A while back I did a question box on Instagram asking people what their style adjectives were to inspire me for upcoming capsules.
I have dipped into those ideas for some of my hybrid capsules because a lot of you felt that you were strongly between two styles.
So I hadn’t fully jumped into a three-word method wardrobe yet, and wanted to give it a shot today with this one that seems contradictory at face level but so good when you get into it.
As spring is around the corner, there is that hint of warmer days, sunshine, and fresh air, which (at least to me) inspires a new sense of possibility when it comes to dressing.
I already felt it a bit over the last week and while today is quite cold again, the spring-like weather is predicted over the next week.
This makes it a good time to rethink what’s hanging in your closet, and craft a capsule wardrobe that is distinctly your own.
But we’re not talking about the traditional minimalist approach here.
No, this spring, we’re leaning into something that I find far more interesting. It is going to be a mix of 1970s nostalgia, modern minimalism, and an edgy, rebelliousness to round it out.
Creating this capsule isn’t about just adding a few key pieces to your wardrobe.
It’s about curating a collection of garments that speak to your personal style while embracing the essence of these three aesthetics.
Imagine the free-spirited, bohemian vibe of the 1970s paired with the sleek precision of modern design and the unexpected, avant-garde touches of edginess.
We want to blend these elements into your spring wardrobe without looking like you stepped out of a time machine.

The 1970s Influence
The 1970s were a decade of duality, both relaxed and refined, structured yet free-spirited. That balance is exactly what makes it so wearable today.
They were also all about self-expression, freedom, and boldness, and these themes should be at the core of your capsule.
Start by incorporating pieces that channel the spirit of that era but with an updated spin.
Think high-waisted flared jeans, suede fringe jackets, and patterned blouses that channel the boho vibes of the time.
The key here is to embrace secondhand to find authentic pieces, but also to seek out modern takes on these classics in order to balance it with the vintage.
A pair of perfectly cut flare jeans in washed-out denim can feel effortlessly retro while maintaining a sleek, modern silhouette.
Balance structured with slouchy like a relaxed suede or leather jacket, with well-fitting jeans, or go the opposite way with a fitted jacket with slouchier jeans.
It brings complementary balance and refinement that’s much more contemporary.
Don’t forget accessories.
The 1970s were heavy on statement pieces, from oversized sunglasses to chunky belts and embroidered scarves.
But opt for accessories that feel fresh and freshen up your look, perhaps a vintage or vintage-inspired leather bag with a twist like metallic accents or bold hardware, or retro sunglasses with a modern frame.
Modern Minimalism
If the 1970s provided the bold strokes, modern minimalism adds the fine detailing.
To truly honour the spring season, focus on simplicity.
Opt for neutral colours like cream, charcoal, muted olive, and black. These shades aren’t just versatile; they create a sophisticated backdrop that lets your standout pieces truly shine.
The modern aesthetic is about clean lines and thoughtful cuts.
Think, a well-tailored blazer, an A-line midi skirt in a lightweight fabric, or a crisp white button-down that feels luxurious.
These staples act as the foundation of your capsule wardrobe, ready to pair with more adventurous pieces from the ’70s-inspired side of your collection.
The beauty of minimalism is that it exudes an effortless, understated cool, allowing you to mix and match without overthinking.
The trick to making minimalism feel modern and not stale is texture.
Play with natural materials like linen, cotton, and silk because these fabrics offer a breath of fresh air compared to synthetic blends.
Try pairing a silk blouse with tailored trousers, or a chunky knit sweater with wide-leg pants in a neutral tone.
The contrast in texture adds an unexpected depth while still keeping the overall look clean and sharp.
Edgy Elements
What would a spring capsule be without a little edge? At least in my world, that is an important element.
Edginess isn’t always about leather jackets and chains, although a well-crafted leather jacket never goes out of style.
A capsule wardrobe with an edge isn’t about being overtly tough, it’s about subtle rebellion.
Instead, think of it as an attitude.
It’s the juxtaposition of softness with something unexpected.
A flowing silk blouse unbuttoned just so, paired with a wide belt and boots.
A tailored vest worn alone as a top, or layered with a sheer, mesh turtleneck for that extra hit of unpredictability.
It’s about taking something traditional and turning it on its head. This is where you can let your imagination run wild.
Like the flat black sock boots with studs which are an epic addition to your wardrobe that will bring you no regrets.
Some pieces to consider might be a sleek leather trench coat that nods to the past but still feels bold and progressive, or a pair of combat boots paired with a floaty floral dress for a high-low contrast.
As we know I love a good juxtaposition in an outfit. There’s a certain magic in mixing opposites that feels rebellious and freeing.
Or perhaps you’d take a modern twist on the classic denim jacket, choosing one with asymmetrical cuts or deconstructed details.
A dress or jumpsuit in a heavy-duty fabric, like denim or black leather, embodies a futuristic, almost utilitarian vibe, while still honouring the retro, space-age energy of the ’70s.
This is where your edginess can truly shine, merging utility with creativity.
Curating Your Spring Capsule: Less Is More, But Never Boring
The art of a capsule wardrobe is finding balance.
You’re not looking to create a static collection that limits your personal style; instead, you’re curating pieces that can be interchanged and reimagined to fit the vibe of each day.
This spring capsule should allow you to mix ’70s throwbacks with modern staples and those unpredictable, edgy elements in a way that feels both effortless and intentional.
A great way to start is by picking one or two statement pieces from each aesthetic: perhaps a patterned blouse from the ’70s, a minimalistic coat from the modern era, and a pair of boots with an edge.
Then, keep the rest of your selections cohesive. A few great pairs of jeans, a couple of neutral-coloured tops, and a blazer that can be dressed up or down will allow you to remix and match endlessly.
Don’t forget that accessories are everything. I often slack in the accessories department besides sunglasses, a hat, or a great bag because my accessories aren’t easily available to just grab and go.
I need a better set-up to get more use out of them.
So maybe try a wide-brimmed hat that might evoke that 1970s free-spirited vibe, but if you pair it with a modern leather bag and a chunky gold necklace, you’ll create something much more interesting.
Footwear is a great place to focus.
The sneakers I chose are a modern iteration of a 1970s sneaker in a 70s colour combination.
The fringe clogs have that boho 70s element as well but are a pair that I literally just bought myself that I plan to mix with more modern pieces.
The black boots, for instance, could tie the whole thing together, adding just the right amount of contrast to the softer, vintage-inspired elements.
The key here is versatility, not just in styling, but in layering, in movement, in the ability to dress something up or pare it down with a simple swap of shoes or accessories.
What you want is a wardrobe that evolves with you, and that should be a wardrobe that is anything but ordinary.
At the heart of this spring capsule wardrobe is a collection of garments that will make you feel like yourself, someone empowered, stylish, and ever-ready for whatever the season brings.
By blending the effortless cool of the ’70s, the sleekness of modern minimalism, and the fearless spirit of edgy details, you’re creating a wardrobe that speaks to your individuality.
After all, fashion should never be one-dimensional because it’s a reflection of who you are, where you’ve been, and where you’re headed.
The goal is a wardrobe that doesn’t just look good but feels like home.
