Some where along the way Memorial Day weekend has almost turned into as big of an event as Black Friday when it comes to sales. I’m not sure when the meaning of the weekend switched to barbecues and shopping versus what the day really means, but these sales are far and wide. Even as a Canadian I have been bombarded with sales emails and coupon codes, so today’s Reads and Finds is compiled with things that are currently on sale.

Here are a few of the sales that you can find this weekend:

It’s a long weekend here for Victoria Day on Monday which is actually to commemorate Queen Victoria’s birthday but has turned in to the unofficial start of summer and probably the biggest drinking weekend of the year. So happy May two-four weekend, the nickname it was lovingly given after a 24 case of beer.

My mom told me that they sell Mac computers and laptops on The Shopping Channel which surprised me. It is also extremely tempting because I would like a laptop, and can get one by paying 12 monthly instalments which makes it actually a realistic option. It’s super tempting, but maybe I’ll wait and see what I owe for taxes first. I’m really dreading that phone call.

Today was sort of an epic write off, I admit. I pretty much spent a huge part of the day googling and reading articles on medieval facial reconstruction. One article would lead to another, then Youtube videos, and Wikipedia. It kind of just took over my day. I did manage to submit my taxes early this morning (to my accountant person to look over), change the sheets, and do some laundry so I guess it wasn’t all a waste. We were going to go thrifting but I saw an email from Value Village this morning saying it was a 50% off day pre-sale for card members which means that it would be epically busy, and picked over so we skipped it.

I 100% didn’t think I was going to get a post out for the weekend because my internet has been down for the last 36 hours. I thought it was an outage from the weather earlier in the week because a lot of people were complaining about outages, but it turns out that our internet company dropped off our new modem and left it at the front desk for us to pick up.

They called Tom to let him know and he forgot to tell me, so our internet cut out when they transferred our account to the new modem that I hadn’t set up yet because I was unaware it arrived.

Asos T-shirt Dress

Asos Kimono Shirt

T-shirt Dress • Asos | Hat • H&M similar (my kid sat on it and crushed it so I need a new one) |
Sandals • Esty | Purse • Urban Outfitters | Kimono Top • Asos | Jeans • H&M |
Booties • DSW (similar)

I realized that I never reported back with the two pieces that I bought from ASOS that I included in my year-long capsule. I included them without actually having tried them on yet but I had faith in their worthiness 😉 They arrived in the mail about a week and a half ago and I tried them and took a couple of quick pictures. The T-shirt dress is the perfect length for me since I am short. I was worried that it was going to be to big and baggy on my frame but it works out nice. The kimono top is light, breezy and drapes well. They are good purchases that will get a lot of use so I am happy. They both look good with my leather jacket as well which is a necessary criteria for me.

  1. I am looking for an online Astronomy course that I can take with my 11-year-old. I am more interested in the classical astronomy of the study of stars because I think it will be more interesting for her at this time since she likes ancient Greeks. I am also looking for a decent but not super expensive telescope as well so if you have any suggestions for either I would greatly appreciate to hear it.
  2. I am also looking for a smoking slipper possibly in a leopard print. I am open to other cool prints/colours, but I am having no luck with something that doesn’t cost $500+ that I actually like. I am looking for a pair like thisthis, or this minus the hefty price tag (they remind me of 18th century Marie Antoinette fashion which I kind of love). I actually like these ones too since I am a sucker for yellow and the price isn’t super atrocious although I would rather not have to pay it 😉
  3. I have stayed up way too late lately reading every night. I drag my ass during the day but night-time seems to give me a second wind. I wish that I could switch this around though because I need to amplify my day-to-day productivity. This means I need to go to bed earlier which means that it will cut in to my quiet reading time which gives me the sads. The book that has kept me up for the last week chronicles the history of hygiene and is called The Dirt on Clean: An Unsanitized History by Katherine Ashenburg . I’ve actually read it before but it was a long time ago so it is like reading it for the first time. I am all over the place in my book tastes but I really like being immersed in another time (preferably medieval) either fiction or no fiction where you can almost smell what it would have been like. Gross but I enjoy that much descriptive detail.
  4. When I posted My Year Long Capsule Wardrobe list, it was for as it stands at the moment. I admitted that there were some holes that need filling and would be filled as I found the pieces. One of those holes was for a striped long sleeve. I wanted one that was looser fit than the usual ones that I see and came across this boxy one at Everlane. I ordered it last week and it should arrive some time this week (if the customs people cooperate). I plan on updating my capsule collage as I get new pieces.
  5. I don’t know if you have paid attention to the issues I have had with finding a pair of boyfriend jeans. I posted my issues on Instagram and the responses I got made me realize that a lot of us are having these same issues. “The struggle is REAL” is a common response that I got. I found a pair (and they are currently on sale for $47) from Gap that actually worked that I will be taking some pictures of today or tomorrow. They are a slimmer girlfriend style but that seems to work better on my body than the baggier boyfriend cut. I will make a post about them soon.

Does anyone else have a love/hate relationship with boyfriend jeans?

Reading is one of the first things that I actively seek when I have some down time. That usually is between the hours of 11pm and 2am because if I try to stop and read during the day there is usually so much chaos going around that I end up reading the same page 10 times before I quit so it is pointless.

1. I downloaded the Kindle app to my 11 year olds iPad to cut down on the amount of book in the house. Honestly tons of books is a good thing but when they are taking over and you have no place to put them then reading an e-book sometimes is a better option (unless of course your truly love the book and want a physical copy). When I downloaded the app I warned her not to make any purchases without permission because it’s pretty easy to buy something with one-click. I did all that before bed, downloaded her the first book in the Chronicles of Prydain series and then settled down in to bed myself. Not 15 minutes later I get an email notification thanking me for signing up for Kindle Unlimited. So I went in the room where she said it “accidentally” happened. Since you get a free month trial I thought I might as well give it a shot so I searched out a book that was recommended based on my interests to see if it was available and it was so I “borrowed” it. I’m almost done and if you like historical fiction, specifically the medieval Mystery genre than I recommend the book The Colour of Poison: A Sebastian Foxley Medieval Mystery by Toni Mount. I am really enjoying it. Continue Reading
