With the Outlander season finale on Sunday we have officially entered droughtlander time 🙁 I can’t wait until next season. I wish Sherlock had a new season starting in the new year. There aren’t very many shows that I look forward to, but both of those rank at the top.
I got some really great things from Value Village this past week. The red Adidas and Green New Balances above were scored while looking for winter boots. A little bit of a sidetrack but they are very festive aren’t they? 😉 I also got some pretty good shirts too that you will see over the next week or so.
Today is Green Monday. In my naive self I assumed that Green Monday had something to do with shopping ethically or buying environmentally friendly gifts from ethical shops. Not even close. It’s actually the busiest day of shopping in December because it is the last day that most businesses offer guaranteed delivery before Christmas (although that is changing with new shipping options becoming available). I assume the green represents the colour of money :/ So if need to get some online shopping done then Monday is probably a good day to do it because a) there are a lot of sales to encourage buyers, and b) your items will be guaranteed to arrive on time.
Did you get a chance to read my Aimee Kestenberg Bag review that I posted on Saturday night? If you didn’t and you have a Canadian address head over there and enter the giveaway to win the chestnut bag shown there plus a $25 gift card to TSC. The contest closes this Friday. Good luck!

I have decided this week is all about catching up on the shit that I had fallen behind in. Tom is done work for the holidays this Friday which means that he will be home ongoing until the new year. Not to point any fingers but I swear to god the house gets a million times messier when he is home so my intention is to get it in good working order for the holidays. I have also warned the girls that they need to get their stuff figured out in their room or else there will not be any room for Christmas stuff. I bought a lot of things that will add to their collections so they need to get their shelves into a neat organized manner to make room. It’s like spring cleaning in December.
I also want to get this blog in better working order. I think it is probably time for a new look/template but I have been scared of doing it because a) change scares me a bit, and b) I am terrified that I am totally going to mess up everything and will have no idea how to fix it. I am nowhere near wealthy enough to be able to afford someone to do this for me, nor for someone to fix it if I eff it up. So I am entirely on my own and while I am pretty technology literate I am by no means to the level of web design, or knowing why something may not be working. So I am on the lookout for a new blog look. I will probably shop at Pipdig because I have seen and liked a lot of their designs on bloggers that I have read, and they are very affordable. I mean who has the money to drop a few thousand on their fashion blog (I know lots of people do but why would you want to)? When I will do this I haven’t decided yet 😉
Were you able to find any good deals over the past couple of weeks? There was a lot going on and it was borderline overwhelming. Honestly, this holiday season inspired me to unsubscribe from a lot of business emails. I’m cleaning out hundreds every day and that is just in my day-to-day email. My email address that I generally use to sign up for things (my “junk” one) has of 10,000 unread emails and I cringe at the thought of going through and cleaning that out. I guess that will be part of my blog working order/organization deal that I am planning.
Also part of that is growing my audience and since Pinterest is one of my biggest traffic generators I am focusing a chunk of my time on that. I recently found Tailwind which is making it easier. I also set up a Tailwind Tribe to get some like-minded people together to share each other’s posts which will extend our audiences to people that generally wouldn’t see our stuff. The gist behind them is simple, you share your post within the tribe page and then share one or more of someone else’s in the tribe queue. It’s a give and take thing and will only work if you give more that you take. Right now I am trying to get the ball rolling with it, but I am having some issues with a few people who are just sharing their own and no one else’s which defeats the purpose. So if you are looking to grow your Pinterest or blog and want to join a tailwind tribe you can join mine with this invite (it’s usually a request to join, but the invite should take you right in). Join if you are interested and I look forward to seeing you there.
