Today was a bit cooler which was a nice break from the extended heat wave we have been happening, and I cannot stop thinking about fall. There’s something about fall that invites a reset.
I feel it, do you feel it? Maybe it’s the back-to-school energy ingrained into our collective memory or the return of structure after the less motivating time of summer.
Seriously, though, back to school was the most exciting time for my wardrobe as a teen, and that has carried through to adulthood.
Whatever the reason, September is the perfect time to pause, breathe, and rethink the way we dress.
If your wardrobe feels chaotic, stale, or like it just doesn’t represent who you are anymore, a minimalist fall capsule wardrobe could be the answer.
Not just because it’s chic, but because it offers clarity.
Why the Reset Matters
Fall is a natural time of transition. The weather shifts, routines solidify, and there’s a quiet momentum in the air.
A wardrobe reset isn’t about getting rid of everything or starting from scratch.
It’s about stripping things down to what truly matters, what fits your life, your style, and your values.
If you’ve been overwhelmed by too many choices, uninspired by your daily outfits, or stuck in a cycle of impulse purchases, a minimalist reset gives you the chance to start fresh, with purpose.

What Is a Minimalist Capsule Wardrobe, Really?
Let’s be clear: minimalism doesn’t mean boring.
It doesn’t mean your entire closet needs to be beige. It means building a wardrobe that serves your lifestyle and reflects your style in a distilled, thoughtful way.
It’s editing down to the essentials that you actually wear and love, and allowing each piece to carry more weight and intention.
This capsule is grounded in:
- Quality over quantity
- Functional silhouettes
- A neutral or muted colour palette with a bit of bold
- Timelessness and personal style versus trend-chasing
- Pieces that mix and match easily
The Core of Your Fall Minimalist Reset
Here’s a foundational capsule wardrobe list to begin your reset. These are not trendy “must-haves”, they’re quiet, hardworking heroes you’ll reach for again and again.
Which will vary depending on your style personality. I have kept this one pretty minimalist because it is easier to visualize working in your closet versus the bolder, more personality pieces.
Does that mean they are boring and basic? No. I tried to incorporate interesting shapes, or cuts to elevate it to a not-so-basic, basic.
1. Tailored Jacket or Coat
Long, structured, and neutral (camel, navy, or charcoal). It pulls every outfit together.
2. Crisp Button-Up Shirt
White or softer blue. Oversized or fitted, depending on your preference. Layered under sweaters or worn solo.
3. Straight-Leg Trousers or Slim Jeans
Pick your favourite silhouette in jeans and trousers. Just make sure they fit the way you want.
4. Lightweight Knit Sweater
Merino or cashmere. Choose one with a perfect neckline (crew, mock, or funnel).
5. Relaxed Turtleneck
A soft essential you’ll wear on repeat.
6. Minimalist Ankle Boots
Sleek, walkable, and weather-friendly. Black leather always works, but brown suede is a showstopper.
7. Oversized Blazer, Soft Jacket, or Cape
This brings polish to basics without feeling overdone.
8. Your Favourite Tees or Long Sleeves
Fitted and neutral, they’re layering MVPs.
9. Structured Handbag or Crossbody
Streamlined and utilitarian, without fussy hardware.
10. One “Mood” Piece
A scarf, belt, or bold knit that adds depth while still aligning with your pared-back palette. Maybe even a little fringe handbag in a great colour.

Colour Palette: Keep It Cohesive
Fall minimalism works best when your palette is cohesive. Think stone, ecru, black, espresso, olive, slate, or navy. You don’t need only neutrals, but let any colour you bring in feel intentional.
I kept paired down with grey, black, olive, navy, brown, and taupe. My intentional colour to add was cobalt blue which amplifies the cool base of most of these colours.
Styling Tip: Use 3-2-1
A helpful trick for minimalist dressing:
- 3 main base pieces (pant, top, outerwear)
- 2 supporting neutrals (shoes, bag)
- 1 visual point of interest (accessory, shape, or contrast)
This keeps outfits grounded but not dull.

Mindset Shift: Dress for the Life You Have
One of the most powerful parts of a minimalist reset is dressing for your real life, not your fantasy life.
Do you work from home? Commute daily? Spend weekends at the farmer’s market? Dress for those realities, not just the aspirational Pinterest board.
Where to Shop (Mindfully)
You don’t have to buy everything new, this is also a great opportunity to explore:
Secondhand marketplaces: eBay, The RealReal, Poshmark, or local consignment shops
Quality basics brands: Uniqlo, COS, Quince, Everlane
Investment pieces: Filippa K, Totême, The Row (or preloved versions)
You’re not chasing trends, you’re investing in longevity.
Reset Doesn’t Mean Erase
You don’t need to get rid of everything to start over. Try this:
- Pull everything out and sort into keep, maybe, and no piles
- Ask: Would I buy this again today?
- Put the “maybes” away for a while, like in the back part of your wardrobe.
If you don’t reach for them, they’re likely not serving you.
Remember: Less, But Better
Fall is the perfect time to get quiet with your wardrobe. To ask: What do I want my clothes to say about me? and How do I want to feel getting dressed every day?
A minimalist capsule wardrobe isn’t about conforming to someone else’s rules; it’s about reclaiming your personal style with less noise.
And that, in itself, can be revolutionary. So go have fun with it.

SHOP THE UK LINKS

This post was definitely speaking to me… the way I am feeling about my wardrobe is as you described! Love the colorways and the blue pops. Thanks for the inspiration Sara!
Hey Sara, another great collection for inspiration! I love the COS cape – how do we purchase here in Canada?
Hi Alison, for Cos I either buy in-store or via the Canadian site (and deal with the duty fees). I’ve had luck with in-store having them bring in the piece from another store if it’s in stock. But sometimes the same products aren’t available across the board, or occasionally take a bit longer to hit the Canadian market so I check back frequently.
