It snowed today, a lot, so I hibernated. Between the sun and above-zero temps tomorrow and the upcoming rain, it will be gone quickly, but I am pretty cold right now and burrowed under blankets.
I promised the girls that we would upgrade some of the Christmas and house decor this year. First on the list was supposed to be a tree.
We have had our fake tree for about 11 years now, and it is looking more and more like Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree every year.
Every year when it comes out of the box it looks more sparse and crooked, but once it is decorated, it actually looks a lot better, so maybe it can wait another year because I would like to focus on other areas of upgrade.
And while I was doing that, of course, I started looking for household upgrades, not Christmas-related, because some of our stuff is pretty dire.
My desk chair has been scratched so many times by the cats (actually just the big guy) that I highly suggest that you don’t look at the back of it if you have any form of trypophobia.
It’s pretty gross.
I came across this one and I love the shape and colour. I am not a minimalist or neutral colour home person at all, and I like to mix vintage, modern, and cartoony style furniture, so this chair would fit in.
Our living room has a set of windows that are on a wall in an octagonal shape, so hanging curtains is not going to happen.
They just won’t work as there is no place to attach them, and the ceiling is concrete.
But, our balcony door and its side windows have this sort of area that is blocked off by the heating duct, and we could actually put up some curtains across those windows pretty easily.
I’m not sure why I haven’t thought about that, because it would be a nice way to add some colour.
Originally, I wanted some dark blue velvet, but then I started thinking about how bad that would be with a grey cat who sheds a lot.
So maybe a green set instead? It won’t be as noticeable. They are also 22% off and less expensive than a similar pair I was going to buy a couple of months ago.
I’m going to go through them a bit more because some of the stuff is up to 70% off.
Green is the favourite colour of every person who lives here, which is actually pretty weird that we are all in agreement. That never happens.
Two like green in general, while the other two (me and the youngest) like olive/chartreuse/70s green the best, so I can green up the house and no one would complain.
Which then brings me to this chair. I love how it folds out to make lounging more comfortable, and we do a lot of lounging and gaming here.
I don’t like all the furniture to have a structured shape. Things like large bean bag style seating, as well as papasan chairs are right up our alley.
It’s more about comfort.
I also like to think about whether the cats would like it, which is an important criterion as well.
Because who wants a chair if the cats hate it? Not that it would make a difference though, because they are currently fighting over the same cat bed when there are literally 8 different spots for them to sleep in this room alone.
Sigh, the drama.
I used to have a long mirror that had an olive green frame. It was from the 70s, and it was with me for years and years, through many moves.
And then a few years ago, it fell over somehow and smashed, and I was so bummed.
You know, when something breaks and can’t be replaced, and it just makes you really sad? That is how I felt about that.
Which is a bit of an overreaction to a mirror, but it was THE mirror. The one I stood in front of to check my outfits from ages 15 to 38. That mirror saw a lot of shit.
Anyway, now this mirror has a chokehold on me. It is not the same, but might even be better.
It has a Dr Seuss/Grinch feel to it, and I have an old gift card to Wayfair Canada that I have been meaning to use, and I can’t decide if I should buy myself a mirror, or use it to get the girls something for Christmas or their upcoming birthdays, since they both want bedroom things.
Ugh. The guilty dilemma of being a parent and spending money on yourself.
Speaking of the Grinch, I found this tree ornament at Simons. It reminds me of the image of the Grinch’s heart.
FYI, Simons always has fantastic seasonal decorations. Like these metal cat ornaments, too, that I might have bought along with the heart, rainbow felt garland, a faux fur blanket, a pillow, and some lights for the girls’ rooms.
We really like blankets here. I prefer to keep the heat lower and dress up cozy and use blankets. There are always stacks of them ready to be used.
And while I might have picked up a bit of decor, I did not, in fact, buy any new or secondhand/vintage clothes this week.
I’ve got a few more loads of laundry to finish before bed, so I am off, but I rounded up the decor pieces that I was talking about above because seeing things together is easier than just writing about them.
They are linked underneath.
Try to have a good week.
Edit to add: I just went through and found a pair of Ralph Lauren velvet curtains in blue that I originally wanted for a deep discount, and there is an open box option for $36. Damn. They look so luxe.
I didn’t know they had open box items, and I have no issues with buying that. Sara the bargain hunter.
I am going to have to make up my mind asap because I already missed the open box option on the mirror.
3:30 am online shopping fomo is not a good look for me. I apologize. I am going to bed now.

Have you ever done a how-to guide to buying vintage denim? All your jeans look awesome, but buying vintage jeans is SO hard online, esp if you want men’s styles and have a woman’s body (so many new jeans I try on are either loose in the waist/fit in the hips or fit in the waist and too tight in the hips/butt). What measurements and styles do you look for? I had a great pair of 505s that don’t fit anymore. I feel like you would do a great guide!
