Settlements in Salzburg are old. There have been Neolithic human settlements found in the area but the first settlements that continue to present are from the Celts in the 5th century. It has Roman ties and was once named Juvinum, and then the Roman Province of Noricum. The name Salzburg means “Salt Castle” and comes from the barges that were subject to tolls as they carried salt down the Salzach River.
Its Old Town is known for its baroque architecture and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. It is famous for being the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and was the setting for the musical play and film The Sound of Music (which is actually my favourite movie which baffles my husband).
The temperature in Salzburg ranges from 3°C in January to 24.4°C in July. It is classified as a continental temperate climate, and because if its proximity to the northern rim of the Alps it has high precipitation, mainly in the summer months.
In this What to Pack for Salzburg, Austria I have included 22 items in the above packing light list which breaks down to be 12 items of clothing to mix and match + Coat + Shoes + Accessories. Both the dress and the jumpsuit work double jobs when layered, one as a skirt, and the other as a pair of pants. This list is for more of the cooler months but could easily be made a summer list with a few substitutions. Outfit options and ideas will be in the next post.
Salzburg is one of my Christmas time dream destinations. Do you have a city you would like to visit during the Christmas season?
