.

Once you get an idea of what kind of clothes and outfits you would like to wear to work, you can then check the pieces that you set aside to see if you already own anything that will integrate into your spring work wardrobe.

Choose Your Capsule Wardrobe Colour Palette

I am a fan of colours and patterns, but there is no denying that it is much easier to build the foundation of any capsule using a handful of colours that work well together.

Once you have decided what your colour palette is going to be you can add in more vibrant pieces and patterns to round it out if that is your preference.

It is the foundational pieces that are the key to having a capsule wardrobe that is easy to mix and match.

How Many Pieces Does a Capsule Wardrobe Usually Have?

As many as you want.

There was a thing a few years ago where people were striving for a particular number. It was usually around 36 pieces. I don’t like to box myself in because then you get a=obssesed with the number instead of the actual capsule wardrobe.

It’s an added stress that you don’t need.

The easiest way to slim down the wardrobe is by giving yourself an estimate of how many pieces you think you will need in each category.

Ask yourself if you prefer skirts or pants? If you like to wear skirts more, then does it makes sense to have 6 pairs of pants in your capsule?

By figuring out your style and preferences you can cut out the unnecessary pieces which will help to slim down your wardrobe and give you a lesser number.

You won’t need 5 pairs of something in the same colour. Pick the nicest and most versatile of the group and use those. The idea is to give yourself a less cluttered wardrobe so that it is easier to get dressed each day.

Do You Have Any Wardrobe Holes You can Fill?

Most will answer yes. We all have wardrobe holes because wardrobes are constantly evolving.

This is a step where you can really evaluate what you have and then decide what you need. These needs are the wardrobe holes and they don’t have to be filled all at once. It can be gradual.

If you are on a budget then I suggest the first places you look are thrift stores. You can always find some exceptional treasures if you hunt properly.

Other places like the online second-hand retailers of eBay, Poshmark, and Thredup are all good places to find key workwear items as well.

Once you know what you are looking for it is easy to narrow down your searches to hone in on exactly what you want.

Any capsule wardrobe doesn’t have to be “complete”. It makes sense to be a work in progress. You can slowly add to it as you come across pieces.

Just enjoy the process because it can be a revelation in many different ways.

  1. this is exactly what i needed! i recently dyed my hair and need to update my wardrobe and makeup to complement it (went from a dishwater coloured natural brownish/blonde-ish to a red head!). that green blouse has my name all over it! and I’m with you, there’s no need to go crazy every season and replace everything “just because”, but the struggle is real trying to find pieces in the right fabrics/price point/style that’ll work seamlessly no matter what. thank you for making it that much easier 🙂

    • I’m so glad the timing was perfect! That green is one of my favourite colours and I don’t really have a lot in it for some reason. It looks amazing with all shades of brown which is also one of my all time favourite colour combinations. It’s going to look amazing with red hair. Since my blonde leans more towards golden it works for me too, but with red it would be perfect. Have fun updating your wardrobe to accommodate your new look!