P.S. Don’t forget to read the rules, they are pretty straightforward 😉
On Friday my oldest became a teenager. It’s so crazy how fast time flies. It always sounds like a cliché when people say but it’s true and it makes me sad. I really need to start forcing her to take more pictures. That sound bad, but my heart breaks at the huge gaps I have in between photographs of her. She hates taking them but I need them. It’s important to me and I think one day she will like being able to look back on the times in her life. She didn’t ask for much or want to do much for her birthday but did ask for me to try to make the cake that Hagrid made Harry in The Philosopher’s Stone. I think I did okay with my reproduction of it since it’s supposed to look like a slightly botched job 😉
I missed my Weekly Reads and Finds post from Saturday because we were out celebrating her birthday and I took a small social media break this weekend, (and I already flooded you with posts through the week so I figure you would appreciate not hearing from me 😉 So this is a sort of combination of the two posts.
Weekly Reads (and maybe videos):
If you are spastic cook like me and are always second guessing yourself with measurements when reducing a recipe size then I have a site for you. If you copy and paste your ingredients for a recipe into the box on this page and then pick what size you want to reduce to it will give you the measurements kind of like Google Translate works within the box beside. I totally have this bookmarked because I always changing recipe sizes, but it also will multiply recipes and give you alternative instructions when you have a different pan size.
I really love any video that puts in to perspective the timeline of the earth and how in the grand scheme were are just a tiny blip on the radar (although we have done tremendous damage in our short time). It’s so interesting to see how the Ancient Egyptians are closer to the time of the Tyrannosaurus Rex than T-Rex is to the earth’s beginning. Mind boggling. It also makes me shake my head when I see the flat earth movement becoming more prevalent like this guy. The best comments about the flat earth video, “If the earth really was flat, cats would have pushed everything off the edge a long time ago.”, and “I don’t believe in science”….says the man launching himself skyward using a boatload of science…..” sometimes the comment section makes me lose faith in humanity and then sometimes it is filled with gems like this that restore it.
When you see it broken down like this you really do realize how The Neverending Story was Bleak AF. I still think about Atreyu and Artax dying with the immense sadness I felt at around 6 years old.
Amazon will once again be having deals all day that change-up every few hours so if there is something you are looking for in particular you need to pay attention. You can find great deals on technology, cookware, and even magazine subscriptions.
Topshop is still running an up to 50% off plus free shipping to round off the sale weekend. These sock boots are like the ones I bought from Topshop last year (but have a slightly larger heel) and are on sale. A pretty fab peplum blazer for a great deal (limited sizes left), a sweatshirt with a fun accent, and the classic trench.
J.Crew is still 40% off but with an additional 10% off until noon Monday with the code SHOPFAST. Also with free shipping so get on it and shop fast because there are some pretty great things on sale. My friend has been debating this coat since the sale started. I’m in the market for winter boots and these look cute and hardy.
Urban Outfitters is $50 off purchases $150 or more, and $15 off of $75 or more. I always find things I love here in both home and clothing. It’s one of my favourite stores to wander around and it totally reminds me of how I used to dress in 1994/95. Maybe that’s why I like it 😉 This cardigan looks like my oversized cardigan that I have (and love) from Zara that is sold out. An embroidered sweater that’s beautiful (and also looks like a Zara one that I have), some fun stocking stuffers, and an ornament that Merle would love and would use all year-long.
And I just got this email two seconds before I hit publish so I thought I would squeeze it in her. H&M is 30% off everything with free shipping using code 5038.
I’m kind of flying by the seat of my pants this holiday season so bear with me. The blog may seem all out of whack this week with me trying to get out as many of the holiday posts that I have, so regular posts may be on different days or skipped entirely this week so you aren’t bombarded with 75 posts in 5 days :/ I actually wish that I had 75 posts sitting there ready but as usual I have all kinds of ideas and will probably finish them all 5 minutes before posting. Way to add stress to yourself Sara. It’s impossible to quietly sit at my computer for any given time without constant interruptions because
we live in a 650 sq ft apartment so we are in each others face all day.
I homeschool the kids so I don’t have the regular school hours to get stuff done.
Merle can’t whisper for shit. I literally got her hearing checked at her last well check because she is so loud that I thought she may have hearing problems.
she is also a super momma’s girl and does not like me to be too far from her peripheral vision. She has her “desk” set up about two feet from where I sit right at the edge of my desk, so she sits beside me and crafts and chats while I “work”.
