I realized that I haven’t consistently put together an over 40 wardrobe. This is because it feels natural and day-to-day for me. As a result, I tend to not think of it as a niche.
But it definitely is a niche, so I am going to try to become more consistent with it.
This time I am leaning a little more minimalist style. I find that a lot of women my age who I talk to appreciate an easy minimalist look, but as long as it still projects personal style and is not basic.
We don’t want to fall into the basic trope.
I also like to try to include some trendy pieces since we still love to keep up to date with styles and trends although it usually is no longer the focus.
We never want a trends first, style second wardrobe. It brings in a lot of confusion and causes overconsumption and waste.
It is about embracing trends differently, and I like to showcase how to wear a trend in a way that is more suited to you.
For example, the cropped cape-like shrug on a 20-something might be worn as-is with some high waisted denim while embracing the stomach showing.
That look isn’t for me and I prefer to wear pieces like this over tanks, tees, turtlenecks, or camisoles. You get the picture.
To me, it is more suited to act like the third piece that completes a look.
I have talked about the third piece rule before, and while I am not a fashion rule follower, I like the concept and use them as guidance.
What is the Third Piece Rule?
The Third Piece Rule in fashion is a styling concept that helps elevate an outfit from basic to polished and put-together.
It involves adding a third piece to a look beyond the basic two (top and bottom) to create visual interest, depth, and personality.
It’s pretty easy peasy once you understand the concept. For many it is a no-brainer, but for those that struggle with pairing more than a top and bottom it can be a revolutionary idea.
Third Pieces Can Be:
- A blazer or jacket
- A cardigan or vest
- A scarf or shawl
- A statement accessory (e.g., bold jewellery, hat, or belt)
- A layering piece like a kimono or structured coat
It just depends on the goal for your completed look.
Now that we have discussed an easy way to level up your outfit we will proceed to the capsule wardrobe, and how we get there when we are 40+.

Dressing Women Over 40: Embracing Style and Overcoming Obstacles
Turning 40 is a milestone that often brings a shift in priorities, confidence, and self-awareness.
I personally found that I started to feel these things in my 30s, but there is a notable difference in how you are perceived once you hit 40 which isn’t always good.
If I am being honest, the perception usually isn’t good at all.
And even though it’s a time to celebrate everything you’ve accomplished and embrace your unique sense of style that you have worked hard to develop, navigating fashion after 40 also brings a set of challenges.
From finding pieces that you feel comfortable in, to balancing trends with longevity and versatility, the process of curating a wardrobe that works for you can feel overwhelming.
Which is why I like to embrace the fuck out of being 40+ and share the things that I have learned about dressing for myself along the way.
The Common Challenges
1. Finding Flattering Fits
And by flattering I don’t mean dressing for the male gaze, I mean something that makes you feel good and confident when you wear it.
Our bodies change as we age, which can make it difficult to find clothing that fits well and feels comfortable. What worked in your 20s or 30s may no longer suit your proportions or preferences.
It is all about growth and acceptance.
Solution: For many the solution is to invest in tailoring. Well-fitted clothing can make all the difference in how you look and feel.
Focus on pieces that enhance how you feel about your favourite parts of yourself because at this age we are dressing for us and no one else’s opinion matters.
2. Balancing Comfort and Style
As we grow older, comfort often becomes a higher priority. But prioritizing comfort doesn’t mean sacrificing style.
I am very much about comfort dressing, but I also have a very firm grasp on what I like and don’t like so I am comfortable taking chances on pieces that may be outside of the box when it comes to style.
Solution: And because many of us have entered the perimenopause stage of life we want to look for fabrics that feel good on the skin and allow movement. Things that breathe.
Think soft cotton, breathable linen, and stretchy knits. Incorporate versatile yet stylish shoes like block or kitten heels, loafers, or sneakers that offer support without compromising style.
I won’t walk in anything high heel. I just can’t do it. The lower the better but I do enjoy a little kitten heel for a subtle height.
