A lot of you resonated with the post last week on working through my friend’s wardrobe to help her find her way back into her personal style.
It was fun and a bit of a new way of going about the weekly wardrobes, so I figured I would try a few new spins on them over the next few weeks before jumping into fall.
Yes, fall. Do I hear you cheering along with me?
I can’t wait, because it is brutally hot this summer. Now on to the wardrobe.
This one’s for the daydreamers, the rule-breakers, the “I thrifted this in 2009 and still wear it” types, (hi, it’s me).
It’s summer style for people who find capsule wardrobes a little…rigid.
It’s for those who love texture, imperfection, and a bit of chaos, but still want to feel pulled-together without trying too hard.
There’s something magical about the wardrobes of creative people.
You know the type, the person who throws on mismatched patterns, vintage trousers, and a clay pendant necklace and somehow looks perfectly themselves.
The person who always has a tote bag with a random sticker on it and a pair of sunglasses that they definitely didn’t buy in a mall.
This summer’s capsule wardrobe is inspired by that energy. The kind of style that feels like a heatwave hit an art school.
Let’s call it Eclectic and Effortless, because it’s both.
It’s not curated to death or dictated by trend cycles. It’s not worried about beige-on-beige or following capsule “rules.”
Instead, it’s personal, layered, textural, and a little off-kilter, in the best way.
This one’s for the rule-breakers. The thrifters. The colour lovers and fabric feelers. The “maybe I’ll wear it as a skirt or a top” thinkers.
Sound like you? Keep reading.

What Is an “Art School Summer” Look?
It’s the style equivalent of using your hands to eat cherries on the fire escape. Of walking into a museum just to feel the air conditioning.
Of grabbing an iced coffee while wearing clothes that still have oil paint or a rip you refuse to mend. In other words, it’s personal, nostalgic, and always a little improvised.
It’s:
- A vintage poplin shirt thrown over a swimsuit.
- Worn-in clogs with socks in July because why not.
- A graphic tee under a silky slip dress.
- Handmade jewellery, maybe made by you.
- Textures over trends. Story over polish.
This aesthetic thrives on contradiction. It’s where effortlessness meets maximalist touches, and where a piece doesn’t have to “go with” anything, as long as it goes with you.
The Eclectic Summer Capsule Wardrobe Checklist
Forget strict numbers or neutral palettes. Instead, this capsule is about categories. Loose enough to invite creativity, structured enough to keep your closet from becoming a pile of “maybes.”
Tops:
1-2 vintage men’s button-downs: for layering, knotting, letting hang open, or wearing as a dress.
1 weird/fun tank top: graphic, ribbed, or asymmetrical, bonus points if thrifted.
1 oversized tee: band, movie, or completely abstract.
Bottoms:
1 midi or maxi skirt: printed or textured, that isn’t too precious. Plissé, patchwork, or silk.
1 pair of flowy or painter-style trousers: cargo, linen, or vintage Dickies.
1 denim piece: preferably worn-in, raw-hemmed, paint-splattered, or patched.
Dresses & Layers:
1 slip dress or sundress: wearable over a tee or alone.
1 statement vest or waistcoat: velvet, embroidered, or linen.
1 light jacket: think chore coat, denim, or oversized utility.
Footwear:
Clogs: Swedish Hasbeens, Crocs (yes), or vintage wood soles.
Old sneakers or Converse: mismatched laces encouraged.
One “statement” shoe: chunky sandal, metallic boot, or Mary Jane.
Accessories:
1 large tote bag: bonus if it has paint stains or text.
1 unexpected purse: maybe shaped like a fish. Maybe furry. I liked the one with the rabbit a lot. I actually can’t stop thinking about it.
Sunglasses: the weirder the better.
Layered jewellery: think shell necklaces, keys on chains, friendship bracelets.
How to Style It
Mix eras: 90s tank, 70s pants, 2000s bag? Perfect.
Don’t match too hard: Let it feel loose. Summer isn’t about control, it’s about expression.
Play with texture: linen, raw silk, cotton gauze, and denim all live happily together.
DIY touches: patching, dyeing, cutting off hems. Lean into your inner art student.

Where to Shop the Look (Without Selling Your Soul)
The best part of this wardrobe? Almost all of it can be sourced secondhand or made by hand.
Thrift stores: Look for men’s button-downs, weird pants, and handmade jewellery.
Etsy: Great for one-of-a-kind accessories, vintage skirts, and upcycled vests.
Depop/Poshmark: Filter by material or aesthetic: “gauze,” “plissé,” “artsy.”
Local craft fairs or art school sales: Yes, really. Jewellery, bags, and textiles here are often cheap and full of soul.
DIY: Cut off the sleeves. Sew a patch. Dye it. Scribble on your canvas bag. This look loves imperfection.

This is really fun! I’m surprised how much I like the scarf. If you wear the scarf and the boat shoes, I feel like it doesn’t matter what you wear in between them, its going to look really good!
I agree. They can instantly make any outfit. Especially in summer when you wear less and feel less creative.
love everything about this!!
Thanks Laura! It was fun to put together.
Hey Sara,
I’ve been following for years. Just love what you do. But have to admit, my style got stuck with what you wore like 10 years ago. I love my vintage pieces, totes, indian accessoires, chucks, jumpsuits, bandshirts,… Thats probably why I love this post so much! Thank you!! Greetings from Germany
Thanks Silvi! I appreciate hearing that. I feel like my style shifted a bit during Covid with some perimenopause weight gain and trying to feel comfortable in my body again. I also started to really want to transition my wardrobe to predominantly secondhand/vintage so it’s been like a bit of fun discovery with what I want as longterm, forever types of pieces. I still very much love my band tees though and have added a few new ones recently. Thanks for sticking around so long. – Sara
