Easy Summer Outfits When You Are in a Style Rut

It would be no surprise to anyone that I dislike summer. That is something that I tend to start vocalizing as soon as the temperature hits the early 20s.

Something about the heat and humidity completely sucks the joy out of dressing for me.

We’ve all been there, standing in front of our closets, feeling uninspired by the same old outfits.

It is probably because building a look through layers is how my personal style works, and in the summer I feel like I have to pare it back to the basic core.

It has revolved around oversized t-shirts and button-ups, cuffed jeans, cropped pants, skirts, and dresses.

Then sprinkle in the non-seasonal appropriate outfits and that summarizes my summer wardrobe. So basically I have to try harder and go further out of my comfort zone while dressing in the summer.

It is actually a really great time to take some risks though.

That being said, I have a collection of go-to outfit ideas that are easy to wear, and many of us have these pieces in some variation which makes it easy to implement a version of these looks from our own wardrobe.

I usually do these in a digital style guide but I wanted to have it available for everyone. Time are tight, I get it.

Sometimes all it takes is someone to mention a different way to wear a piece that you already have, to make you look at your wardrobe with new eyes.

With summer wardrobes we can’t rely on the building of layers and heavy fabric textures so we need to play with proportions, colour, and use juxtaposition to climb out of the standard shorts and t-shirt summer rut.

We can still do layers but it has to be lightweight, or through the use of accessories.

I also included pieces that will transition well to the fall season to make the most out of everything.

How to get out of a summer style rut

Mix and Match Unexpectedly – Try pairing items you wouldn’t normally put together. That floral sundress with a striped t-shirt? Dressy shorts with a vintage graphic tee? Give it a shot. Experimenting with unexpected combinations can breathe new life into your existing wardrobe.

Accessorize – Never underestimate the power of accessories. A statement necklace, colourful scarf, or eye-catching belt can transform a basic outfit into something special. Try incorporating some trendy pieces like oversized sunglasses, anklets, or layered necklaces.

Play with Colors and Patterns – Summer is the perfect time to be bold with your colour choices. If you typically stick to neutrals, try incorporating a vibrant hue or playful print. Mix patterns for a fun, eclectic look, or try colour-blocking for a modern twist.

Rediscover Your Closet – This one is key. Sometimes the solution to a style rut is hiding in plain sight. Spend an afternoon reorganizing your closet – you might rediscover forgotten pieces or find new ways to style old favourites.

Invest in Versatile Pieces – Consider adding a few high-quality, versatile items to your wardrobe. A well-fitting white button-down, comfortable yet stylish sandals. If you are going to live in it all summer long, invest in the nicest one your budget allows.

Embrace New Silhouettes – If you always wear fitted clothes, try something flowy. If you’re a fan of maxi dresses, experiment with midi lengths. Changing up your usual silhouettes can make your whole look feel fresh and exciting.

DIY and Upcycle – This isn’t for everyone, but sometimes small changes can make a huge difference. Get creative with pieces you already own.

Cut those old jeans into trendy shorts, dye a plain white tee, replace the buttons on a shirt or cardigan, or add some embroidery to a simple canvas bag.

Not only is this budget-friendly, but it also gives you unique, personalized pieces.

Explore Thrift Stores and Online Shops – At thrift stores you might find unique pieces that can revamp your wardrobe. Online Shopping can lead to the exploration and discovery of new brands and styles that you haven’t tried before.

Some Easy to Wear Summer Outfit Formulas

Bold tank + Neutral Skirt + Bold shoe

Tank | Skirt | Hair Claw | Handbag | Shoes

It is like a colour sandwich, and since the skirt is midi length this means that 50% of the outfit is neutral so you won’t feel too overwhelmed with colour. Adding colour can be daunting to many so balancing it with neutrals is really an easy way to ease into it.

Linen Top + Sports Shorts + Cute Flat

Shirt | Shorts | Bag | Flats

Sporty style is really having a moment. Mixing it with unexpected non sporty pieces makes this look like an intentionally styled outfit versus a cliche look, like pairing these shorts with a t-shirt, and sneakers would look.

The juxtaposition is what makes the look interesting.

Bermuda Shorts + Fitted Cardigan + Fisherman Sandals

Cardigan | Shorts | Tote | Sunglasses | Sandals

Try a pair of shorts in a looser Bermuda length. These are linen. Since they are looser and flowy I think pairing it with a more fitted cardigan adds a nice proportion. Remember too that not everyone has extreme summer heat.

Some pieces won’t work in some climates. You could easily swap the cardigan for a light knit fitted polo shirt as well. I saw this one in store today and I really liked the fit and feel of the fabric.

It was very lightweight and soft.

A Matching Set

Cami | Skirt | Ballet Flats | Flip Flops | Handbag

When in doubt go for a set. They also break up well to mix and match with the rest of your wardrobe.

A nice monochromatic look is very chic. You could even do monochrome all the way down to the shoes, or opt for more 90s/Y2K styling and pair it with flip flops.

Masculine Top + Feminine Skirt

Sweatshirt | Skirt | Sunglasses | Handbag | Sandals

I always love looking through my wardrobe to find masculine and feminine pieces to pair together. It’s like a game to me. “Is this too much? Too chaotic looking? I’m going to give it a try.”

In this look I have an overtly feminine, floral skirt paired with a masculine 80s inspired short sleeve sweatshirt. Like when they used to cut the sleeves off. For funsies, you can find an authentic men’s 80s cutoff sweatshirt.

A LBD + Ballet Flats

Dress | Ballet Flats | Earrings | Handbag

Nothing is more classic than a black dress and ballet flats. It is very Audry Hepburn, and a tried and true classic. It also makes you feel like a million bucks with minimal effort.

I find that Aritzia always has a nice variety of simple summer dresses like this one which has thicker straps and pockets.

I also love their slip dresses.

Interesting Jeans + Bandeau + Colourful Shoes

Bandeau | Jeans | Sandals | Earrings | Handbag

Do you have any jeans that could be described as interesting? The pinstripe gives this pair a trouser feeling while still maintaining the casualness of jeans.

You could pair them with any basic top because the pants are interesting enough that you don’t need more.

Pair them with a nice linen bandeau or sleeveless knit top, and add some colourful shoes.

Linen Top + Wide Leg Trousers + Flip Flops

Linen Top | Trousers | Flip Flops | Earrings | Clutch

Sometimes we just want to wear black, or shades of black. This outfit is for those days.

A wide-leg trouser that looks dressy but still maintains a laid back casualness through the elastic waist, and a linen top in a dressy wrap design.

Pair them with flip flops to dress down the look but you could also try a sleek flat like the white pair from the sporty outfit.

Stepping out of a style rut is all about trying new things and having fun with your wardrobe. So, embrace the summer vibes and experiment with different looks. Trying new things and stepping out of your comfort zone can help you discover new aspects of your personal style

But most of all, it is important to have fun with it.
