Weekly Reads and Finds

Happy New Year! I’m not doing the whole resolution thing this year. I never seem to follow through with them 90% of the time anyway so I am not going to waste my time.

Although I do plan on making some better choices this year regarding my eating and exercising habits.

If this year made me realize one thing it was that I really need to focus on living a healthier lifestyle. I was skating by for years based on being able to get out and walk everywhere all the time.

This year I was much more sedentary and it is starting to take it’s toll physically and mentally.

I’m not 100% sure what the plan will be yet. I downloaded the FitOn app when it was offered for free this year. It might actually still be free, it does have a paid portion though.

I also love Fitness Blender.

As for eating habits, that is where I am stuck. As obnoxious as it may sound, I have never had to watch what I am eating or go on a diet.

And although I consider myself lucky, It also instilled a lot of bad habits that are really hard to break at my age, as well as not given me the tools I need for making better food choices.

It’s kind of ridiculous that I am just figuring this out at my age, but I am starting from scratch.

So if you have any good guide for beginners please let me know…that made me cringe to even type that.

Here is to a MUCH better year.

Stay safe.

  1. I have never had to watch my diet either until this year. I have just started using Noom and really like it. I like that they have an option to break out your food choices by green (great), yellow (moderate) and red choices (limit choices).

    • I always get ads for Noom (which is probably a sign 😂) so I’ll go check it out. Thank you for reminding me about it. I used to use My Fitness Pal a million years ago but I never really kept to it long enough to see if it worked. I’m very inconsistent and I need to break that habit. Thank so much! – Sara

  2. What you did before worked for you, so nothing wrong with that. Now you just to adjust because life is different. I’m finding at 48 and being much more sedentary while working this year that I just need to move more, and exercise a little more caution, like older French women do, about what I indulge in. For me, I love cheese, but can pass on dessert. Since you don’t do well with hard and fast resolutions, like many, what about a gentle, “More more”?

    • Thanks for reminding me of that. It’s easy to lose the big picture and how all the small changes up up. I read a book a quite a few years ago about the choices French women make and it resonates more with me than strict diet and exercise. I can’t do that, or at least I can’t maintain it. I need to be kinder to myself. Thank you.

  3. my husband and i have been talking a lot more about our diet and fitness, both of which need a kick up the backside. we both acknowledge that we’re not getting in nearly as many steps a day compared to what we would do if we were still in the office, as well as something simple like how much water we are (or aren’t) drinking. the problem for us is: i am pescatarian and he’s done a keto diet in the past, so he thinks that will be best for him. so trying to work with those types of restrictions without feeling like you’re preparing two completely separate meals is a job in itself. i was taking a look at nerdfitness because it sounded a lot less pretentious than other systems. everyone is different, and what i was telling my husband is that maybe something that worked for your lifestyle and whatnot back in the day may not be what works now, so be open to whatever. maybe try and start with small changes; either portion size or swapping one thing that’s super good taste-wise (but actually super bad nutrition-wise) for a healthier option? regardless, it’s a bummer. i hate looking at old pictures and not realizing how easy i had it back then!

    • Ugh. I hear you on the different eating thing. I always feel like I’m cooking several different meals and by the time dinner comes often say fuck it and order take out. My husbands working from home will now involve a few days solo at his office. It’s too loud here for business calls, plus he’s too loud and disruptive for schooling and me doing my stuff. It will be a nice break and might help me feel less overwhelmed and constantly surrounded so I can get some actual time for bits of fitness. I need to do a big order for healthy snack choices. I think snacking is what bites me in the ass more often. There has been a lot of cake and sweets lately 😞 I think in my early 20s I was actually heavier than I am now (a lot of beer 😂) but I carried it a lot better then so it was never a noticeable issue. Now I both see it and feel it.