I try to share pieces that I already own or have tried on in person. A few days ago I tried on this tunic top, and shrug from COS and I loved them both.
The tunic while supposed to be a dress is much better suited as a tunic. It has a great drape and perfect for spring.
The shrug was only available in black when I tried it, but I really like the grey. It would work well over a lot of different tops as I stated at the beginning of the post.
3. Navigating Trends
Staying current without looking like you’re trying too hard can be tricky. Many trends cater to younger audiences, leaving older women feeling excluded or unsure about what works for them.
Solution: I say screw it when it comes to this because why shouldn’t we wear what we want? The shame women get for “not dressing their age” is ridiculous and I for one will not have someone else dictate how I should dress because of my perceived age.
I am way too tired, and fed up with everything for this to even register on my radar anymore.
Wear what you want. Period.
Any problems someone may have are due to their own deeply rooted issues that they are projecting on you.
One of the reasons I bought the fuck buttons cardigan was to summarize my feelings about all this bullshit. You can see me wearing it here. It is the best.
You need to enjoy dressing for yourself. And if you need it, here is permission to wear what you want.
Embrace your style and forget about shouldering the burdens of other people’s opinions.
4. Forget Age-Appropriate Options
Shopping for clothing that feels modern yet “age-appropriate” is not worth your time because what is age-appropriate for one, won’t be for another. So let’s wipe that from our vocabulary.
Does this mean that you have to shop at Forever 21?
No, and that isn’t someplace that most of us should be shopping because it is basically the equivalent of when we used to buy a cheap “going out top” for one night back in the day.
Except I swear it is even worse quality now if that is possible. We don’t want a closet full of cheap going-out tops.
Solution: We want to seek out brands that cater to our style, not our age because that is what we are focusing on. Personal style.
It may take a while but after some time spent searching out what aligns with the look you want you. will begin to amass a collection of brands that align with the direction you want to go.
5. Feeling Confident in Your Choices
This one here is probably the hardest one for us to navigate.
It’s easy to feel self-conscious about your appearance as you age, especially when societal beauty standards favour youth.
Solution: Embrace your individuality. Style is a form of self-expression, so wear what makes you feel confident and authentic. Confidence is the ultimate accessory, and it’s timeless.
Like literally timeless, unlike fashion.
Dressing with Confidence: Practical Tips
1. Invest in Wardrobe Staples
We need to start with a base of high-quality basics but let’s strive for those no-so-basic, basics that I talk about frequently.
Pieces that have visual interest on their own, which elevates them beyond the typical basic pieces.
- An interesting jacket or blazer
- A button-down shirt with unique shapes or details
- Vintage jeans
- A versatile dress or skirt
- A statement coat
These items create a foundation that can be fleshed out by adding in some key pieces with visual interest as you build your wardrobe.
2. Embrace Colour Strategically
While neutrals are a great base, don’t shy away from colour. Jewel tones, earthy hues, and soft pastels can brighten your look and complement your complexion.
Which can actually go a long way. I am not one to focus on what season colours you may be, but I believe there are certain colours that will enhance how you look and how you feel.
3. Play with Accessories
Accessories are an easy way to update your style without committing to major wardrobe overhauls.
Statement necklaces, silk scarves, structured handbags, and belts can transform an outfit instantly.
4. Layer Thoughtfully
Layering adds sophistication and practicality to your outfits. Lightweight or oversized cardigans, blazers, and scarves allow you to adjust to fluctuating temperatures and add depth to your look.
5. Prioritize Versatility
Choose pieces that can transition seamlessly from work to weekend, like a midi dress that pairs with a blazer for the office and sneakers for errands.
Embracing Your Style Evolution
Fashion is about more than just clothing—it’s about how you express yourself and adapt to the life you’re living.
Remember, age is not a limitation; it’s an opportunity to redefine what fashion means to you. Wear what makes you feel amazing, and don’t be afraid to shine.
Even more important is to not let someone else dim your shine.
