It’s hard to get into a spring capsule wardrobe mindset when it is cold outside, and it’s been pretty cold this past week. But I like to start thinking about it before winter is over for a couple of reasons:

  1. Stores begin to sell merchandise a season early, and it is nice to get a jump on things.
  2. It is something to look forward to during the darkest and most depressing months of the year. And boy, it’s pretty depressing this year.

I am really looking forward to being able to have bare ankles again. I actually just got those blue flats that I included in this capsule wardrobe post and I can’t wait until I can wear them.

They are the Everlane Day Glove in a new blue colour, and since I love and wore my red Day Gloves to death I figured that these would get a lot of use as well.

And the colour is gorgeous.

I tend to transfer a lot of my wardrobe through to each season all year long so you are going to see many of the pieces in My Winter Capsule Wardrobe Essentials post pushed forward into spring.

I think wardrobe staples are something that doesn’t have a set rule as to what to include because a lot will depend on your lifestyle, style, and where you live.

Where I live, spring includes cold weather and spring snowstorms (especially in the early part), but in other places, you might need shorts and sandals.

My ideas are just general suggestions. It’s up to you to tweak it so it works for you.

What are some Spring Capsule Wardrobe Staples?

I like to include some trends in seasonal staples because they are some of the fun pieces you will add to your wardrobe to keep it feeling fresh.

It also helps to break up the monotony of wearing the same things over and over.

A vest – It can be a sleeveless knit vest or just a regular button-up vest. Something that can be worn alone or layered over things.

Most stores are offering some version of these at varying price points. I never like to spend a lot of money on something if it is a trendy piece.

T-shirts – This is an obvious choice because you will wear the shit out of them in all seasons. They make a great layering piece, but they are also an essential warm-weather item.

It’s well worth the money to get a great quality t-shirt because you will get tons of wear from it.

A button-down – I love an oversized button-down and they carry well through every single season.

Traditional cotton is always a good choice because it is a natural fibre and breaths, but I also like to have a linen button-down as the temperatures begin to rise.

Jeans – Your favourite pair of jeans. As Gen Z liked to point out this week, skinny jeans are out and anyone wearing them is old.

I am a huge proponent of wearing what you want so I wouldn’t be too concerned about what Gen Z thinks (I’m the mom to one).

…Remember that they ate Tide Pods.

On that note, I actually like a straight leg jean with a short enough inseam that they skim my ankles.

This style to me always looks really great with a pair of flats.

I also want to try out a flared jean if I can find a pair that I love. I do have my Citizens of Humanity Wide Leg Crop that gets a lot of use in the warmer months, and they released a pair that are a similar cut this season as well.

A wide leg and/or cropped trouser – Trousers are a great way to add some dressiness to your wardrobe. A pair that you can wear with both heels, or cuffed with sneakers, flats, or sandals will become a wardrobe go-to for their versatility.

A dressy shirt – A blouse that will easily take you from day to night with minimal effort.

A variety of footwear – In spring you can easily get away with a pair of flats, sneakers, sandals, and either mules, boots, heels, or another pair of flats to break up the monotony.

A skirt or dress – or both depending if you are a skirt or dress person. I much prefer dresses but find skirts way more versatile. I think in this instance I would choose a slip dress, or looser fitting shirt dress with a longer sleeve length.

Blazer – A blazer is one item that I wear in every single season. I love them, and the ease in which they can immediately dress up an outfit.

Having a couple of blazers in different colours and fabric really flesh out your capsule wardrobe.

This past year has been uber causal so even when I am wearing jogging pants, I feel instantly more put together if I throw a blazer over it.

That’s it.

Those are the items that I consider spring capsule wardrobe staples. They are something that I include each year in mine, and I can’t wait until spring.

Stay safe.

  1. Laugh at me if you like, but I literally gasped when I saw you’d posted this. Your capsule wardrobes mean that much to me. 😉 The spring ones are also keeping me from buying anything more for winter. In Seattle we get minimal snow though we are supposedly getting some later today. Thank you as always!

    • Haha! I’m glad that you enjoy them, it keeps me motivated to make more 🙂 I feel like we have finally just hit winter. It was really mild for this time of year and no snow stuck. It’s more than making up for it this week though. I really have no need for anymore winter things so it’s making me think of spring. I hope you are doing well!

  2. one of my friends and i were just talking about the “death” of skinny jeans yesterday. honestly, i feel like i only look good in either skinny jeans or like a 70s high rise flare-which i’m in the market to find. i’m 36, so i’ll just continue to be old and rock my skinnies!

we are just now getting into our “winter” type weather down here. it’s more or less hovering at super cold with rain that’s not quite at freezing rain temps. my husband is more than ready for the warmer weather; i’m actually loving the cold/dark days to just chill out and read.

i also wanted to say thank you for introducing me to niki whittle’s blog & instagram. i’ve been going through her blog and instagram posts and they are so helpful-as is your interview with her!

    • I find the whole Gen Z thing funny when in reality they are just wearing what I wore when I was 15…only more expensive 😂 and a 70s high rise flare is exactly what I want too. I just haven’t found them yet.

We’ve had a pretty easy winter so far with temps just about freezing. Shit hit the fan this past week but it’s February and we usually have mounds of snow by now so I can’t complain. I prefer winter to summer hands down anyway so I appreciate the colder darker days too, I just wish I could go to a store besides Walmart 😂

    • And Niki is fantastic. She totally knows her stuff, and is so nice and helpful. She’s one of the best people I’ve met on Instagram.