I swear they never sleep, so getting things down when they go to bed also doesn’t work well. I think I may have to start getting up at 5 because they definitely don’t like to get up once they are actually sleeping.
So I am getting this out on Sunday night in anticipation to getting something out for tomorrow too. It’s Tom’s birthday today, he’s the big 40 and none too happy about it. He sat around today moping and listening to his Kiss records we bought him and now we are eating a really good cake from Whole Foods. If you get a chance to try their Black Tie cake do it. It’s really good.
Ok, so although Black Friday is technically this Friday, everyone seems to be jumping on the “earlier the better” bandwagon and have released deals already. If you head over to many of your favourite retailers they are having early deals or Pre Black Friday countdowns so you may be able to find some good stuff before Friday and risk it selling out.
H&M has up to 60% off tops today. They also have 20% off $60 + free shipping with code 6793. Tomorrow will be a different deal but for the next 7.5 hours you can find some good shirts on sale.
Old Navy currently has a pre sale offering 40% off entire purchase with discount taken off a cash (it’s 50% off for card members). I think this deal ends tonight, but it’s a good one. This faux fur coat is $35! Or a velvet blazer for $25 and this colour is gorgeous.
Gap is having 45% off with the code GIFT where you can find a faux fur scarf, a cute striped sweater, and I really like this fur lined parka. It’s the perfect time to get a winter coat for you or the kids. I’m fairly certain this was the exact deal that I bought Merle’s winter coat from last year.
I hope the season’s stress isn’t getting to you and that you have a great week!
Do you know what feels good? To finally get rid of the pile of donation crap that has sat in the front hall area (as well as other places). The pile kept getting bigger and bigger and for some reason in this house, people seem to think that any empty surface is a open drop off spot to stack shit. Mail, clothes, toys……they way they think tidying is done is to pick up the item from the floor and place it on an elevated surface. It drives me insane, so I am exceedingly happy that my old computer desk has now vacated the premises because it was a magnet for clutter. Does anyone else suffer from the empty surface = clutter magnet affliction?
It got really cold on Friday and we had to bust out the winter coats 🙁 I can’t believe we had to do that already. Last year I didn’t even have to wear until almost February and then I only had to wear it around 5 times that season. My coat is really heavy when it’s on. I like the look of it (it almost looks like and army style parka) but the weight of it sucks, it feels like a weighted exercise vest. It would be nice to get a less heavy model, and maybe a faux fur coat for the season but I will survive with this one without either at the moment 😉 Both the girls winter coats still fit thankfully, but they will definitely won’t next year. We were able to get Merle’s from Gap when they had a 40% off sale (they always have these sales so pay attention to emails and the website). It was from the boys section because she liked the green and the girls only had “girly” colours. It looks like they have the exact same coat this season to (it also comes in Burgundy, navy, and black). It’s a really nice coat, and really warm so it was a good choice.
The Christmas tree is up! We ended up putting it up on Friday night, and since it was put in a new spot this year it looks so much better. We also discovered that the wall socket it is plugged it to is control by a light switch that we had no idea what it turned on (cue Friends mysterious light switch episode). Seriously, we have lived here for several years and could never figure it out, but now we don’t have to unplug the lights to turn them off.
Have I mentioned that my kids are weird and have a life-size skeleton in their room? His name is Fred. And while Tom was at Value Village today he found a smaller version (It looks like a medical school one because it is really detailed) so he bought it. He needed a little repair job but Tom fixed him and Merle named him Bilbo Baggins (I’m reading The Hobbit to her). He will fit in perfect with Fred, and the cat and bird skeletons that are on her shelf. Next she wants a real animal skull to add to the collection. It’s turning in to a real life apothecary shop in that room, which is funny because Roo’s dream occupation is an alchemist 😉
Did you see that I posted a Christmas gift guide for kids on Friday? I tried to give some versatile options because if I focused too much on my kids tastes it would have been filled with weird and creepy stuff. Have you ever seen the show Oddities? That reflects their tastes well (mine too). We love that show and really want to go shopping there to add to our collections. Top on my list is a 19th century vampire fighting/killing kit (if they can authentic one properly).
