This week I headed back in the minimalist direction but this time with what I always describe as edgy minimalism. I try to add a new way of thinking about or a new twist to traditional minimalist wardrobes to show you how to take a basic style and make it your own.

It is not the cookie cutter minimalism that is very formulaic usually consisting of a few neutral t-shirts, button-ups, jeans, and blazers.

You know which ones I am talking about.

Edgy minimalist is a style that combines the clean, streamlined look of minimalism with a touch of boldness or rebellion.

It’s about achieving a look that’s simple but impactful, with carefully chosen details that add an unexpected twist.

This style is defined by a restrained colour palette, usually dominated by black, white, grey, and other neutrals, alongside sleek, structured silhouettes. But then has a sprinkling of a bold colour or two to amplify it.

Unlike pure minimalism, which often aims for a very neutral, subdued look, edgy minimalism brings in a bit of attitude.

Think unexpected cuts, sharp lines, textured fabrics, and small but impactful details.

Building Winter Wardrobe With An Edgy Minimalist Aesthetic

If we want to create a winter wardrobe that’s both edgy and minimalist we want to focus on the minimalist approach which encourages thoughtful choices.

These are pieces that are versatile, high-quality, and perfect for layering.

The edgy side comes from adding pieces that have a bit of an unexpected flair, whether that’s through unique silhouettes, textures, colour, or subtle embellishments.

Unexpected is one of my style adjectives. I always like to have some part of my outfit be an unexpected pairing, or a way to wear something that is outside of the box.

When building wardrobes in general, especially ones that have a minimalist feel we generally start the same with and that is…

Start with a Foundation of Neutrals

A minimalist wardrobe relies on a base of neutral colours, like black, white, grey, and shades of beige. This palette creates a cohesive look where each piece can be mixed and matched seamlessly.

For an edgy twist, look for items that have subtle but unique details, like asymmetrical cuts, raw hems, or hidden zippers.

Choosing these slight variations in basic colours keeps your outfits visually interesting without overwhelming the minimal aesthetic.

Some Essential Neutral Pieces Are:

A Turtleneck: Which is a timeless piece for any winter wardrobe. For a more upscale vibe look for one in a luxurious knit, like merino wool or cashmere.

The sleek look of a turtleneck gives an instant sophisticated and edgy vibe when paired with denim, leather, or layered under coats.

An Oversized Cardigan: Like a chunky knit cardigan in a cool shade of grey, black, or navy can serve as both a top layer and a part of a layering system.

Opt for an oversized fit to create contrast with slimmer bottoms and add a bit of a grungy, edgy vibe.

I went with a men’s grandpa-style cardigan in navy. It has a masculine flare but when paired with a bold necklace or feminine shoe there is an interesting style contrast.

Charcoal or Black Trousers: Wide-leg trousers are an unexpected, bold choice in a minimalist wardrobe. The shape is comfortable and adds drama to your outfit without breaking the minimalist vibe.

You can try a barrel style for more of an interesting shaped silhouette as well.

Choose a Statement Coat

A statement coat is an essential element in any winter wardrobe, especially one that leans towards minimalism, because you want to make sure you don’t fall into the minimalism is boring trap.

Since your outerwear will likely be the first thing people notice, it’s worth investing in a piece with unique elements.

Different Types of Statement Coats:

Black Wool Coat with Oversized Lapels. Look for a slightly oversized fit to play with proportions. Details like extra-wide lapels, an exaggerated collar, or a belted waist add interest while maintaining a sleek aesthetic.

Leather Trench Coat: Leather trench coats add a touch of edge and luxury. They are not only great for keeping warm but also create an effortlessly cool silhouette.

Look for one with faux collars or cuffs for a cool vintage touch.

Puffer Jacket in Matte Black: A puffer is a great option for colder climates. Choose one with a matte finish to maintain a sophisticated look, and go for an oversized fit for added drama.

This piece works well in casual settings and can be dressed up with the right accessories.

If you want one truly standout try a wool in a bright colour, or a puffer in silver.

Incorporate Textured Basics

To keep your minimalist wardrobe visually engaging, add textured basics that bring depth and personality to your outfits. A textured piece instantly elevates the look without deviating from a monochromatic colour scheme.

Try textured pieces like:

Ribbed Knit Tops – A ribbed black or grey sweater is subtle but adds visual interest to your outfit. Pair it with leather pants or tailored trousers for a chic look.

Leather Pants – Leather pants are edgy and functional, adding warmth and a sleek look. Pair them with oversized sweaters or a turtleneck for a perfect contrast of textures.

Chunky Knit Sweater – For particularly cold days, a chunky sweater in a neutral shade will add depth to your wardrobe. Go for one with interesting details, like balloon sleeves or a high neck, for a touch of unexpected style.

Invest in Versatile, Edgy Footwear

Shoes are a key element in an edgy minimalist wardrobe. The right pair can elevate a simple outfit, adding an element of surprise to a classic ensemble.

