We had a pretty busy weekend so I didn’t have much time to sit and work on any posts until tonight, so bear with me if this is more scattered and disjointed than usual 😉  Saturday was exceptionally long and involved driving all over the place while Tom kept playing Norwegian death metal covers of hit pop songs. You truly haven’t lived until you have heard a death metal version of Hello by Adele. I wanted to jump out of the moving vehicle :/  Today there was a Star Wars collectors convention that Tom and Roo went to, and then they went to see the new Solo movie. Since Merle and I aren’t as big of Star Wars fans as those two we decided skip out (sleep in) and then did our own thing (which involved a LOT of walking). So I am tired, cranky, and possibly mildly incoherent. Is a 7:30 pm coffee a bad idea? I don’t find that it keeps me up at night but it may help me to gather my thoughts while I am trying to rush through and entire weekend of chores in 3 hours.

I had an amazon gift card so I ordered myself some Crest White Strips. Does anyone else have to skip a day in between using them because their teeth are sore? Do you think skipping a day hinders the whitening process? I wish I could afford a teeth whitening procedure at the dentist but I don’t think my insurance covers cosmetic procedures like that, so White Strips and sore teeth it is.

We got cable a few months ago because there was a bundle deal that was cheaper than our current internet plan. This is the first time Merle has ever had cable so she his experiencing commercials for the first time. She pointed out that the same woman is in three different commercials that she has seen today. I found it funny that she noticed that because I tune out every commercial, probably from years of experience. I also notice that our PVR is 99.8% full with Sponge Bob recordings. I need to teach her to delete them after watching :/

I am ending this with a confession that our spending hiatus when in to the shitter this weekend which is giving me anxiety. I guess I can only swear to do better next week right?

This was a hard week. If you didn’t hear, on Monday Toronto had a van attack. Ten people are dead and 14 others are wounded after a man purposefully ran over people on Yonge St. I couldn’t believe it when I saw the news. Even now it’s still hard to wrap my head around because you just want to know why? He was apprehended soon after but the reason behind the attack is still not certain. A Toronto Fundraising site has raised 1.5 million as of now, so here is the link if you wish to donate to the cause.

On a more positive note they caught the Golden State Killer after 40 years using online DNA sites. This has caused a slight uproar in the Geneology/DNA research community in regards to accessing peoples’ DNA without their “permission” to help them solve this crime. Lots of people say it’s a slippery slope (I hate that term) but I say if you can use my DNA to help find a criminal than use it. If you can use my DNA to try to solve cold cases, to help find the identities of Jon and Jane Does, and even to understand and potentially cure genetic diseases then please do. While I initially took the DNA test it was to piece together my heritage because my dad was adopted. But the potential is so much more than I even realized.

Sandals are the one area that I always seem to have trouble with, because I can never find a pair that I like in a price point that I can afford. I refuse to pay an arm and a leg for something that I am only going to get a few months wear from every season, so I try to veer away from styles that are too trendy to get more than one season from them.

I have had only one pair of sandals each summer for the last 8 or 9 years. My current sandals I bought from Etsy three years ago (I think) and the pair before that I had for 4-5 years. I don’t really have a need multiple pairs since I tend to wear sneakers and slip-ons more often than sandals, but I am due for a new pair. I was leaning towards Birkenstocks in the Daloa Ankle Strap style but I can’t find them around here and I really don’t want to order from the U.S. They would be a pair that I could wear for years so spending $100 isn’t crazy in that instance.

While I was scouring online trying to find alternatives to the Birks I like I found a lot of cute styles that fell under $50. When I am looking for cute shoes for a great price the first place I visit is Zara because they seem to hit it out of the park every season in the shoe department. They ALWAYS have the cutest styles, and there is never a time that I don’t have a pair of their shoes in my online basket.

Another great spot to hit is DSW. They have so many names brands at discounted prices with customer reviews on each style to help guide your decision. Finding a pair that looks great and lasts all season shouldn’t break the bank so I rounded up some cute styles that all fall at or under $50.

Are you still on the hunt for sandals or am I the only one?

Spring and autumn are my favourite seasons because they toe the line of the weather I hate and allow me dress in the layers that I love. The problem with spring is that you are ready to pack away your winter gear……I’ve put mine away and pulled it out again three times already in the last month, but it’s not yet warm enough to go without a jacket. The answer to most of our weather fashion problems? Layers.

You want to wear a dress to embrace spring but you know your going to regret it? Layer a dress under a light jacket or blazer, add some tights or socks and a pair of low to mid calf boots (I’m digging the Little House on a Prairie style above). Need something chic? A slim black turtleneck, cropped trousers, a leather jacket, with a touch of animal print.

We all have an oversized cardigan that we love, so to wear it when the weather is cooler, just layer another sweater underneath. Can’t wait to bust out your favourite denim jacket? You can layer a hooded sweatshirt under with a fitted leather skirt and some slip on shoes for a casual yet cool vibe.

One of my favourite things to do is to try and find new ways to wear things. I don’t break my closet in to seasonal wardrobes. I tried that once and ended up just carrying most of it through to the next season anyway so everything I have basically falls in to an all season category (obvious exceptions being winter boots and coat). Even beanies I wear for 3 out of the 4 seasons. Since I don’t break them in to seasons it gives me a lot of opportunity to try to find different ways to wear pieces that would normally be labelled as “not weather appropriate”, so I need to get creative to find ways to wear them.

Some combinations I have are:

  • a classic button down under a slip dress with tights or boots (or maybe a button down bodysuit to prevent bunching).
  • my leather or denim jacket worn underneath my oversized camel coat.
  • skirts with boots and oversized sweaters.
  • cropped or rolled denim, light jacket, and shoes with no socks (or non visible sockettes).
  • turtlenecks layered under a buttoned denim jacket with jeans for a chic Canadian tuxedo.
  • blazers with oversized sweaters and jeans.
  • t-shirt dresses over leather leggings, and a light jacket, blazer or oversized cardigan.
  • and don’t forget the accessories. Scarves and hats are great for transitional weather and for changing up outfit looks.

That’s just a few of things I’ve paired in my head and/or I am wearing so far. I’m looking forward to seeing what else I can find in my closet that I’ve never worn together before.

Do you have some favourite transitional outfits?
