These past few days have been unseasonably cooler and I got to do a little Fall Girl Summer with my personal style, which isn’t actually a thing but I wish that it was. Once there is that touch of coolness to the wind it brings out my desire to jump full into the upcoming season.
If you are anything like me and have a preference for your fall wardrobe and fall fashion then you probably wish that you could walk into a Ralph Lauren ad and come out prepared for fall.
The whole Ralph Lauren aesthetic is right up my alley and it is going to be a sad day when he retires and completely steps away.
But that doesn’t mean that we still can’t embrace what he gave us year after year because honestly, it is timeless.
The thing about preppy fashion is that it has a long history that has had some shifts, but at its core, it remains the same.
Unless we are talking about the Gen Z version of preppy which is straight-up not. But that is a whole other topic because a fluorescent pink Nirvana sweatshirt is not preppy, and you can’t change my mind.
So with that we are going to jump into a little bit about the roots of where the preppy style came from and how we can integrate this into our wardrobe.

What is the History of Preppy Style?
If we go all the way back to the 1920s we can see that preppy fashion traces its origins to the Ivy League universities in the Northeastern United States.
Most of us are familiar with these roots.
This is where students from affluent families attended schools like Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. Apparently not much changes in that area.
The style was initially inspired by the clothing that was worn for leisure activities such as tennis, sailing, and golf. All of my favourites which is totally tongue in cheek because I don’t play sports nor am I sad about that.
The key elements of this clothing were blazers (often with an insignia), oxford shirts, chinos, and loafers. Which is both practical and stylish and completely makes sense as to why it such a classic style.
As the 1950s rolled around the Ivy League look became more defined and widely recognized during this decade. Key pieces included button-down shirts, crew neck sweaters, cardigans, penny loafers, and khaki pants.
In the 60’s it started to trickle down into mainstream fashion, as it became adopted by people outside of the Ivy League campuses.
Brands like Brooks Brothers, Lacoste, and J. Press, which had been staples for Ivy League students, started to influence broader American fashion.
During the 1980s there was a shift and it was during this time that brands like Ralph Lauren, L.L. Bean, and Vineyard Vines became synonymous with preppy fashion.
The style was characterized by bright colours, pastel polo shirts, argyle sweaters, and boat shoes, often with a sense of irony.
This is the preppy that many of us know and are familiar with. It is like the cliché rich kids from a John Hughes movie.
Incoming to the 90s and 2000s, preppy fashion once again evolved. Designers like Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren updated the style with modern touches while maintaining its classic roots.
And fast forward to today and we have seen a resurgence of preppy fashion over the last few seasons. Especially this recent fall/winter shows.
But, my favourite by far was last season’s Dries Van Noten S/S 2024 show.
The way he played with colour and layers was magical.
I am going to miss his genius.
What are some key pieces to build a modern preppy wardrobe?
I wanted to keep the classic core of the preppiness but also modernize it by incorporating some trending silhouettes and colours.
Burgundy is a big trend that is really starting to be showcased in stores, it is a more subtle and easier to wear version of last year’s bright red trend.
It almost works like a neutral because of the undertones.
Overall we saw relaxed silhouettes instead of extremely fitted shirts and waistlines.
We want some give and slouch to allow for casualness and layering.
For accessories I kept it fairly minimal with a classic belt which I own but in black. I think I prefer this burgundy-ish brown. It’s such a rich colour.
I rounded it out with some sports socks, glasses, handbags in a variety of colours, and a vintage pearl necklace.
You could also do a vintage pearl collar which completely elevates the look of a shirt. I found one myself at a vintage show a couple of years ago.
It’s the little statement pieces like that, which make a huge impact.
The Blazer
I know…groundbreaking. But, bear with me. There is a larger variety of options than in previous decades.
For several years now we have embraced the oversized blazer. So much that is is now considered a classic silhouette, but there has also been a recent shift back to fitted styles.
This allows us to switch things up as our mood or style wants.
The options are endless.
You can do neutrals, pastels, tweeds, plaids, or herringbone. There are a plethora of vintage Ralph Lauren blazers many with the chest insignia available in the secondhand market as well.
The Midi Skirt
Pleated skirts are a standard preppy piece, updated in midi lengths with new patterns like plaid or tartan, as well as solid colours, modern fabrics, and even leather.
A leather midi skirt also has a quiet luxury feel, but for this fall preppy wardrobe, I went with a classic pleated khaki because I have been incorporating a lot of leather skirts recently.
So if you want a leather midi skirt option you can visit some of my recent posts like the Chloé inspired wardrobe from two weeks ago.
The Tailored Trousers
Every wardrobe needs a great pair of trousers regardless of your personal style.
I lean towards a more relaxed wide leg, but I also enjoy an ankle-skimming style in a slimmer silhouette.
We love a high waist in a neutral colour, but mid-rise is a common preference for those with shorter torsos.
And we also love them in more seasonal, textured fabrics like wool, or checks.
Just like blazers we have a huge variety of fits and silhouettes to choose from.
I suggest a variation so that you can have options to achieve multiple looks. We don’t want everything to be the same, change is good as are choices.
The Rugby Shirt
We have seen the striped rugby shirt kicking around since before spring and it isn’t going anywhere. If anything you are going to see it more.
There are also a lot of options when it comes to this style of shirt. You can go loose to slimmer and fitted, something that leans towards a traditional polo style, solid colours, or cropped.
The possibilities are endless. My preference leads to something more relaxed in a men’s style since the colour palette is usually more to my tastes.
I found a vintage Ralph Lauren grey and black striped version for myself on Poshmark for a steal, and Ebay is flooded with them in so many colour combinations.
Modernized Preppy Footwear
This means a classic style with a twist.
Think ballet flats in bright colours and embellishments.
Retro style sneakers in a burst of colour. There are so many to choose from now. I love the Adidas SL 72s, but I also have these yellow sneakers that I included which you can see me wearing today.
Don’t forget a riding boot that will work with dresses, shorts, over jeans, under jeans (wider leg), a loafer, and a boat shoe.
Boat shoes came back via Miu Miu and the versions that have come into the store level are great, like the animal print version I included in this preppy wardrobe.
Massimo Dutti shoes seem to sell out and restock at regular intervals so if your size is sold out I guarantee it will be back shortly.
Modern preppy style is about balancing the old with the new. Keeping the clean, classic, and polished look of traditional preppy fashion while also incorporating contemporary fits, colours, and influences.
This blend creates a style that is timeless yet relevant, making it adaptable and appealing to a larger audience. It’s not about showcasing your lineage or wealth anymore.
It is all about personal style.
