Are you are going to Amsterdam, Netherlands on your next trip, and don’t know what to pack? I have a what to pack for Amsterdam packing list with outfit ideas that will help you to fit right into this magical city.

Summer is obviously the most popular season for travel, and this post is going to show you how to build an 10 days in Amsterdam packing list for summer that you can apply to any future travel capsule wardrobe you may need.

The Netherlands has always been one of my top destinations since I was a teenager. Living in a canal apartment is actually one of my dream homes, although I don’t hold my breath for that ever becoming a reality 😉

There was also a time I was trying to learn to speak Dutch. This was before I jumped on to French. Dutch is such a fun language to speak. I wish that I stuck with it….I may actually visit it again.

Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands and one of the most popular tourist destinations worldwide. With its amazing culture, attractions, and extended daylight hours in summer it is no wonder that people are drawn to it.

While the regular day-to-day style of Europeans is dressier than your average North American, that doesn’t mean business casual.

It means properly planned out outfits when you are building your travel capsule, so you look and feel your best. Also remember that comfort is key, because you will be spending a lot of time walking and riding a bike (maybe).

This is also important to take in to consideration when you are choosing your footwear. Ask yourself, “will I be able to ride a bike in these”?

If riding bikes in Amsterdam is on your itinerary then you may want to amend some of your travel wardrobe choices.

My oldest daughter would try to kibosh bike riding, and my youngest is a crazy bike rider (and by crazy I don’t mean passionate about it 😂) so I’m not sure it would be worth the stress.

While riding a bike in a dress is normal in Amsterdam they are used to it so know how to do so comfortably. Having a pair of shorts or other slim leg pants in your Amsterdam packing list might be preferable.

The summer weather in Amsterdam can fluctuate being hot by day, and chilly at night, so a cardigan/sweater or light jacket are good choices.

By day you should be fine in your typical summer clothes, unless it rains which can cool the temperatures. Make sure that you have some warmer pieces for those days. Jeans and a sweater should suffice.

Amsterdam fashion has a laid back, but chic vibe which is easily to copy by just adding a blazer. Throw a blazer over anything and you have instantly elevated your look. It also makes for a great light jacket for night. See Emma Hill for some inspiration.

Her signature look is a blazer over everything and she ALWAYS looks so effortlessly put together.

They also like their vintage pieces so make sure to hone down your Amsterdam travel wardrobe so that you pack light enough to leave some room in your suitcase for any vintage treasures you may find. Packing cubes will help you to keep things compressed well.

Don’t forget your swimsuit, because The Netherlands has some nice beaches. It might also be a good idea to pack some footless black tights if you are packing shorter skirts or dresses.

Dutch women like to wear them if the weather is cooler, or when they are riding bikes in shorter dresses (especially if you are not used to riding a bike). They are also easy to remove and throw in your purse once the temperatures rise.

  1. Ah, Amsterdam, I love that city. I miss it even though I got to visit a number of times. It has beautiful canals…without the bad smells that you can encounter in Venice. It’s fun and fairly easy to navigate. There are so many restaurants with a range of cuisines from around the world. There is plenty to do and see. Its long history is captivating to this American. Amsterdam definitely deserves a cool travel wardrobe like this one. Cheers, Ardith

    • It was my dream city when I was 20 years old and wanted to be a flight attendant. I always wonder how that would have played out if I followed that path.

I don’t think Venice could smell as bad as Toronto did when the garbage collectors went on strike in the middle of summer. That was a horrible experience :/

I too find a city with a long history as captivating. It’s just such a foreign concept when you live in a country that barely makes a blip on the history pages. Which is funny because history is my passion and we don’t have a lot of it here for me to immerse myself in.
