I found some men’s secondhand Levi’s 501s this week and I really liked the fit and the wash so I bought them. The part I didn’t like is that they had patches sewn to the knees that were decorative, not actually covering a hole.
So I figured I would just take them off.
Easier said than none, because there is 9 million tiny stitches and it has taken me hours. I managed to get one off but I have to sit and pick out all the remaining threads.
There was also some dye transfer from the patch that I hope some Oxyclean can get out, or at least fade significantly.
The second one seems to look okay underneath so far.
I’m still not done as I am posting this.
I don’t know whether to stay up and finish it, so I can soak it overnight in the Oxyclean, or just go to bed and continue tomorrow.
I’m leaning toward bed.
I can’t believe that someone went to this much effort to attach these patches in such a manner that they are never coming off when there wasn’t even a hole underneath. It’s so annoying.
This is some hardcore stitch work.

Sara I can relate to your Levi’s situation! I am also a Levi’s lover. Last year I thrifted a white pair of 501s and I have them in a box of summer clothing. I left the plastic bin slightly ajar enough that some liquid shoe conditioner splashed in while I was cleaning my boots and there is a weird purple stain! I am trying a product I found at the store called Out – White Brite (a powder). Sadly it won’t fix my lemon yellow chiffon top!
Oh no! I hope you can get it out. Thankfully they are white. The indigo patch on mine left a magenta dye transfer that doesn’t want to come out so I think I’ll just have to embrace it. I’m sorry about the chiffon top. It’s always disappointing when you can’t salvage something.
