Having a transitional wardrobe is one of those things that I consider a must with my wardrobe. It important because of how unpredictable the weather can be here.
This is why it is important for a seasonal capsule wardrobe to be built with pieces that you will utilize and move forward to the next season.
And that is not even taking into consideration how ridiculously expensive and wasteful it is to buy a completely new wardrobe each season.
But that is a whole other tangent that I could go on but I won’t.
I had to break out the winter boots today, not because it was snowing but because we had a really good windchill going on and sneakers weren’t cutting it.
I can always tell a really cold day when I look down at the ground and can see the light dusting of snow kind of blowing and swirling in a mist across the pavement (it’s always easier to see on streets or parking lots).
Another positive mark for the face mask?
It kept my face warm today without having to wear a scarf wrapped around it.
I also couldn’t find my gloves and had to wear my kid’s. I am apparently not prepared with the winter accessories, but I have my winter wardrobe nailed down tight.
Winter is probably my favourite season to dress because I love sweaters, layers, and jackets.
I am very sad when they have to go to the back of the closet for a season.
Thankfully our seasons are about 4 months hot, and 8 months unpredictable.
And by unpredictable I mean, in spring it might be 30°C in the afternoon, and snow flurries by sundown.
This is why a transitional wardrobe is so important.
How does a transitional capsule wardrobe work?
A transitional capsule wardrobe allows you to make the most out of your clothes by bringing forward as many items as you can each season to the next.
For example: In the above example of a capsule wardrobe I could use all of those shirts for at least 3 seasons.
For summer I wouldn’t need a turtleneck but the rest would probably be utilized at some point.
The shoes would also all work for three seasons, but in summer you would use only the sneakers and maybe a pair of boots for work or something dressier.
Bottoms are a bit harder. I wear jeans 365 days a year, as well as trousers (depending on the fabric), but my faux leather pants and leggings have a much shorter shelf life.
Does this mean that I don’t buy them?
No, because I actually really love wearing them and look forward to faux leather pant season every year.
I usually include a trouser style leather pant, but in this instance, I chose to go for the faux leather leggings.
This year has leaned so far to the casual side of dressing that I think a great pair of faux leather leggings would be a good investment.
This pair if from Spanx because they are generally listed as the holy grail of leather pants (that don’t cost $500).
I don’t own a pair of them but I have tried them on and they do live up to the hype for me.
They are MUCH more comfortable that the pair I have from H&M.
They are easy to wear, suck everything in, lift your ass, and they are leggings that do not give you camel toe…this is probably the most important selling featuring and should actually be listed on their site.
One of my favourite ways to wear leggings in winter is paired with sneakers, a white button-up or oversized sweatshirt/sweater, and a long coat.
So if you are wanting to embrace the relaxed loungewear looks of 2020, but don’t want to take it to the joggers level yet, this might be a good place to start.
Building a truly intentional transitional wardrobe forces you to think harder about each piece that you want to buy to determine if it will get maximum wearability throughout the year.
Maximum wearability gives you more outfits, more money saved, and more time to think about other things than what you are going to wear.
I can’t believe this year is almost over.
Stay safe.
