How to Find Your Right Bra Size

Almost two years ago a close friend of mine on a birth-board posted a link that was a life changer. Back story: I have been relatively small my entire life. I am 5’3″ and my weight has always fluctuated from 100-115 lbs except during pregnancy when I topped out at 140-143 lbs each time with my weight gain being strictly belly and boobs. So my bra size has pretty much been consistent since I was 15 except during the times I was pregnant. Pregnancy wreaked havoc on my boobs. Large to small, large to small, it really deflated what I had, and when you don’t have much to begin with it makes for sad little boobs. I have always worn a 32B. It has never, ever been comfortable and I constantly would be adjusting it, but every time I got measured this was the size I was told that I am. So I just dealt with it because I thought that is how it was supposed to be (especially since most women wear incorrect sizes and are also adjusting or complaining of discomfort). I didn’t know any better.

Little did I know that most places that sell bras and do measurements for you automatically give you the sister size if your actual size happens to be a that size they don’t carry. And to top it off they don’t actually tell you that it isn’t the actual size because they want to make the sale. So you end up wearing a completely wrong size for the 20 years you have worn a bra because someone wanted commission. Not cool.

Bra Poster

When my friend posted the link back in 2013 we all commented back with what our new “accurate sizes” were. Most of our sizes ended up being way different from what we had worn, we were shocked and in many cases didn’t believe that we were in fact these sizes. The measuring yourself part is actually pretty simple. You just need a few minutes alone to accurately measure since you have to do it topless.  The first step is to read this article Everything You Never Knew You Needed to Know About Bras. It’s very informative and eye-opening. You need to learn the Scoop and Swoop step of placing your breasts into the bra properly to achieve maximum presentation and fit.  The next step is the measurement. It’s from a Reddit thread about Bra fitting and measuring experiences. The whole thread was jam-packed with information and funny stories and experiences most of us had, had. But I am going to highlight and link the measurement post from MyWifesBusty. Read it carefully, follow the instruction and be prepared to be amazed. All you need is paper, pen, a cloth measuring tape, and your naked torso. After you take your measurements you can manually figure out your size or input your measurements into this calculator. Most calculator online suck but this is one of the better ones.

When I said this was a life changer, I literally meant it. I went from a 32B to a 28DD. That is a huge difference. I was excited to find this out but also frustrated to realize that this wasn’t going to be a size that I found in  any regular bra store. I reached out to my friends who also had hard to find bra sizes, although there’s mostly were regular band but too big cup size problems. I was referred to a UK site called FigLeaves who specialize in irregular and hard to find sizes, and there it was listed under their regular bras, a 28DD. I also hear that both Bare Necessities and Nordstroms also have hard to find sizes for convenient shopping within the United States. I was excited and scared to make that first purchase because I couldn’t try it on. I was nervous about spending the money on a bra that I based the sizing on from a Reddit thread. I should know better by now though, because Reddit users always know what they are talking about it seems.  On May 16th 2013 I took a gamble and ordered the Juna Balconette bra by Cleo by Panache in black, and although it was coming from the UK to Canada I received it in less than a week. When it arrived I ripped it open as I ran into my room and locked the door (to the complaints and banging on the door from my children) and tried it on in front of my full length mirror. After doing the scoop and swoop technique I looked. It was like the clouds opened up and Angels started singing Hallelujah. I’m not lying, it was like a new pair of boobs. I tried it on with a t-shirt to see what kind of visual changes there would be and it was like night and day. I always had seams and noticeable bra lines, it was now smooth, and my boobs were up where they were supposed to be. I looked better, much better. I decided to reserve my judgement until I wore it all day, so after about 10 hours of new bra I realized that I had not adjusted my straps or band or cups, once that day. It stayed put, didn’t move or ride up. It was a bloody miracle. So much so that I immediately ordered another one in my new size in a nude.

