How to Build an Eclectic Preppy Spring Capsule Wardrobe

There is something about spring that makes me want to dress like I have joined the rowing team at Harvard. I actually think I would be better at fencing, but I digress.

And even though I absolutely know that is not my style, it doesn’t stop me from sourcing out some inspiration on how I can combine elements to make it my own.

This is what I love about the hybrid wardrobes.

You don’t have to commit and jump all-in to a particular style. I actually think that trying to fit yourself under one style heading is detrimental to your personal style.

It is more natural (and fun) to explore and embrace a variety of different styles that vary depending on your desire and moods each day.

For instance, I like to mix preppy and sporty elements. I find that they mix well and are easy for me to wear.

In this wardrobe, I paired elements of preppy with more eclectic choices in order to present you with a very wearable wardrobe that showcases preppy style with a more laidback, cool girl vibe.

I didn’t want it to have the elitest, quiet luxury bend that it is usually known for.

So while spring isn’t quite here yet, both fashion and stores are telling us it is time to get prepared because by the time it is finally here they will be shifting to summer.

We are not going to pack away those heavy winter coats yet but that doesn’t mean that we can’t bring out the lighter, more playful pieces.

This wardrobe is for you if you’re someone who loves a classic, put-together preppy style but also enjoys the unexpected flair of eclectic fashion.

A little edgy, a little rock, maybe a bit of quirky, whimsy, or campiness.

I figured why not mix them? Or at least try to mix them because it sometimes doesn’t play out like I envision.

The goal is to combine preppy with eclectic to create a look that’s polished but never predictable. More like classic staples with a twist of personality.

And we all know I love a bit of personality in my wardrobe.

So let’s get started with the pieces. It is 12 items of clothing plus shoes and accessories to help build a variety of looks.

I will give a breakdown of why I picked certain pieces, and some eclectic preppy outfit ideas to get you inspired further down.

1. Start with Classic Preppy Staples

The foundation of preppy fashion is built on sort of classic, well-structured pieces. These are items that never go out of style due to trends and create a polished base for any outfit.

Some essentials to have in your spring wardrobe include:

Button-down shirts – Perfect for layering or wearing solo.

Blazers – A preppy must-have that instantly elevates any outfit.

Pleated skirts – Feminine, fun, and oh-so-classic.

Loafers or ballet flats – Chic and practical for everyday wear.

Cable-knit and cashmere sweaters – Light enough for spring but still cozy for breezy days.

These core pieces provide structure and a put-together feel, but we’re not stopping there.

2. Add a Dose of Eclectic Flair

Once you have your preppy base, it’s time to inject some personality with eclectic elements. This is the fun part.

Eclectic fashion is all about mixing unexpected colours, textures, and patterns to create a unique look that feels personal. Here are some easy ways to do it:

Play with patterns – Pair a striped top with a floral skirt for an unexpected mix.

Mix vintage and modern – Try a thrifted blazer with a structured dress.

Statement accessories – colourful jewellery, bold sunglasses, or quirky handbags.

Experiment with textures – A satin camisole under a knit cardigan

Unexpected footwear choices – Try a classic with an edgy element

The goal is to keep that polished preppy vibe but introduce elements that make the outfit feel uniquely yours.

But you can even go a step further and go back to step one and find pieces that have interesting shapes or details.

Like instead of a classic blazer I went with a striped one that has a mandarin collar and slight a-line shape.

3. Balance is Key

The key to making this mix work is balance. If you go all-in on eclectic pieces, you might lose the preppy aesthetic.

On the other hand, if you stick too closely to preppy staples, the look won’t feel as fresh and exciting. We want to strike the perfect balance:

Stick to a neutral base – A white button-down and beige trousers can anchor a more playful patterned jacket.

Use colour thoughtfully – If you’re wearing a bright patterned skirt, keep the top simple but add colourful accessories to tie it together.

Layer smartly – Pair structured pieces (like a blazer) with more relaxed pieces (like a ruffled blouse) for contrast.

Don’t overthink it – If it feels too “matchy,” add something unexpected—like a vintage scarf or oversized earrings.

4. Key Pieces

These are some of the pieces that I chose, and why I think they will work.

Jeans: Instead of classic dark denim which is quintessentially preppy try a slightly distressed, light denim for spring.

Make sure they are a bit relaxed so you can avoid the perfectly preppy fit. We want to mix it up.

A pair of light denim was on my spring wish list along with these mules from last week, this blazer or the one I included today, and a classic tote.

I think you can do a lot with those.

Khakis: I want a khaki pant in a boyfriend fit with ankle length or cropped inseam.

Blazer: But not an academic style blazer, something interesting that we can use as a light jacket as well.

Interesting Knitwear: I have a vintage graphic knit sweater with short sleeves that adds a lot of visual interest. But on the other end I have the stereotypical poplin and v-neck combo in a hybrid sweater.

Yes, you heard me right, a hybrid sweater. Don’t knock it until you try it. It is very Sacai coded with the mixed media construction.

Pleated Skirt: Maybe try something with an asymmetrical hemline, a print, colour, or something a little outside the traditional pleated skirt box.

Sneakers: But not any sneakers, we are trying something that is a bit edgy and futuristic looking with the slip-on, no lace Taekwondo style. I told you I bought these in black on my last post and I think they are going to be big for spring and summer.

Boat Shoes: Yes they are back. Technically they were back last year but it was kind of the start of the trend where the big-name designers had them out and the fashionistas that could afford the cult Miu Miu pair were the ones wearing them.

Now they have trickled down to the masses (which is us) and we are seeing a larger variety of styles, colours, and price points.

Ballet flats: Try something with an edge or in a bold colour or print. You can have a lot of fun with footwear if you let yourself.

Bags: I am a self-proclaimed bag person and one that I am seeking is a great brown suede tote like what I included today.

The colour is so rich, the size is perfect, and it is a classic bag that will take you through many different circumstances.

After the classic we want to try a bold colour bag, and something edgy. It gives a nice variety to balance out different looks.

Too preppy? Use the yellow or black/snake print bag.

Too eclectic? Bring in the preppy with the classic tote.

5. Eclectic Preppy Outfit Inspiration

Still need some inspiration? Here are a few outfit ideas to help you visualize how to blend these two styles that you can build from your own wardrobe:

Look 1: Classic Meets Edgy – White button-down, cuffed distressed jeans, blazer, socks and boat shoes.

Look 2: Polished with a Twist – Striped shirt, khakis, fun patterned socks, and ballet flats.

Look 3: Feminine & Unexpected – Pleated skirt, graphic tee, oversized cardigan, and colourful or print flats.

Look 4: Edgy Preppy – Trousers, ruffled blouse, vintage leather jacket, and platform sandals.

6. Have Fun & Be Confident

The best part about mixing styles is that there are no strict rules. Fashion should be fun, expressive, and an extension of your personality.

Don’t be afraid to try something new because maybe you’ll fall in love with an unexpected colour combination or a unique layering trick. My favourite colour combo right now is like a mid blue with burgundy.

The key is to wear what makes you feel confident and comfortable.

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your wardrobe, experiment with new pieces, and have fun with your personal style.
