How to Wear a Slip Dress – One Dress 10 Ways

This one above is the Japanese GoWeave Cross Back Slip Dress, and was sent to me by Everlane as part of their spring/summer roll out and it is a different style than my other one. 

It is a thicker fabric, and the straps cross across the back. I would recommend taking your regular size in this dress because I went down a size and is JUST fits.

Since I went down a size in the GoWeave jumpsuit, I figured the fit would be similar.

It isn’t.

Luckily I am not very busty so it works, but my regular size would have been a better choice. I am 5’3″ and it hits me at the perfect midi length. It also comes in hazel, bright blue, and white. 

If I was only allowed to have one dress in my wardrobe a slip dress would be that choice because of the look, the fit, and how very versatile it is.

Below are 10 outfits that I put together using this slip dress

I am starting with the basic slip dress look. It is ideal for summer and can easily be dressed up or down by changing footwear, hairstyle, and accessories.

I’m not one to wear a strappy tank without anything over it, but I do like this look. I also like that it isn’t sheer so you don’t have to wear a slip underneath, and I am just wearing a strapless bra. 

This look is the same as above with the addition of a white shirt.

I love a good white shirt and last week I had a post on How to Wear a White Shirt.

In that post, I am wearing this same white shirt under a slip dress instead of over, with boots for a completely different look.

So I guess we can make that How to Style a Slip Dress 11 Ways instead of 10 😉

Another one of my wardrobe staples is an oversized blazer and I get a lot of use out of this one. 

Worn over a slip dress either buttoned or not, with the sleeves rolled up, and some bright sneakers and you have a casual chic look.

Once again with a few changes, you can take this outfit to a night look.

See how versatile it is?

The epitome of the 90s style is a slip dress with a white t-shirt and Converse.

Any white tee will do. Converse lows or highs, it doesn’t matter.

Even a white bodysuit would work well, and might even be preferable if you don’t like to have to worry about tucking or bunching.

A classic 90s look that I hope never goes away.

If you like the cool sexy vibe, of the “I just rolled out of bed and might or might not be in my pyjamas” look then this one is for you.

A kimono over a slip dress and some mules (which look like slippers is a really easy look.

The crochet bag I bought at Zara which I love.

The kimono is also from Zara but from about 3 years ago so I linked another long floral style in a lovely light green. I also really like this one from Free People. 

Another classic slip dress look. There is nothing quite like the perfectly worn-in denim jacket.

I’ve had mine for over 20 years now and it is the perfect fade, with worn elbows, and sight fraying. I highly recommend the Levis Ex-Boyfriend Trucker Jackets for the fit and the number of washes that you can get it in. 

Mine started as really dark denim and is perfect now. I’m going to be pretty upset when she decided to go on me. This was a long work in progress to get it to this point 😉

There is no simpler night outfit than a slip dress with a leather jacket. Throw on a pair of brightly coloured heels and you complete the look. 

I also like to add some matching red lipstick. In this day and age though you may have to forfeit the lipstick for a nice facemask.

I just received my floral face mask from Moji Mask and its really nice. It would go with this outfit perfectly. 

They list new prints Mon-Fri at 10 pm EST so if you see one that you want, you have to jump on when you find it or it will be gone.  

I also have this one from a different company which is also like a lot. It’s my casual look mask 😉

This look would also work well for How to Style a Slip dress in the fall.

A sweater worn over a slip dresses easily, making it look more like a skirt. If you were styling this slip dress for winter you could also pair it with some kneehigh boots, tights, and a long wool coat. 

What would that be…look 12 now?

Layer your favourite band t-shirt under a slip dress, roll up the sleeves, and throw on some snazzy boots. Some statement jewellery would complete the look.

These boots I bought on Poshmark for an amazing deal. I am not very thrilled that I am not getting very much use out of them right now since I barely leave the house. 

They are called the Isabel Marant Dexton Patch Boot and I often find them listed on Poshmark, and eBay. 

Some people may think it is gross, but I really love second-hand footwear. I would say that about 65% of the shoes I own are preowned. 

This look may not be up everyone’s alley but I like how easy it is. Ultimately the slip dress ends up working as a camisole top and a slip. It’s not bulky, and very easy to wear.

I chose a leather skirt (faux leather) because I thought it made a great fall look.

You could layer it under any skirt that was the right length though, and since it works as a slip it would work under your more sheer skirts that you may usually shy away from.