Footwear Choices:

Ankle Boots – Go for a pair with a pointed toe or metal hardware for an added edge. Black ankle boots are versatile and look good with almost anything. I chose a pair with a triangular heel that reminds me of the heels on much more expensive Isabel Marant boots.

I also opted for a snake print pair because it is an awesome alternative to animal print and gaining in popularity. I have these boots which you can see on me here. They have a very square toe and are true to size.

Knee High Boots – Choose a looser fit or a more streamlined look. Wear them with wide-leg, straight, or barrel jeans, leather pants, and dresses or skirts.

A Sneaker – Sneakers are good for any style but I wanted to pick one that has a little more of a sleeker look. I chose the Puma Speedcat which is a reissue of the 1999 shoe and is gaining in popularity becoming hard to find at the moment.

This is me telling you to get ahead of the trend and grab a pair now if you like them because you won’t be able to find a pair soon.

If you are in Canada Brown’s Shoes has them fully stocked in black, and red.

I have them in the black because I realized that I don’t have a minimalist black sneaker, most of mine are fun colours.

I find they fit about half a size small. I had to exchange them from an 8 to 8.5 when I am almost always a US 8.

Layer with Purposeful Accessories

Accessories can make or break a minimalist outfit. Stick to a few high-quality pieces that make a statement without overwhelming the simplicity of your clothing.

For me, key accessories are usually bags.

I love to make a statement with a bag, especially a secondhand bag. I chose a Telfar tote in a highlighter yellow which is one of my statement colours in this wardrobe.

What I love about Telfar bags besides the option of three different sizes (I love the big one) are the colours.

There are so many fantastic colours to choose from, and besides the yellow, I really want a green one but they sell fast on the secondhand market so I always miss out.

I’ll leave the green one for someone else though because I promised myself that I am not buying a new-used bag for a bit.

Key Accessories:

Beanies and Scarves in Colours – You can stick to classic winter accessories like beanies and scarves in black, grey, or deep neutrals. But if you want to add a bit of visual interest try a colour, or choose a ribbed or cable-knit texture.

Leather Gloves – Last winter I bought a pair of bright red half-scoop gloves for their statement. We haven’t been having really cold winters recently so they were perfectly fine. They also have a lot of colours to choose from.

The half scoop makes them seem like an intentional accessory rather than a utilitarian one. It also gives them a very vintage vibe.

You can also opt for black or charcoal leather gloves with minimalist detailing, like zippers or studs. They’re functional and stylish, adding a hint of luxury.

Bold Sunglasses – In winter, sunglasses can add a mysterious touch to your look. because yes sunglasses are still necessary in winter.

Go for a classic pair in a bold shape or colour. Aviators or oversized round frames work well with an edgy minimalist aesthetic.

Incorporate Statement Tops for Layering

Since layering is key in winter, having a few statement tops that can work under or over other pieces adds dimension to your wardrobe. Think about adding tops that can be the centerpiece of an outfit when you remove your coat.

Suggested Statement Tops:

Graphic T-shirt or Long Sleeve – In a minimalist wardrobe, even a graphic tee can make a statement. Opt for one in a monochrome colour scheme with abstract or minimalist designs for a bit of edge.

Mock Neck Tops with Unique Cuts – A mock neck in a stretchy material with asymmetrical cuts or thumb holes can bring a bit of personality to your basics.

Button-Down Shirt in an Unexpected Cut or Fabric – A black or dark charcoal button-down shirt in satin or silk can be a surprising addition to a minimalist wardrobe, giving a sophisticated, polished touch when layered under a sweater or paired with leather pants.

I chose a steel grey button up with an asymmetrical button front.

Final Touches: Jewellery and Belts

Jewellery and belts are easy ways to add a subtle edge without overpowering a minimalist look. You don’t need a lot to make an impact because the right piece of jewellery or belt can transform your outfit from basic to chic.

Chunky Silver or Gold Rings – A bold ring adds just the right amount of detail without taking away from the simplicity of your outfit.

Layered or a Statement Necklace – A few thin, delicate necklaces layered over a turtleneck or under a coat give just a hint of sophistication. But a dramatic piece speaks volumes with minimal effort.

Choose ones with geometric pendants or simple bars for a minimalist vibe.

Earrings in a Minimal Unique Design – Stick to simple, elegant earrings that won’t distract but still add a touch of polish. I love that these are shaped like a bird in an abstract way.

Belts Black Leather Belt with Minimalist Buckle – A simple black belt with a metal buckle can add structure to an oversized sweater or coat. It’s a subtle detail but makes a big impact.

Or a black leather belt with studded hardware on it. I had one like this in around 2001 that I wore until the leather disintegrated.

But you could also try a wide statement belt If you’re wearing a dress or an oversized shirt. A wide belt can add definition to your waist and elevate your outfit with minimal effort.

I have a winter coat that is open front with no buttons or waist ties so I bought a leather rope belt to cinch it closed and it works perfectly to give the coat some shape. You can see it here.

Edgy minimalist fashion is about standing out subtly. The look is cool, modern, and a little mysterious, making it perfect for those who appreciate simplicity but want their style to feel a bit unconventional or rebellious.
