I decided that this week I was going to go with how to build a summer capsule wardrobe on a budget. I do capsule wardrobe budget posts for every season, but I found that after this last super fun year and a bit (note the sarcasm), we are all a little more cautious about our finances.

I know that I am.

I’ve usually think about purchases long and hard before making the jump, but this year I have been even more strict with myself about it.

That isn’t even just for large purchases, I do that for $20 purchases too because I am trying really hard not to fall back into old habits of impulse buys that make me feel temporarily better.

Putting together a more conscious wardrobe is my intent, and I want to show you that even if you are on a budget you can do that as well.

You just have to make more thoughtful purchases…I’m not even sure that is the word that I am looking for. What I am trying to say is that you need to think about it more before you purchase.

It is normal to love and desire many things, but if it doesn’t work with what you already have, it isn’t going to get the use that you think it will.

Before I commit to any purchase I try to think of five ways that I can wear the item. If I can come up with ideas quickly then it is generally a safe bet.

If I struggle, then I think about it for longer because I don’t want to give up my limited closet space to items that don’t get used.

If you are starting from scratch and trying to figure out How to Start a Capsule Wardrobe, you can check out this post where I break down building a capsule wardrobe beginning with what you already own.

It focuses on a work wardrobe but these 5 steps can easily be applied to building any capsule wardrobe.

If you are just eager for summer and want to see how you can freshen up your current summer wardrobe, or need some summer capsule wardrobe basics to tie everything together then this post might give you some ideas of what pieces will give you a lot of use in building a capsule wardrobe for summer.

When you are building a capsule wardrobe it is pretty easy to search online, find one that you like and then try to copy the entire thing.

Here is the thing. If my selections hit your style right on the head, that means your style is like mine which will be easier for you.

But for most of us out there, we need to use these capsule wardrobe ideas as inspiration and a jumping-off point.

You might like everything but realistically know that it will not work for your lifestyle, climate, or even your personal style.

That’s okay, and totally the norm with this kind of thing. If you are lucky enough to know your style well it will be easy to adapt any capsule wardrobe to work for you.

If you are like most and are unsure of what will work, or what you even want then you have a little extra work for yourself, but believe me, it will be worth it in the long run.

Pick the pieces that you like and start to build from there. Pair them up with the tried and true pieces that make you feel the best about yourself when you wear them.

Because what is the point of a wardrobe if it doesn’t make you feel good when you wear it?

Do you have a style?

Do love stripes, white, and blue? You might lean towards preppy.

Love neutrals and timeless pieces? Classic is probably for you.

Does Sezane make you swoon? Maybe your style is more Romantic or “French”.

Or maybe you don’t fit under a certain style category and you change it up frequently.

You can still build a capsule wardrobe if this is the case. All you need to do is makes sure that there is a cohesive enough colour palette that everything will work together when you are mixing and matching your wardrobe.

Because mixing and matching my wardrobe to come up with new outfit combinations is one of my favourite parts of the capsule wardrobe process.

Remember that just because you can’t afford one of the trend items of the season like the Loewe woven straw basket bag, it doesn’t mean that you can’t find the same look for much less.

The straw bag I included resembles the Loewe bag and can be used as a backpack as well which makes it a more versatile option in my books.

This bag from Asos also is a great option.

While summer is the season that I like to dress for the least, I know that a lot of people are looking forward to it in hopes that it is the start of better times ahead.

I struggle with dressing in summer more than any other season, so think of this post as my way to also figure out what the hell I am going to wear this summer, and how I am going to wear it.

I hope you have been inspired to build a summer wardrobe.

Stay safe.