I made a mistake with the second one though. I ordered the Porcelain underwired bra by Panache. While it fits properly it wasn’t a style made for my breasts. It didn’t push up to make the most of what I had, it kind of left them flat and me self conscience. So I learned two things with the experience a) what size I should be wearing in a bra and b) the Balconette style it best for me because they make the most of what little I have. My next purchase is going to be the Panache Tango Underwired Balconette. I have shared this story and these links with every woman in my life hoping to give them the same gift that my friend Stephanie gave me. I hope it helps you too.

Happy Bra hunting! XOXO

Carry-on Packing List for Rome

Note: The images of this post disappeared when Polyvore shut down. Unfortunately they did so suddenly and I did not have time to salvage them. But I have a couple of newer versions of this post that can be found here, and here that are more up to date. Thanks 🙂

I live in Toronto so that means cold winters. It hasn’t been that bad this year and I actually am one of the few who like winter, but there comes a time (usually in February) where you think, “I miss warm weather.” Don’t get me wrong. I really dislike the humid heat of our summers but I do miss being able to walk around without having to wear six layers of clothes and having my hood blown down every time I turn around. I want to take the girls bike riding to discover our new neighbourhood. I don’t even know if we have any parks in walking distance since we moved here during the cold of November. My February doldrums came slightly early this year and Roo my 10 year old and I have been reading about ancient Rome so I thought, “wouldn’t it be amazing to take a trip to Rome right now”. So I decided to indulge myself and make a packing list. I tried to make sure that everything (but the suitcase, watch, Kimono dress and pumps) were $50 or under including sale prices. I chose a darker palette of grey, black, and white, with blue and green jewel tone accent pieces. My list consists of 15 pieces, plus accessories and shoes. I was able to come up with 40 different outfits with options for more if you layer things. Everything should fit into a carry-on if you wear one of the outfits on the plane. Packing Light in a Carry on – Dublin Edition

Edit: The image in this post no longer loads due to Polyvore closing down, so you can see the newly updated What to Pack for Dublin, Ireland in this post

Anyone that knows me, knows that I am having major wanderlust. I have a deep need to travel and hope to one day be lucky enough that I am able to fulfil that desire.

I also have become obsessed with learning the skill of packing light. I think that being able to pack for a vacation using just a carry-on would make travel so much easier and so much more simple.

Any time we have gone away in the past I way over packed. When we went to Barbados I packed so much, it was completely ridiculous and kind of obnoxious.

It was funny though because all I wore were two skirts, two shirts, one pair of shorts, a dress and two swimsuits.

Plus the clothes I wore on the plane which don’t really count because it was winter where we left from and the clothes reflected that. I could have easily packed in the suitcase my daughter used and still had room for more.

So over the last few years, I have tried to hone the packing light skill. I have read articles, blogs, watched videos and found ideas on Pinterest which I post to my Travel Board.

I pick my “destination”, go through my closet and find things that would be suitable for that climate and then go on the Polyvore website.

Polyvore is where I build my outfits and make my packing list collages. I go through to find pieces similar to what I own and build my travel wardrobe based on those pieces. That is why it is important to me to buy clothes that go with what I already own.

To be able to mix and match within my wardrobe makes packing light easy.

I start with a palette in a neutral shade. Usually black, grey and white since my wardrobe has a lot of different variations of these shades.

Then I add some colour with jewellery, scarves, shoes, or handbags. Every bottom should go with every top, everything should be able to be layered if the weather changes and the looks should be able to be dressed up or down with accessories and shoes.

This weeks inspiration came from The Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning. I am highly anticipating the release of Burned, the 7th book in the series on January 20th, 2015.

This Urban Fantasy series takes place in Dublin, Ireland. The weather in Dublin changes often and many of those changes can happen within the same day, so it is best to dress in layers and be prepared for rain.

It is high on my “want to visit” list (also on my “want to move to” list) and based on my wardrobe, this is what I would pack for it. If you have any questions feel free to drop me a comment below or use my contact form if you want to keep it private. Thanks!

What I would wear on the plane:

A white, loose tank, black oversized sweater, skinny blue jeans, black leather jacket, grey infinity scarf, red Hunter Wellies, and a large handbag.

