A 12 Piece Romantic Style Fall Capsule Wardrobe

This romantic style fall capsule took me a while. I ended up scrapping it and going in a completely different direction at the last minute.

So I want to premise this post by saying that the romantic style is probably the one that I least identify with, and it makes these posts quite challenging for me.

In my styling classes it always ranked among the lowest whenever I had to do any kind of style self-evaluation.

That being said, I know it, it just takes me longer to pick things because I keep getting sidetracked with pieces that don’t fit the romantic style aesthetic.

Romantic fashion style for women is characterized by its soft, feminine, and dreamy aesthetic.

This style draws inspiration from eras such as the Victorian and Edwardian periods, as well as elements of vintage and bohemian fashion which is why it baffles me that I don’t embrace it more because I love the fashion in those periods.

The romantic fashion style has a few key characteristics that helps to make it stand out from other styles.

What is a Romantic Style?

First, it often features a palette of soft, pastel colours such as blush pink, lavender, ivory, and mint green.

These colours create a gentle and delicate appearance.

BUT, you could go the opposite way and do deep tones in rich, romantic fabrics like I did. A deep romantic versus a soft romantic.

It actually might be a different idea for some of you who love the romantic style but don’t like the softer colours.

Give it a try and see if it resonates better.

Fabrics like chiffon, lace, silk, and organza are commonly used in romantic clothing. These materials drape gracefully and add an ethereal quality to the outfits.

These fabrics can be used in the colder months too when paired with light knits, soft cashmere, faux fur, and tights.

In the cooler months, we need to focus more on the design and accents of pieces along with the fabrics.

So wrap sweaters, belted long jackets, high-waisted, loose pants, beading, pearls, berets, fuzzy scarves, velvet, and soft leather pieces like gloves.

Think more of a 1930s vibe when it comes to dressing in the cooler months.

Garments with ruffles, frills, and lace details are staples of romantic style. They add texture and a touch of whimsy to dresses, blouses, and skirts.

I love this skirt and wanted to include it, but it is one of those pieces that won’t go with everything that you have, so it is better suited to add to a wardrobe as a star piece instead of including it in this small capsule.

I think that you could have a lot of fun with it though. It would be fantastic layered underneath another skirt or dress as well.

Almost like a fabulous crinoline.

Floral patterns, especially small and delicate prints, are a hallmark of romantic fashion. Floral dresses, blouses, and accessories are popular choices.

Check out the little flower earrings that I included. They have a vintage feel and are so lovely.

I really love lace, and it is often used to create a delicate and intricate look. It can be found on dresses, blouses, and even as a decorative element on accessories like gloves and scarves.

Romantic fashion often incorporates vintage-inspired silhouettes, such as empire waistlines, A-line dresses, and puffed sleeves.

These shapes emphasize the femininity and grace from previous eras.

Flowy maxi dresses, tea-length dresses, and midi skirts are common in romantic style. These garments move gracefully and create a sense of fluidity.

Sheer fabrics and sheer panels are used to add a hint of sensuality while maintaining an overall delicate look.

Sheer is a trend this season, so you will have no issues finding a variety of looks.

Accessories like ribbon headbands, pearl jewellery, lace gloves, and delicate floral crowns complement the romantic style.

Vintage-style handbags and ballet flats or dainty heels are also popular choices. Here Etsy is your friend for sourcing these items.

Last spring at the vintage clothing show I bought a vintage pearl collar that would work for this. Maybe I do have a little romantic in me.

Here’s the thing. Even a sweatshirt can be given a romantic vibe when accessorized. Check out this video using a brooch.

It’s brilliant and so effective in altering the look of a simple sweatshirt.

For romatic makeup try soft, natural-looking makeup with rosy cheeks and pastel eyeshadows that complement the romantic look.

Hairstyles may include loose waves, braids, or updos adorned with flowers or ribbons.

This sounds kind of like bridal hair but bows, ribbons, and flowers are really in right now for accessories.

You should be seeing them everywhere.

Light, lacy cardigans, shawls, or vintage-inspired coats can be worn to complete the look during cooler weather.

A beautiful belted-waist coat is perfect for winter. Bonus points if it has a removable faux fur collar.

Lingerie as clothes is also a trend this season.

Maybe it’s the year of the romantic dressers?

Romantic lingerie often features lace, satin, and delicate details.

Corsets and bralettes are popular choices for creating a romantic undergarment look, and once again something you should have no difficulty finding.

