This spring capsule wardrobe embraces the colour pink, so if pink isn’t for you then this won’t be an ultimate spring capsule wardrobe.

Just substitute the pink for a colour you like and build your capsule around that.

Today the weather was cold, but the sun was brightly shining. and there was an actual warmth to the wind which reminded me of when spring is starting to come.

I won’t delude myself to thinking that is the case here, because the coldest days of winter are yet to come.

It did inspire me for spring though.

The girls and I got out for a nice airing vitamin D, and some exercise.

I mailed some packages and a few things that I sold on Poshmark and picked up dinner.

All in all, we were out for about three hours and the weather was uplifting..

It made me excited to see the flowers start to pop up and bloom which is why I chose pink as today’s spring capsule wardrobe theme.

How do you start a capsule wardrobe for beginners?

This is actually a question that I get regularly. I am by no means an expert on capsule wardrobes but I have been working on it for about 7 years now.

One of these days I may actually do some kind of wardrobe photo guide or video.

Maybe when we move to another place that is more open, less cluttered, and video-friendly than what I am currently working with.

But until then you get my visual guides and some blog posts.

I am going to break it down into a few simple steps to show you how easy it can be.

First and foremost: Start small. Do not attempt to capsule your entire wardrobe for a whole year.

Work season by season.

A capsule wardrobe is an easy way to save money, time and the environment.

  • Do you have a closet full of clothes but end up wearing the same outfits every day?
  • Does shopping scare you?
  • Do you always claim that you have nothing to wear?
  • Are you known to buy things just because they are on sale, not because they look great on you and make you feel good when you wear them?
  • Do you keep spending money on clothes only to never wear them because you don’t have anything for them to go with?

If you answered yes to any of these you probably could benefit from a capsule wardrobe so let’s get to it.

Technically there are no rules when building a capsule wardrobe. You do you and see what works best.

But if you are a numbers kind of person the standard is usually 9 tops, 5 bottoms, and 5 pairs of shoes each season.

That doesn’t mean that every season you go out and get 9 new tops, 5 bottoms, and shoes.

You carry everything over than can be used the next season, add it to your wardrobe base (your year-long group of items that are your hardest working pieces and the base for your entire wardrobe which I will talk about below.).

Then sprinkle in a trend or two to keep it fresh. The spring trends I included in this capsule wardrobe are the zebra print, quilted jacket, and a sweater vest.

The Step by Step Capsule wadrobe

1. Reduce the size of your current wardrobe. This is the hardest step because it involves getting rid of a lot of things which can be hard.

Spend a few hours just cleaning out what you know that you will never wear.

Set them aside to sell or donate.

Anything you are uncertain about can be set aside as well, and you can go back to them later. If you purge too hardcore you may regret it so don’t make any harsh decisions.

2. Build your base. The base is a collection of items that build the foundation of your wardrobe. These are your workhorse pieces and will include items from every season, and/or you will be able to carry these through to every season.

The base is not your capsule wardrobe. It is the pieces that you will mix with your seasonal capsules to make your daily outfits.

For me, the base includes my favourite jeans, t-shirts, seasonal outerwear, my go-to shoes.

Your base will also include your sleepwear, loungewear (which is more important than ever now), formal pieces, and accessories.

3. Building the capsule. This is where you have to take into consideration your lifestyle because everyone’s capsule wardrobe needs will be different.

Jot down the types of situations in your daily/weekly life that you will need different outfits for.

What types of outfits make you feel your best. Collect some ideas so you can start pulling pieces together that will help you build those outfits.

I always choose a blazer for every single season, because to me it is the easiest way of making an outfit look put together.

Select your base colour which should be neutral. For me, that is often black or grey. I do love browns though.

Start adding pieces that will coordinate with one another.

I often choose another colour that isn’t neutral and build around that.

Today the colour was pink.

Include some pattered pieces that will also match to add some visual variety so you don’t get bored.

Choose the shoes and accessories that will work the best for the season and the lifestyle you have.

For spring that will probably include a great pair of sneakers, some flats, and maybe some mules depending on the temperatures.

Here spring doesn’t get warm until towards the end so shoes that cover the foot or that I can wear socks with are a better choice for me.

As you go along and select items you should try to build outfits. This can involve trying everything on or just laying things out to get an idea.

If an item cannot be made into at least 3 different outfits then do not include it.

The point of a capsule wardrobe is to have a very versatile collect of pieces to make the most of a small wardrobe.

Once you have everything figured out you can go back to that uncertain pile at the purging stage and see if anything will integrate well into your new paired down wardrobe.

You never know how many great pieces you will breathe new life into after you have been inspired to get creative.

Start slowly. Don’t push yourself. It’s a process not a contest.

That’s it!
