As the warm weather approaches, a lot of women want to embrace the allure of the French girl aesthetic for summer 2024. This trend, often referred to as “French girl summer,” encapsulates the very essence of effortless Parisian chic.

People romanticize French women’s fashion because it embodies an effortless elegance that many find both aspirational yet attainable.

It is more focused and refined, paying less attention to the fleeting fast-fashion fads.

The allure lies in how French women seem to master the art of looking chic without appearing to try too hard.

Although, it can be difficult to achieve this when we are bombarded with new and exciting things to add to our wardrobes every which way we turn.

This style emphasizes timeless, high-quality pieces over fleeting trends, This is a more minimalist approach to fashion, emphasizing on more timeless pieces making it both sustainable and enduring.

Combining this with a natural beauty ethos that favours minimal makeup and embraces authenticity, it resonates with those seeking a more genuine and less commercialized sense of style.

Something more gentle, maybe? If that makes sense.

We also have the cultural influence of Paris as a global fashion hub and the portrayal of French women in cinema and media as icons of sophistication that further enhances this romanticization.

I mean, who hasn’t paused a French movie to dissect in detail a woman’s outfit before? If you watch French movies that is.

Ultimately, French fashion is seen as an extension of a lifestyle that values quality, simplicity, and the enjoyment of life’s simple pleasures, making it an enduring source of inspiration worldwide.

Is this true across the board? Obviously not, as nothing is, but as outside observers this is how we interpret it.

I seek a bit more simplicity in summer because I hate putting in a lot of effort to feel sweaty and uncomfortable.

Easy is what I seek, and when it comes to summer fashion, no one does it quite like the French.

The french summer fashion is a timeless aesthetic that exudes effortless elegance, blending classic pieces with a relaxed, easy-going vibe.

A Guide to French Summer Style

The Pillars of French Summer Style

Effortless Elegance: French summer style is all about looking effortlessly put-together. The goal is to appear naturally chic without trying too hard.

This means opting for outfits that have a relaxed yet polished feel, steering clear of anything overly complicated or fussy.

Look for pieces like wide-leg flowy trousers, mid-length skirts, classic or vintage straight-leg jeans, and boat neck tops.

Small feminine details like lace, silk, ribbons, and bows are also something to look for.

Neutral and Softer Colors: The colour palette is a blend of neutrals and pastels. Think whites, beiges, navies, and blacks, with the occasional soft pastel.

BUT, bright colours are still used sparingly, typically as accents rather than the main focus like shoes or accessories. But not always…

There is always wiggle room. Like the brighter blue short sleeve knit, paired with straight leg denim, and red flats still has that classically French simple silhouette.

Simple Silhouettes: They tend to favour clean lines and classic shapes.

Pieces like A-line dresses, high-waisted trousers, tailored shorts (yes people wear shorts in France), and simple, elegant tops are staples.

The idea is to choose pieces that are comfortable but not overtly casual in the just rolled out of bed look that a lot of us are guilty of, especially if we are just running some quick errands.

Breathable Fabrics: To beat the summer heat, lightweight, natural fabrics are important. Linen, cotton, and silk are popular choices, providing comfort and style in equal measure.

Classic Pieces: Key items in a French girl’s summer wardrobe include Breton striped tops, sundresses, wrap dresses, high-waisted jeans or shorts, and crisp button-down shirts.

These pieces are versatile and timeless, forming the foundation of countless outfits, they would also make a perfect small travel wardrobe.

Minimal Accessories: Less is more when it comes to accessories. And honestly, in the summer I don’t want stacks and layers of jewellery to sweat under.

A simple hat, a woven basket bag, a silk scarf, and a pair of chic sunglasses are all you need. Maybe a simple pair of earrings, and a necklace to add some visual interest to your neckline.

These accessories add a touch of sophistication without overwhelming the look.

Comfortable Footwear: Prioritizing comfort without sacrificing style is key. Ballet flats, espadrilles, sandals, and low-heeled pumps are perfect for a day of strolling through the city or lounging by the beach.

Also note that although a white sneaker is considered a classic, french women are deviating from this as well and embracing the variety of coloured sneakers that are flooding the market at the moment.

Simple Makeup: The beauty look is minimal and natural. Glowing skin, a touch of mascara, and a bold lip colour like red or coral are all you need.

Hair is often styled in loose waves or a simple updo, emphasizing a carefree, yet refined appearance.

Vintage Influences: This is one of my favourites. This style often incorporates vintage elements.

Whether it’s a retro-inspired dress a classic handbag, or in this case a vintage feminine bed jacket, and retro-shaped sunglasses. These pieces add a unique touch and a sense of timeless appeal.

How to Dress Like a French Woman in Summer

Invest in Quality Basics: Start by building a collection of high-quality basics. Look for pieces that are versatile and can be easily mixed and matched.

A good place to start is with a crisp white shirt (I prefer a men’s style in no-wrinkle fabric), a pair of well-fitted jeans, and flats.

Embrace Simplicity: When in doubt, keep it simple. We can often go overboard with our summer wardrobes trying to compensate for wearing basics.

But hear me out, what if we keep the simplicity of basics but choose basics that are not so basic?

Something with a fun or interesting shape, detail, or colour.

During the other months, we can make our basics more exciting with layers.

In summer you are just stuck with those basic pieces, so if we source out some basics that are interesting versus just utilitarian then we can make our simple outfits a little something more.

This makes it easy to put together and avoid over-accessorizing which we default to when trying to make the basics more interesting.

The goal is to look effortlessly stylish, not overly styled.

Focus on Fit: Make sure your clothes fit well, but also fit in the way that you are comfortable with. If you like your pants a size bigger for comfort and styling ease, then do that.

Just remember that tailoring can make a huge difference, transforming an ordinary piece into something that looks custom-made.

So if you have pieces that you love but don’t wear and you can’t figure out why, maybe it is the fit.

Add a Touch of Vintage: Incorporate vintage-inspired pieces to give your wardrobe a unique flair. Visit thrift stores or vintage shops to find one-of-a-kind items that add character to your look.

I’ve been vintage shopping online hardcore lately and finding all kinds of treasures that I haven’t been able to replicate with in-person shopping recently.

This is one reason why I am a huge online shopping fan.

It opens up a whole world (literally).

Prioritize Comfort: Let’s try choosing clothes that are not only stylish but also comfortable. No more sacrificing comfort for fashion.

By following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to mastering the French girl summer style.

Embrace the effortless elegance, enjoy the comfort of breathable fabrics, and add your personal touch to create a look that is both timeless and uniquely yours.

At the end of the day though, the true essence of French girl summer style goes beyond just the clothes. It’s an entire attitude.

One of relaxed self-assurance and celebrating life’s simple pleasures.

I was watching an Instagram video about noticing the small things, and they took photos and videos of just the regular things that most would overlook and think were mundane, but the beauty was in the simplicity.

So as we are curating our pared-down warm-weather capsule this summer season, let’s not forget to also cultivate this same vibe in our lives.