What I would pack:

  1. Two loose tanks, black and grey.
  2. One grey, one white, loose fitting T-shirts.
  3. White blouse.
  4. Two heavy knit pullovers, grey and off white.
  5. One lighter knit pullover, grey with black sleeves.
  6. Oversized grey cardigan.
  7. Black “leather” pants.
  8. Black fitted dressy pants.
  9. Black maxi dress.
  10. Black leggings (for casual wear or pyjamas)
  11. Grey long sleeved shirt (casual or pyjamas)
  12. Pyjama set
  13. Socks
  14. Underwear
  15. One black and one nude bra.
  16. Black Frye boots Valerie model
  17. Converse sneakers
  18. Leopard slip on shoe
  19. Black panama hat.
  20. Grey beanie toque
  21. Two necklaces
  22. Multistrand bracelet
  23. Nixon Watch
  24. Black infinity scarf
  25. Aviators
  26. Red lipstick
  27. Umbrella

Happy Packing!

Things I Love on Etsy

I think I first heard about Etsy around 4 years ago when a baby birth board acquaintance of mine announced she was crocheting baby hats/headbands and opening an online store. I quickly became obsessed with all the great things I could find and it has become a regular place to shop when I am looking for unique and special gifts. I was going to make a wish list and write about all the things I want from Etsy (which is endless) but decided that I would first talk about some of my favourite things that I have bought from there over the years. Most of my list is compiled of things that I have purchased for my kids except the map pillow and the Mr. Tea mug (my mug is pink). Those two were a treat for myself after pining for them for at least a year before I saved up and bought them. I love, love, love Etsy. I love how I love how I am able to find things that are so in tune to my kid’s personalities.  One kid loves Harry Potter and Doctor who, while the other loves yellow, dressing up as animals, and her nickname is squirrel. Every time I go on here I find more great things to add to my list.

The Year I Kept a Resolution

I know this is being written after New Years but I had thought I had posted this January 1st. Apparently I didn’t post and ended up deleting the entire thing instead. Whoops. I will blame that on imbibing too much New Years Eve. Hubby had to work so I was home with the kids solo. They drank water out of an empty wine bottle and I drank sparking wine, after fighting to get it open and spraying it up the wall and on the kids (who ended up smelling like little alcoholics.) It was fun though. We watched fireworks from our balcony, wore fancy hats and greeted the New Year as a family.

On New Years day I noticed the barrage of memes for New Years as I scrolled through my Facebook newsfeed. Inspirational quotes, funnies, and the ones that mock (also funny). I saw this one the most though. I don’t know if it is actually a quote by Brad Paisley or if it is one of those “if it is said enough, people believe it” deals. I don’t really care because I actually had to Google “Brad Paisley” to ensure he was actually who I thought he was. I’m obviously not a country fan. I just kind of like though quote even if it has a little bit of cheese factor.

For the first time in my life I actually followed through with a resolution this year. I am trying to learn french and I promised myself that I would do some kind of French studying each day for the year. My minimum requirement was to complete a lesson or two in Duolingo each day and add things to it when I had time. As of January 1st I had fulfilled my year resolution! Check out the 365 say streak beside the little picture of the fire below.

Screen Shot 2014-12-31 at 4.59.27 PMThe OCD in me won’t allow me to stop working on it each day until I complete the whole French tree. That is not a bad thing so maybe that will be my minor resolution this year.

My main resolution is to be able to do a yoga handstand without the support of a wall. We shall see if I am being over confident in my abilities. Overall fitness would be great but I figure if I work at this handstand I will have some semblance of fitness at the end since you need a strong core to lift yourself up. I do have a skinny fat problem and need to tone it up, so along with working on the handstand I will do both yoga and HIIT with (Bodyrock.tv) each week. Fitness resolutions are so cliche but I am definitely not getting any younger, noticing some sag in not happy areas and would really like to improve the way I feel about myself.

Here’s hoping that I don’t waste any potential exercise time on binge watching Friends on Netflix.

