This week I am talking packing for kids. It’s a topic that has been asked of me quite a few times and while I am by no means an expert I can give some ideas to what would work for us with a 5-year-old and 11-year-old.
First I would take into consideration how messy my kid is. This will determine how much I need to bring. Especially if access to laundry isn’t readily available. Merle my 5-year-old uses her clothes as a napkin so I would need to bring a couple of extras for her. Also pieces that can easily be rinsed and hung to dry in between laundering are good because you don’t want a stain sitting in your dirty laundry the whole trip.
Roo (11-year-old)on the other hand can wear the same shirt for days. I literally have to steal her favourite jeans from her to wash them otherwise she would go so long in between washing them that they will be able to walk on their own. She could get away with fewer items. (Unless of course she falls asleep on an open chocolate bar. That’s a whole other messy issue we’ve experienced).
This first list with outfit options is for a younger child. I based it on her favourite colour yellow and she wears a lot of leggings, tunics, and fun socks. This would be a late fall or winter list of regular touring and sightseeing (nothing extreme where you would need complete snow suits).
We live in southern Ontario so we adapt well to cooler weather and a warm jacket and knit hat is all we need. If you are used to warmer weather than the cold will feel more extreme so you need to pack accordingly. This may mean thermals under your regular clothes. Tights under pants are also a good option.
For what to pack on the plane for entertainment for younger kids I have compiled some ideas in this post.
Ten outfit options are below with room to make many more combinations. The older child packing list can be found in this post.

OMG, how cute are these clothes?! I would have loved to have such a wardrobe when I was a kid. Cheers, Ardith
I know eh? And all the yellow. Merle would be in heaven. She has the yellow boots though. She has a thing about wearing yellow or something with cats on it, so Tom bought her the ugliest grumpy cat hat I’ve ever seen. It looks like it’s made with effing muppet fur and she loves it. It makes her happy so what can you do 😉
That’s hilarious. Do you have pix of the grumpy cat? P.S. When I was in junior high I was obsessed with yellow and orange. I even had an orange faux fur coat I just loved. I wore it with a yellow and orange mini dress I had, and orange platform shoes. Cheers, Ardith
Ha! Tom has a picture on his phone where she has a grumpy face too. I should get him to send it to me. I’m pretty sure grumpy cat is her spirit animal 😉 Yellow and orange sounds so 60’s hippy. I was obsessed with the 60’s in highschool.
