SHOP THE POST

Winter is my thing. I love it maybe even better than fall because there is something so peaceful about cold weather and snowfall. So if you are looking on how to build a winter capsule wardrobe this post may be for you.

I’m not going to lie. I really didn’t think this post was getting out tonight. I pretty much spent the last 24 hours glued to social media and constantly refreshing news sites.

What a shit show.

There were moments when I thought my faith in humanity was restored but that quickly changed. I am sorry. It’s brutal to watch from up here. I can only imagine what it is like to live it.

To keep me away from the obsessive refresh I decided that I would in fact put this out.

I have a feeling that this winter is going to be LOOOONG, both literally and figuratively so here it goes.

What is a Capsule Wardrobe

It actually has a relatively old history compared to how many years it has been popular.

The concept of a capsule wardrobe was created in the 1970s by a London boutique owner Susie Faux (the boutique was actually called Wardrobe).

She described it as a collection of a few essential items of clothing that do not go out of fashion, which you expand with seasonal items.

While now it has altered slightly to a refer to a collection of interchangeable items only to get the most outfits potential out of it.

The aim stays the same:
To have an outfit suitable for any occasion without having an excessive number of clothes.

I don’t know about you but I find the amount of excess clothing that I see online that people own very overwhelming.

There was a time where I thought that more meant better, but in hindsight, I really wore the same pieces over and over again.

I had my collection of tried and true pieces and outfits and that is what I stuck with.

When I paired down it not only made getting dressed much easier, it also made it less stressful.

Why would you want getting dressed to be stressful?

What Should be Included in a Winter Capsule Wardrobe?

I think a collection of sweaters is a good place to start regardless of where you live.

  • Add in some bottoms in winter fabric like wool trousers (I am on a trouser kick).
  • Several tops of different styles and colours. Blouses, short sleeves, long sleeves, bodysuit (good for layering since they don’t need to be tucked).
  • A versatile dress. I am a fan of a sweater dress in the winter since they also layer over pants nicely too. Cold legs suck.
  • Winter gear including a warm jacket, weather boots, and winter accessories.
  • Footwear that will work in winter. Boots (short, high or both), and sneakers are good options. Flats don’t tend to work unless you live in a no snow area.

Capsule Wardrobe Colour Palette

We all have our favourite colour combinations and are at least somewhat familiar with what colours look good on us.

I am a big fan of camel and dark green. That green of the wrap sweater is one of my favourite greens besides 1970s green.

I actually have that sweater in black and in grey, and I wore them a lot last winter/spring. I was excited to see it brought back in other colours this season.

I also really like grey and am partial to a well-fitting pair of grey trousers.

They are so versatile, and since grey is a neutral they will go with anything, and because they have a wide leg they are easy to wear a base layer under if you live in an area that gets very frigid temperatures.

I love the Uniqlo’s HeatTech series for base layers.

Capsule Wardrobe Rules:

Make your own rules.

You don’t need a magic capsule number.

You don’t need a specific colour palette.

You don’t need to have a large budget.

Make Purposeful choices. If you can, buy the best you can afford within your budget and you will have pieces that last years.

Combine seasons where applicable.

Stick to classics, but sprinkle in trends. Pick on or two trends to follow. No one needs to jump on every trend bandwagon. It is a waste of money.

Most of all just have fun with it. Fashion is supposed to be fun.