Happy 2015 xo

The Wish of This Stay at Home Mom

Once again I start the new year off as a stay at home mom*. As a stay at home mom I often have the same pipe dream wishes as many other moms out there. Life with a maid, chef, trainer, chauffeur…. These are those things that float through your mind when you finally get that relaxing bath at the end of the day (or middle of the day depending on nap schedules).  You know, those first few moments after you slip into the hot water and exhale deeply. In between that exhalation and when the door bursts open and children come running in screeching like tiny Viking marauders. Those wishes are common and usually follow a long, hard day, a never-ending pile of laundry, dishes, or after realizing your favourite pants are getting a little bit snug.

But shocking as it is, that hasn’t been on my mind much. What has been on my mind a lot lately is something of a different manner. I don’t know if it is because it is the season for after Christmas spending guilt, or just the roller coaster of life, but I have noticed a lot of women I know have been talking about their financial struggles at home recently. More than once I have heard someone say, “I love staying at home with the kids, but man I wish I could contribute financially to the family.” I am not going to be arrogant and surmise that every stay at home mom wants this, but the women I interact with daily, friends of friends, family, things I have read from women who are also stay at home moms. All these women seem to mention at some time or another that they wish that they could contribute financially to their family but also remain home. So the wish seems to be for more job opportunities for us who choose to stay at home to raise our kids, but would also like to do something more.

That really doesn’t seem to be a lot to ask and I am sure to some it is not. To a lot of us though, we just don’t have the what they are looking for. Passed by without even a second glance. I’m not talking about jobs making money sewing, knitting or crafting on Etsy. While I love to buy those things (I have a huge Etsy list) and admire people who have the talent to do it, I am not a crafty person. I am more booky and technical. So everything that I see for any type of home based work I could do, needs either a) a lot of experience, or b) some degree that takes many years to get. I don’t have either. I have about 10 years experience working in retail. More than half of those years were managerial positions. I spent four years in college and took three different things. I didn’t finish any of those degrees due to an unfortunate bad decision on my behalf (sorry mom and dad). I took Museum Studies, Travel and Tourism, Marketing, and for shits and giggles I took a semester accounting course several years ago just to see if I could do it. I could.

So while I have a some varied school experience, I never finished any of it therefore I might as well have not taken anything. Which is frustrating because the last time I was in school was 2003 and I JUST finished paying off my loans in 2013. It was all for nothing. I pretty much paid a lot of money to party, live on my own, excessively drink, go to keggers, and eat a lot of street meat. I can’t even go back and try to finish these degrees because after a certain amount of time they become null and void and you have to start over. So that was a decade of loan payments for a whole lot of nothing which makes me sad of the lost opportunity. I would do a lot better if I went to school at this age than I ever did in my early 20’s since I am in a completely different mindset. I no longer believe I am invincible.

Back to my complete lack of experience and education. I can’t do anything from home because I am not “qualified”. I’m smart though, I work hard, I am really good at figuring out how to do stuff on my own, and I am willing to learn like a lot of friends of mine that are in the same boat. But in this day and age they don’t want to have to invest any time into you to teach you anything. They want to be able to say your hired, here is your work, submit when complete. And if you can’t do that the next person in line will. I know there is a lot of us out there, sitting at home just wishing there was something else we could do. Some way to help to alleviate the burden of sole financial responsibility so why hasn’t someone solved this dilemma yet? I mean, there is a huge market worldwide of us SAHM’s and I have never come across anything that is attainable without a list of credentials or a portfolio. That is the Catch 22. I need to go back to school to get qualified to get a job but I can’t afford to go back to school, so I need a job. It is the never ending roundabout and I am just so dizzy and so tired of going around.

The second job I ever had (aside from babysitting) was for a small boutique. I didn’t have any experience in retail at that point but I was young, charming and willing to work. Several years later when the business closed, I remember my boss telling me on our final day “You were the best chance I ever took.” I walked home crying that day.  I wish I could stick that on my resume and use it as my selling point.

*Every time I say stay at home mom, I actually mean stay at home parent. I don’t want to not be inclusive of those stay at home dads too. I am just talking from my own experience of myself and women I know.
