This week, I was having a tough time putting this together because I kept changing my mind, and my focus would shift in another direction.
Maybe it is the season, or what is going on in the world, and maybe it is also how I am viewing my own wardrobe but there is a literal and figurative change in the air.
This morning I looked out the window that I look out every day, and noticed that the tree down there is full of leaf buds ready to open.
I swear that it was not like that two days ago.
It was like the heaviness of this winter lifted a bit and things began to change in my brain.
The current unpredictable state of the world is scary and people are starting to panic and pull back.
Frivolous and unnecessary spending is being harnessed due to financial uncertainty and it is really making me appreciate that I have been slowly building the forever wardrobe.
Something built for the long haul with a focus on personal style, and what I love.
There was a time that I was so focused on the trend cycle that I lost focus on what my long-term goals were.
It was about staying on top of the newest trends, and I would often find that once I wore that new trendy piece, it lost its lustre and by the next wearing it felt dated.
So much money was wasted when I had this mindset and it has really reshaped my thought process and helped me figure what pieces are my tried and true long-haul pieces.
The ones that never feel like they are old or dated because they don’t fit into that trend box and are hard to pinpoint when they are from.
For example, skinny jeans, although on their way back are very easy to place from a specific time in fashion.
A straight leg has been available in varying iterations for decades.
So for this wardrobe, I am focusing on the tried and true pieces and styles that are being worn season after season, year after year.
BUT, it is okay to sprinkle in some trends if you want to level up. It is a good way to keep things fresh and interesting.
The trend to everyday pieces ratio should never be more than 80/20. Always aim for less than 20% of your wardrobe to be trend-focused.
So let’s jump in.

The Spring Capsule Wardrobe: A Modern, Intentional Reset
That is where my mind is right now, a wardrobe reset.
Because there is something about early spring that makes our closets feel sort of restless if that makes sense.
It’s not just the weather, it’s us. We’ve been bundled and buried for months, and suddenly we’re craving lightness.
And even though I much prefer winter to summer, I find myself looking forward to packing away my winter coats this year.
I also find that we accumulate a lot of stuff over the winter. It is inevitable.
Which can often bring us to standing in front of our overstuffed wardrobe thinking we have nothing to wear, because more clothes don’t mean more style.
A lesson we seem to have to learn more than once in our life.
This season, let’s reframe the narrative.
Instead of chasing spring trends that are burning brighter and faster than before, we’re building a capsule wardrobe that lasts.
Not just through the season, but for seasons to come.
We’re talking longevity, not just in wear, but in energy.
These are the pieces you’ll reach for instinctively because they fit, they function, and they feel like you.
But make no mistake: this isn’t about playing it safe. Minimal doesn’t mean boring.
When done right, it’s quiet confidence. A clean silhouette with a hit of edge.
A timeless trench paired with sculptural earrings. A crisp white tee under a statement leather jacket.
It’s modern. It’s a little unexpected. And it’s all the more powerful because it’s yours.
Capsule 101: The Philosophy Behind the Edit
A capsule wardrobe isn’t about restriction, it’s about freedom. When you know every piece in your closet works with the others, getting dressed becomes intuitive.
You invest in fewer items, but better ones.
And you stop buying for the life you think you want and start dressing for the one you actually live.
The goal here isn’t perfection. It’s longevity, versatility, and personal resonance.
Look for fabrics that wear well (cotton poplin, denim, leather, linen blends), silhouettes that hold shape, and details that elevate without dominating.
A little edge goes a long way.
My Long-Haul 10: Spring Staples with Staying Power
Here’s where form meets function. These are the ten pieces that I think can anchor your spring style and adapt to however your mood shifts.
These are the details that bring your wardrobe to life: modern shapes, vintage textures, and pieces that blur the line between classic and cool.
A Vintage Tee – Not just a basic, this is your personality piece. Faded black band tee, sun-softened 90s logo, or a perfectly worn-in collegiate crew.
The right vintage tee speaks volumes. It’s the ultimate high-low hero, just as at home under a structured blazer as it is with denim and sandals.
Look for one with an interesting cut or distressing that tells a story. The goal isn’t pristine, it’s patina.
It’s kind of like the same philosophy that I apply to handbags.
Tailored Trousers – Not just for the office. The right pair of trousers can redefine your whole wardrobe.
Look for a high-rise with a clean waistband, and a cut that skims the body without clinging.
A wide leg in a drapey fabric feels current and quietly luxe. A slim, ankle-grazing pair looks great with boots or slides.
Let the shape do the talking.
A Statement Coat – This is where restraint meets drama. A bold cut, unexpected silhouette, or unusual texture.
Think sculptural shoulders, a pop of colour in a sea of neutrals, or a painterly print. Choose something you’ll love to throw over everything, whether it’s jeans and sneakers or a slip dress.
It should feel like you, not like you’re trying. A good statement coat makes everything underneath look intentional.
A Button-Down Shirt – People might think it is boring, but this one is a shapeshifter. Tucked, tied, layered, or left open like a jacket, the button-down shirt is your spring MVP.
Opt for one with a slightly oversized fit, dropped shoulders, or an extended cuff.
