Last week I had the ultimate winter capsule wardrobe. Which is just a fancy way of saying winter capsule wardrobe that the search engines like 😉 This week I have how to build a winter capsule wardrobe that will follow the same concept as last.

Usually, by this time of year, we have had at least one light dusting of snow and some windchills.

This week though we decided to have a heatwave. It was so weird to have summer weather when you should be wearing a winter coat.

It hasn’t been this warm since 1937 which is concerning. It also makes me not want to think of winter fashion but it is supposed to cool down again by tonight and all will be well again.

When I am figuring out my wardrobe each season I usually do a closet cleanout and reorganization.

I did the cleanout today and have some things that will be listed on Poshmark as well as items donated.

I am now trying to figure out a new way of keeping my sweaters organized because right now it isn’t working.

It was fine when it wasn’t knit weather, but now that we are (or will be again) I find the area they are stored in very disorganized and cluttered.

That is one of my goals this week.

Even though I have a tiny closet that stores all the seasons’ clothes in it at once, I still like to have it well thought out and organized in manner that I can easily see where my winter pieces are.

What should you include in a winter capsule wardrobe?

That is going to differ between climates. I know someone that moved here from Texas and brought her “winter coats”. She was in for a big surprise.

Needless to say, those became early fall coats, and even then was pushing it until she acclimatized. I’m not even sure if she has fully yet.

I love coats. I love cute fall coats much more than winter coats though, because winter coats are usually bulky, and kind of plain.

This is why I like to have a dressier winter option. My daily go-to winter coat is this long puffer.

It keeps me warm, is lightweight so you don’t feel like you have a weighted blanket on your back. It does the job well.

When I need a change or something dressier I have a wool one that I wear. I am actually looking for an oversized wool jacket that I can layer under to keep warmer.

When I was in Simons yesterday I found my dream coat…but it cost $1700 so it will continue to be a dream.

It is velvet and my favourite green. The photos don’t do it justice. The green is much brighter in person. $1700 makes me want to cry.

So with that ramble what I am trying to say is that it is good to have a couple of different jackets because you will be covered up a lot in the winter and it can get pretty boring looking pretty fast. It is nice to have some options.

Snow boots.

I went years and years without a proper pair of snow boots and I survived…BUT now that I have a few pairs it is a lot more pleasant when I am walking outside.

My favourite winter boots at the moment are Sorels. I have a few pair in different styles. The Joan of Arctic are my most hardcore, but my daily use boots are these, and these.

I have been lucky enough to find mine at Value Village over the last few years. I apparently got lucky via someone else’s winter closet cleanout.

Look second hand because people get rid of great stuff.

How many pieces should a capusule wardrobe have?

However many you want.

Is there a magic number for how many pieces you should have in a capsule wardrobe?

No, never.

You could have 115 pieces and if that is down from the number you had last year then you are headed in the right direction.

The goal is to make your wardrobe smaller but more usable.

The goal isn’t to check a bunch of boxes of rules people made.

There is no such things as one wardrobe fits all.

  • A few things worth pointing out. The black jeans are Levi’s. You can see me wearing them here in the 28″ length. I prefer the 26″ though, and Levi’s is currently having a 30% off of $100 in the US and 40% off in Canada (until tonight).
  • The coat is from Banana Republic and is currently 50% off with the code BRFAMILY until tonight.
  • The brown cardigan is from Everlane and you can see me wearing it in the grey right here. I REALLY like the brown though.
  • The blue blouse is from Gap, and they are currently running a 40% off sale plus an additional 20% off. Use codes FRIENDS for the 40%, and FAMILY for the additional 20% off
  • The sweater dress is from J.Crew and Rewards Members get 45% off their purchase with code FAMILY. Everyone else gets 35% off with code FRIENDS
  • If you want to see the blue jeans on, you can see them here. I have them in the same wash.
