What goes around comes around and when it comes to fashion it seems to be coming around faster every season. It seems like we just stored away our skinny jeans and here they are coming back.
I feel like this iteration of indie sleaze will have more variation than before, and that it will favour other fits of jeans aside from skinnies since our eyes have been opened to the world of relaxed denim.
Trend forecasting says that Y2K is on the decline and I think that Indie Sleaze is at the forefront of what will take its place.
It’s been talked about since around early 2022 and it is starting to feel like it is shifting in that direction with what I am starting to see both worn and in stores.
It doesn’t surprise me that Y2K is going out because it is very niche and not everyone’s tastes. I always found that fashion era to be a bit scattered and lost.
It’s not like the more classic styles like 90s minimalism that looks modern whenever you wear it.
So Indie Sleaze, or indie and hipster grunge as we who wore it the first time around called it, has a lot more appeal and flexibility than some of these niche trends that are coming and going and yet will combine really well with all of them if you love a good juxtaposition in your style.
It was the last fashion era that before social media and cell phones were the central focus so it was more about dressing for ourselves versus dressing for the camera which was so authentic.
Nowadays, so many influencer outfits we see are strictly for the camera, and are bought with the sole purpose of being photographed and returned.
Some of our favourite Indie Sleaze It girls were Chloe Sevigny, Alexa Chung, Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, Irina Lazareanu, Sky Ferreira, and The Olsen Twins (pre The Row) to name a few if you want to go on a little trip down fashion memory lane.
It feels so far, yet so recent, and many of us still have key pieces in our wardrobes. So pull them out and enjoy the ride. Again.
The Roots of Indie Sleaze
In the realm of fashion, trends come and go, but some leave a lasting impression. One such trend is Indie Sleaze, a style movement that emerged in the mid to late 2000s and continued to make waves into the early 2010s.
It’s not just a fashion trend; it’s a cultural phenomenon that encapsulates a generation’s attitude and lifestyle, particularly resonating with women who sought to express their individuality and non-conformity through their attire.
Indie Sleaze was born in the underground music scenes, thriving in the smoky ambience of indie rock concerts and the worn-down charm of dive bars.
The late 2000s were a time of musical exploration and rebellion, and fashion was the medium through which many expressed this spirit.
The style was a blend of grunge, vintage chic, and a dash of rock ‘n’ roll rebellion. It was edgy, carefree, and unapologetically raw.
The Indie Sleaze aesthetic was a stark contrast to the polished and curated looks that dominated mainstream fashion.
It was more about an attitude than a set style: a mix of dishevelled elegance and deliberate nonchalance and the look will vary between the wearer.

Key Elements of Indie Sleaze Fashion for Women
I want to premise this by saying that when styles come back they are never the same as they were the first time.
There are always small differences, and nuances in style, fit, and design.
They modern it up and because of this we don’t need to jump straight into skinny jeans again. We can adopt the pieces we like and pair them with what we are comfortable with.
I’m not certain that I can go back to skinny jeans. A straight leg feels like my limit at the moment. Never say never, but currently, I am in the nope department.
There are some key elements that I think are going to be huge and we will start with a leopard print explosion.
Leopard print is a neutral so traditionally it is in season after season, but I feel that there is going to be a really big lean into it again which I love.
I just bought another animal print vintage jacket. This one is more of a swing style versus the sleek fit of my other one.
Here are a few that I came across in my search. This one is from around the 1950s, a 1980s long style, a 1970s trapeze cut, another long one from the 80s or early 90s, one from the 90s, a similar style and print to mine, and a stunning pricier one from the late 40s/50s.
Next are stripes and the whole sailor/nautical element. So versatile, and yes so classic. The sailor element I feel will be less flashy/campy and more neutral/darker.
And the last one I want to draw your attention to is polka dots. I think you are going to start seeing a strong resurgence of this past favourite.
So if you take anything from this, remember those three things because they will do a lot to enhance your current wardrobe.
Now on to the key elements of Indie Sleaze.
Building an Indie Sleaze Wardrobe for Women
Creating an Indie Sleaze wardrobe involves more than just shopping for specific items; it’s about cultivating a certain aesthetic and attitude.
Start with the Basics
Invest in a few key pieces: a pair of well-fitting jeans, a leather jacket, and a couple of vintage band tees or sweatshirts. These items will form the foundation of your Indie Sleaze wardrobe.
Vintage and Thrifted Clothing
Indie Sleaze is synonymous with vintage finds. Thrift stores and vintage shops were (and still are) the holy grails for Indie Sleaze enthusiasts.
One of the joys of Indie Sleaze fashion is the thrill of the hunt. Spend time browsing through thrift stores and vintage shops.
Last week I posted a wardrobe that consisted entirely of secondhand and vintage finds.
Look for unique pieces that speak to you, whether it’s a retro dress, a quirky blazer, or an old band tee.
We embraced retro dresses, old-school band tees, and unique accessories that couldn’t be found in regular retail stores. It was about creating a look that was as unique as the individual wearing it.
Skinny Jeans and Leggings
Tight-fitting skinny jeans or leggings were a staple for Indie Sleaze. Women often paired them with oversized tops or band tees, creating a silhouette that was both casual and chic.
Black was a popular colour, but experimenting with different hues and patterns was not uncommon.
Again, we don’t have to go this route. We can embrace the straight leg, cigarette pant, cropped, wide leg, whichever style you like and then combine other elements.
Leather Jackets and Blazers
Leather jackets added an element of toughness to the Indie Sleaze look. A well-worn jacket, perhaps with a few studs or patches, was a prized possession.
Blazers, often oversized, were also a popular choice, offering a slightly more structured alternative to the leather jacket.
This is good because blazers have been everywhere for years, and we all have at least one kicking around which makes it easier.
Layering and Mixing Textures
Layering was a significant aspect of Indie Sleaze fashion, so learn the art of layering.
Women would mix textures and patterns in unexpected ways, like pairing a delicate lace top with a rugged denim jacket.
I incorporated semi sheer tops (an indie staple) with velvet, leather, and faux fur.
Don’t be afraid to pair unexpected items together; this is where your personal style will really shine.
This approach to layering gave the Indie Sleaze style its distinctive, eclectic look.
Footwear: Boots and Ballet Flats
Footwear choices in Indie Sleaze fashion ranged from grungy boots to delicate ballet flats. The key was to find a balance between comfort and style, often leaning towards a more vintage or worn-in look.
Accessories: The Devil is in the Details
Accessories are essential in pulling together an Indie Sleaze look. Look for unique pieces at thrift stores, flea markets, or even in your own closet.
Think vintage scarves, eclectic jewellery, and funky sunglasses. Accessories were crucial in Indie Sleaze fashion.
Scarves, hats, oversized sunglasses, and eclectic jewellery all played a part in creating a unique look.
Many women in the Indie Sleaze scene also embraced DIY accessories, adding a personal touch to their outfits.
Hair and Makeup
The Indie Sleaze look extends to hair and makeup. Messy hairdos, smudged eyeliner, and a generally undone look complement the fashion style. It’s about looking effortlessly cool.
Evolve Your Style
Finally, allow your style to evolve. Indie Sleaze is not about rigid rules.
It is is more than just a fashion trend; it’s a statement of individuality and non-conformity.
By building a wardrobe that resonates with the Indie Sleaze spirit, you’re not just dressing up; you’re embracing a lifestyle.
Remember, the essence of Indie Sleaze is to be authentically you, so feel free to experiment and tweak the style to suit your personal taste. Happy styling!