Go classic in white or blue poplin, or bring in texture with stripes, washed black, or subtle embroidery.
Wear it with denim and boots for a borrowed-from-the-boys look, or tie it at the waist over your midi skirt and call it a day.
Vintage Denim – The holy grail of any capsule wardrobe. There’s nothing quite like the structure, fade, and feel of vintage denim.
Whether it’s a pair of high-rise Levi’s 501s or perfectly broken-in Wranglers, they give effortless shape to every look.
Slightly relaxed, cropped or stacked just so at the ankle. They age with you, and only get better with time.
I find that I am embracing distressing for spring and summer. Nothing feels quite as right as a pair of loose-fitting, light-wash, distressed jeans in spring. It just works.
A Leather Jacket – This might be your statement jacket, maybe not. It depends on your style and the direction you want your wardrobe to take. But it will be your edge piece.
If you can find one that fits just right, hold onto it forever.
The vintage leather jacket has soul. It’s worn-in but not worn-out.
Cropped or boxy, oversized or shrunken, the key is to balance the structure of leather with movement in the rest of your outfit.
Throw it over a soft midi skirt or pair it with relaxed trousers and sneakers. The contrast is the point.
Bonus: the more you wear it, the better it gets.
A Cashmere Sweater or Cardigan – Softness with staying power. A good-quality cashmere piece is a quiet luxury, not showy, just sublimely wearable.
Choose one in a neutral or statement colour. Neon yellow? That would be fun.
Wear it to soften leather, offset denim, or throw over your slip dress on cool evenings.
Go for classic cuts: a crewneck, a v-neck, or a longline cardigan with deep pockets.
A One and Done Dress – This is your easy answer for days when you want to look pulled together with zero effort.
Think of it as your uniform in disguise.
Whether it’s a crisp poplin shirt dress, a ribbed knit midi, or a linen wrap with a subtle structure, it should move with you, layer easily, and work with boots or sandals, depending on the mood.
It’s not fussy, but it always looks considered.
A Midi Skirt – A simple silhouette, but with a twist, literally or otherwise. This isn’t your average flowy floral number.
Look for texture (washed silk, cotton twill, buttery vegan leather), or structure (pleats, wrap fronts, asymmetric hems).
It’s a great way to add visual interest to your basics, and pairs effortlessly with knits, tees, or a crisp shirt tied at the waist.
I just found a cocoon-style black midi skirt at a secondhand shop. It is a Jacquemus skirt from their 2017 ready-to-wear runway piece and I got it discounted to $70.
It has that kind of sculptural, futuristic shape that can’t really be dated.
Modern Footwear – Forget dainty ballet flats and predictable Chelsea boots, the modern shoe is about shape and edge.
Look for flats with architectural details: square toes, low sculptural heels, woven leather, or an unexpected colour in an otherwise neutral wardrobe.
I bought the deer print, sculptural heels. They are by Maguire which is a Canadian brand (my blue boots, and red heels are from there), and most sizes are currently on preorder due to selling out.
They are also available at Nordstrom but are going fast.
Ankle boots should feel directional but practical, think pointy or square toes, kitten heels, or moto-inspired zips.
These shoes don’t shout. They just shift the whole look forward.
Statement Bag – A statement bag doesn’t need to be oversized, logo-heavy, or trendy. It just needs to feel like a signature.
Maybe it’s the vintage crossbody in glossy oxblood leather. Maybe it’s a clean, minimal bucket bag in an unexpected hue (chartreuse, ivory, inky blue).
It should add interest to your outfits without competing, think of it as punctuation, not decoration.
Bonus points if it works for both weekday errands and after-dark plans.
It should spark joy, not scream trend.
Unexpected Accessory – This is where the capsule gets personal. The piece that makes people look twice.
A pair of vintage aviators with yellow lenses. A slim belt with a sculptural buckle.
Maybe it’s an oversized resin cuff or a thin silk scarf tied like a bandana.
The key? It shouldn’t feel like “fashion.” It should feel like you.
These are the kinds of pieces you find in a flea market, or are passed down, or get picked up on a trip.
Let them break up the clean lines.
Care Over Consumption: Style Tips for the Long Haul
Lean on outfit formulas: White tee + trousers + jacket. Slip dress + sweater + boots. Play with swaps, not overhauls.
Tailor your investment: Literally. A $20 tee that fits just right is more valuable than a $200 blazer that doesn’t.
Maintain your pieces: Wash less. Air dry more. Use a steamer. Invest in a good lint brush and a sweater comb.
I have cats, so a good lint brush is literally in my handbag at all times.
Shop secondhand or vintage: You’ll often find better quality and more character than anything new off the rack.
Let your wardrobe evolve slowly: You don’t need to replace everything in one season. Build piece by piece, story by story.
In the end, building a spring capsule wardrobe isn’t about sticking to rules or hitting some minimalist quota.
It’s about curating a closet that feels like home. One that works harder, lasts longer and reflects who you are beneath the trends.
When you start with thoughtful pieces that bring both ease and energy, you make room for creativity.
You make room for you.
And with each season, as your style shifts and your life evolves, these clothes evolve with you.
They’re not just what you wear, they’re what you return to. Over and over again.