The romantic fashion style is all about embracing femininity and creating a dreamy, timeless appearance. It allows for creativity and self-expression through clothing while maintaining a soft and elegant aesthetic.

Keep in mind that personal interpretations and variations of the romantic style are common, and individuals may mix it with other fashion elements to create their own unique looks.

Here are some romantic outfit ideas to get you started with pieces that you probably already own if this is your style.

Romantic style outfits often incorporate soft, feminine elements, delicate fabrics, and a touch of vintage charm.

Floral Midi Dress:
A floral midi dress in pastel shades or soft, muted colours is a classic romantic look. Pair it with lace up boots or ballet flats for a whimsical touch.

Lace Blouse and A-Line Skirt:
Combine a lacy blouse with an A-line skirt in a coordinating colour. This combination exudes elegance and femininity and is a simple look to throw together in a pinch.

Flowy Maxi Dress:
Opt for a flowy, floor-length maxi dress with a cinched waist to create a flattering silhouette. Pastel or earthy tones work well for a romantic vibe.

Off-Shoulder Top and High-Waisted Jeans:
This one has a more casual vibe. An off-shoulder or bardot-style top paired with high-waisted, wide-leg jeans creates a trendy yet romantic look.

Add some statement earrings for extra flair.

Try looking at Sezane for the perfect romantic sweater options. Reformation also has a very feminine, romantic vibe.

Tulle Skirt and Fitted Sweater:
Pair a tulle or chiffon skirt with a fitted sweater. This mix of textures adds depth to your outfit, making it both cozy and romantic.

Wrap Dress:
A wrap dress is universally flattering and exudes a romantic feel. Opt for a soft, flowy fabric like chiffon or silk for an elegant touch.

Ruffled Blouse and Tailored Pants:
Choose a blouse with ruffled details and pair it with well-fitted tailored pants. This combination strikes a balance between sophistication and romance.

Vintage-Inspired Tea Dress:
This is my favourite length of dress. I’m getting more romantic by the minute.

Embrace vintage vibes with a tea-length dress featuring lace, polka dots, or floral prints. Finish the look with Mary Jane shoes or dainty flats.

Layered Lace and Cardigans:
Layer a lace camisole or blouse under a lightweight cardigan. This combination is perfect for transitional weather and adds a subtle romantic touch.

Bohemian Chic:
Combine a flowy bohemian maxi dress with a beret and boots/flats/Mary Janes for a romantic, french inspired look

Accessories:
This is wear vintage shopping will come in handy. Accessorize with delicate jewellery, such as pearl or floral-inspired pieces.

Little hats, a vintage handbag, or a silk scarf can also complete your romantic ensemble.

Hairstyle and Makeup:
Soft, loose waves or a low bun with natural, soft makeup can enhance the romantic look. Soft, rosy cheeks and a nude lip colour work well.

Remember that it isn’t always about the individual pieces, it is how you wear them together that can really build a romantic look.

So keep that in mind when searching for items. If it doesn’t check the romantic style box try mentally paring it with items that do, and see if that changes how you think about it.

Overall, the romantic style exudes a sense of femininity, nostalgia, and elegance.

It allows individuals to express their love for softness, grace, and a dreamy aesthetic in their clothing and accessories. It’s a versatile style that can be adapted for both everyday wear and special occasions.

Personal style is about expressing your unique taste and personality.

Feel free to mix and match these ideas to create outfits that resonate with you and make you feel confident and most like yourself.

  1. Lovely. My mom and both of my sisters would have loved this. I like the ideas in theory, but not for me. Well, maybe something romantic for my granddaughter’s upcoming wedding.🌸

    • Thanks Gloria, I love parts of it. The whole concept wouldn’t work for me but I could see myself incorporating pieces.

  2. It’s not my overall style either, but I can definitely imagine some of the items in an edgy look. The brooch and sweatshirt, for instance, would be brilliant!

  3. I have been waiting for this one, Sara, and it did NOT disappoint!!! So good, as usual, and romantic in a sophisticated way. Most of us don’t want to look like we’re in our Lover Era, we just like a bit more romantic, feminine clothing. You nailed it. Thanks so much!

  4. Absolutely loved this post! The selection of pieces is not only cozy but also so effortlessly romantic. Can’t wait to incorporate these ideas into my own fall wardrobe! Thanks for the inspiration!
