The Realistic 2020 Winter Capsule Wardrobe

When I say realistic 2020 winter capsule wardrobe, I know that is not going to be applicable to the life of every single person. That’s an impossible endeavour.

I use realistic loosely, as it applies to the lives of people who work from home, stay at home moms, people that are in perpetual lockdown or tight restrictions, and people who just sick and tired of wearing loungewear for the last 9 months.

It’s still not quite winter yet, although the weather has felt like it for the last couple of weeks.

And it should be 2020/2021 winter capsule wardrobe, but 2020 pretty much stands alone. Hopefully.

Less sunlight makes days feel immeasurably shorter, stir craziness, boredom, frustration, stress, fear, and these emotions on rotation within a 24 hour period make us feel like we are stuck in the movie Groundhog Day.

There are small things that I do to try to bring a sense of normalcy to my day, and getting dressed out of pyjamas is one of them.

I am trying to get into the daily exercise regime, as well as eating healthier but I am really struggling in those two areas.

So for the moment, I try to just get dressed and get out and have a short brisk walk each day for some sun (when it’s actually sunny) and for a change of scenery.

How has my 2020 style Evolved?

While the base of my style is the same I have noticed that this year I am wearing a lot of wide-leg, loose-fitting trousers vs jeans.

I bought these, and get a ton of use out of them. I also love these.

Don’t get me wrong, jeans are still the basis of my wardrobe, but when I am looking for straight-up comfort without resorting to pyjamas I choose the trousers.

In reality, a great fitting pair of jeans is not supposed to be comfortable. They usually are 100% cotton with zero stretch, and while they look good they are not conducive to hanging around in for extended periods of time.

On the other hand we have got used to jeans with at least a 1% elastane that has made jeans into the comfortable staple that we know and love.

You can find great fitting, quality jeans with some stretch, so if jeans are your wardrobe staple and you want to lounge in them at home, then look for the elastane content.

1% is good. Too much and they will stretch out of shape and get saggy easily.

What are my stay at home wardrobe formulas?

I tend to lean towards cold, and it doesn’t help that my youngest runs hot and is always cracking open windows.

Because of this I have learned to layer.

Right now, I wear my turtleneck bodysuit a lot. It works under pretty much any sweater, button-down, or dress.

Years ago I felt like wearing button-downs was for the office.

Fast forward and they are a wardrobe staple of mine.

Depending on the look I am going for I will either wear one that fits perfectly, or I will go oversized.

Oversized is comfortable, cool, and chic all in one. A quick cuff of the sleeves and you have a perfect slouchy menswear inspired look when paired with some easy to wear trousers.

When I go oversized I either go up in size in a women’s style, or I go straight to the menswear because honestly, men always get the good basics.

I’m wearing this combo today if you are interested in what it looks like for reference.

If I was participating in a Zoom then I would probably just throw on a thick chain necklace and some lipstick (I wear the 220 Athens Anemone. Its a bright orangey-red). Maybe pull my hair back depending on if I was having a bad hair day…which I am today.

Another formula is a turtleneck sweater or an oversized cardigan paired with faux leather trousers.

Leather pants don’t sound comfortable, but if you get the slouchy trouser or jogger style (even the wide leg style) they really are.

Faux leather leggings, on the other hand, can be tight and uncomfortable. Thankfully they have released so many different styles this past year that you will ultimately find one that works for you.

It’s a fun way to add some edge.

And some days edge is the only thing that I have going for me.

So overall my wardrobe has not had a huge change this past year because I have always been very causal.

If you don’t mind this kind of style you can follow me on Instagram, where I post similar looks 4-5 times a week. These are actually real-life outfits vs, posing in the streets and go home and change outfits.

I don’t have the time nor the money for that shit 😉

Stay safe.
