SHOP THE POST

Last week I posted a minimalist capsule wardrobe starter kit, and in the post, I talked about how to find your style and how important it was in building a capsule wardrobe (and non capsule wardrobes).

Without having your style nailed down for lack of a better word, your wardrobe begins to lack cohesiveness and gradually fills with pieces that don’t work for you or your lifestyle.

This leads to impulse shopping, which leads to more stuff in your closet that you don’t want or need. And the cycle just keeps going until you recognize why and break it.

Head over to the post if you are interested in reading about finding your style.

Or if you already know it and it leans towards edgy then this how to build an edgy capsule wardrobe post might be for you.

I am always looking for inspiration so I get excited when you guys email me asking for ideas or giving requests.

I don’t get to complete all of them because I am only a one-person blog, plus I homeschool my kids (way before it was mandatory) and the hours in the day are quite limited.

I try though, and today’s post is one of those. I was asked if I could do an Anine Bing inspired capsule wardrobe.

A similar vibe with a smaller price point.

At first, I was like, “this is going to be a fun wardrobe challenge!” and then I realized that my personal style has a lot of Anine Bing vibe to it which made it quite “easy”.

And by easy I mean it is easier for me to pick wardrobe pieces that hit my personal tastes than it is to pick for someone else’s tastes.

Anine Bing can be quite pricey so I tried to include selections from less expensive retailers or stores that offer regular 30-40% off sales.

Anine Bing’s signature style revolves around a few key pieces.

  • A great pair of jeans.
  • Some perfectly worn-in t-shirts (or at least looks worn-in).
  • A Blazer.
  • A slightly oversized white blouse.
  • Pointed Black leather booties both low heeled and flat.
  • heels
  • statement jewellery that includes animals.
  • A graphic sweatshirt.
  • A satin midi skirt.

She knows what she likes, and what works for her, therefore always looks put together because she is someone who is both comfortable and confident with her style.

Here are 5 simple steps that can help you to build a capsule wardrobe in your own style and maintain it.

Find your Style

Once again I am back to this, but seriously guys, it’s key.

Without it, your wardrobe will be a lost cause. Wasted money, wasted space, wasted time.

You’ll look like you are pretending rather than owning your style. When you own your style it shows in your confidence.

Purge Your Closet

Do this regularly.

It can be seasonally, yearly, hell it can even be monthly.

Purging your closet keeps all your favourite, feel-good pieces in the forefront.

When your closet is filled with nothing but pieces that you love you will never have nothing to wear.

This will also help you to find your foundational pieces, which is the next step.

Determining your Key Wardrobe Staples

Those species that you keep returning to year after year that you plan to keep forever.

These are the pieces that you build your entire wardrobe around.

It’s kind of like your uniform, but since I hate that phrase I will say that when you wear them they make you feel like the best version of yourself.

We all want that.

Keep it Simple

From your hair to your feet.

Who wants to spend hours getting ready?

Spackling 3 inches of makeup may make your photos look good, but in person, it’s just too much.

Or like Cher from Clueless said….a full-on Monet.

This applies to what you are wearing as well.

When you put too much thought into what you are wearing it usually leans towards too much and the clothes wear you instead of you wearing the clothes.

“Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take at least one thing off.” – Coco Chanel

Let Go of the Trends

Trends are only there for a short period so don’t worry about trying to stay on top of, and following them all.

It makes much more sense to build your wardrobe with timeless pieces, and add a trend or two in to change things up as ones come around that suit your style.

All trends do not work for everyone, so don’t try to force it. Generally, the only people that can get away with that are teenagers.

Becoming a slave to trends leads to impulse shopping, unsustainable wardrobes, and the keeping up with the Jones’ which is a game that no one ever wins.

Stay true to yourself and you will be much happier for it.

Good luck and happy capsule wardrobe building!

Stay safe!

  1. Oh, how I wish I could wear that pink dress and heels. Ironically, my shape and size are perfect for the dress…but I’m a bit long in the tooth to pull it off totally. Nonetheless, style wise, much of this capsule is bang on up my alley. Thank you for the major fun factor with this post. Cheers, Ardith

    • I’m really digging on the pink dress too…and the pink slip ons.

I think it would also work on my body since it would give the illusion of hips. I’d love to be able to try it on but I don’t think the Nordstrom Canada site has it which is disappointing.

I had fun putting this one together. It was kind of like going through my closet. 😁

Have a great weekend! Like that’s even a thing now 😂
