Are you packing for Venice, Italy in the transitional weather of late summer to early fall? Don’t know what to pack? This Venice packing list may be able to steer you in the right direction.

As in any large city in the world, in Venice you are going to get a variety of Italian fashion and styles. Italians tend to prefer tailored, and more fitted styles than what you may be used to seeing. Think of adding a little bit of Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday and/or Sabrina inspiration to your Venice travel wardrobe.

To not stick out like a tourist try to avoid gym wear, baseball hats, or short shorts. Remember that many Historic churches require modest attire. You can and will be turned away at the door if you are showing “too much skin”.

This means covering your chest, thighs, and shoulders. To avoid this it is a good idea to review what your daily itinerary is so that you can dress the part. It is also easy to include a lightweight shawl, cardigan, or large scarf in your Venice travel capsule so that you can cover up in a pinch.

If you plan on going to any of the more prestigious establishments, dress codes are enforced in many of these locations as well. You’ll need to add a dressier option or two to your Venice packing list which will be easy to do once you streamline your travel capsule wardrobe.

September is when the tourist filled Venice of August begins to transition in both weather and busyness. The daily temperatures are not as intense as summer, although they can still be quite hot at times. The nights will cool down considerably, so plan to dress in layers and be prepared for extremes.

How do you pack light for Venice at this time of year? Bring light fabrics that you can easily mix and match. Linen is always a good choice because a nice linen blouse looks both chic and keeps you cool. I love the linen blouses at Uniqlo because they fit well and are less expensive than some other retailers.

The humidity and canals of Venice can bring out the mosquitos, so if they love to bite you as much as they do me then you might want to use a repellant. I have read some good things about these mosquito repellent bracelets if you want something quick and easy.

If you plan on visiting Lido beach in Venice then don’t forget your swimsuit. Lido is also the only island that has roads and cars so be cautious, because you’ll be accustomed to not having to pay attention to cars.

Venice is considered one of the most beautiful places in the world, and a city for pedestrians. It’s actually a collection of more than 100 islands that are attached by bridges, so prepare to do a lot of walking. It’s also a good idea to note what “sestiere” or district/neighbourhood you are in (there are 6 districts in Venice) to help you if you get lost because the Sestiere is used more often than the street name.

Did you know that a few years ago the city of Venice were thinking of banning rolling suitcases? They said that the sound of the wheels rolling down the streets and over bridges made entirely too much racket. I can see how that would be pretty embarrassing and uncomfortable having the whole family rolling their suitcases down the street. To avoid being part of the “traveller noise pollution” you may want to use a carry-on size backpack instead. This one has great reviews.

*Don’t forget to bring a reusable bag that is small enough that it can be folded and put in your purse. It will come in really handy if you are doing a lot for shopping while you are walking the city.
