What I Wore This Week 400

If you have been listening to me bitch the last few weeks about the fan coil maintenance people, then you might have seen my vent about my clutter on Instagram stories.

Because I am my own worst enemy, and I swear to myself that I will get my shit together to get stuff organised so I don’t have the stress and panic of being overwhelmed.

I spent quite a while trying to get things in order last week for their arrivals so they could have easy access. Which meant some moving things around, and a lot of hiding things in closets, and embarrassingly…also the bathtubs.

Yes, both bathtubs.

I thought I did well, but the guys who came in, plus the security guard who accompanies them to each, kept commenting on how much stuff we have, which is so embarrassing.

So yes, I have decided that getting it together is no longer optional, but a priority. I need to seriously figure this small space out, and how to make it work best for us.

Summer is almost half over now, so I am going to use this last half to figure it out, which led to some searching online for ideas.

Sometimes I wonder what happened to the young girl who spent her allowance on home decorating magazines. I am certain she is still in there somewhere, I just wish that she would show her face periodically.

Canada does not have a lot of options for places to shop home decor that are not stupid expensive. We have Ikea and JYSK, along with Winners/Home Sense.

Plus places like Walmart and Amazon Canada are often pricey for junky stuff so it can be frustrating.

I also hit up thirft stores, Facebook Market Place, and Kijiji, which can definitely have good stuff for a deal, but are sometimes hard to navigate when you are looking for something specific since people on there usually don’t put a lot of effort into their listings.

Although I do have a tentative agreement for a closet organiser for my husband’s closet for $10, but that isn’t what I am currently looking for.

My goal is to try to make the best use of this small space and find things that will aid in that. It is only 850 sq ft in here with four people, so it can be a bit overwhelming.

I have shopped on Wayfair Canada before for household pieces like some mirrors for my girls, wardrobe organisers for their bedrooms, desks/desktop shelving all to try and help them get their small rooms functioning better too.

So I spent some time on there last night as I was recovering from my embarrassment, to source some ideas that I thought would be a good start to get us heading in the right direction because they are having a summer sale, plus I can pay it off over time.

That’s a big one for me.

The apartment is a corner unit, so it is oddly shaped, which means there are small areas that are not usable for regular furniture.

In this instance, I think corner shelving might work. First I saw this one and was all like “I need colour, and whimsy, with a little touch of Dr Seuss.”

But then I saw this one that obviously will hold more, and while it lacks in whimsy, it has in nostalgia.

It reminds me of the round spinning shelves you would see in the library and bookstores that held comics and soft-cover novels.

I remember spinning those to find a new Choose Your Own Adventure book when I was younger, and Fear Street and Christopher Pike when I was a bit older.

So I am torn on which one.

Next idea: I have realised the resell part of my life is taking over areas of the house. I so wish that I could have a dedicated spot for this, but that is not possible, so better organisation is key.

My current standing rack was a cheap buy, and you can tell because it is completely leaning to the left, and is held upright with a bungee cord.

I bought this one for my youngest last year since her bedroom does not have an actual closet, and it does a really good job.

It’s cheaper now than it was then, so I think that one will be good, plus the shelves will work with small storage bins for smaller items like accessories.

And speaking of storage bins, I bought some large soft exterior zip-up storage bags off Amazon a long while back, and they were just okay; some of the straps ripped off when I lifted them the first time, which was annoying and makes them hard to move now because they are heavy.

I saw these, and I like the handle placement much better, as well as the clear panel in the middle so you can see in the bag.

One of my biggest struggles right now with this lack of organisation is not being able to figure out what bin something that I sold is in.

Sometimes I swear it takes more time to find it than it is worth. So that needs to be rectified. I like to try and follow that “work smarter, not harder” saying, but I often epically fail.

And lastly, I talked about this in my last post briefly. I need to get control of the shoe overpopulation in the front hall. I personally keep mine well organised in my own closet.

Apparently no one else follows my example, and they just kick them off and leave a million pairs in the front hall. We still have winter boots sitting there when it is way past winter boots season.

In my panic clean, I ended up putting them in the grocery shopping basket that my Instacart shopper stole and left for me to deal with. I was like, “what the hell am I going to do with this?”

Hold shoes. That is what I am doing with it.

So instead, I was thinking one of those shoe storage shelves that are thin with the little drop-down doors. It can’t be anything big and clunky because of the place it needs to go.

Anything too wide will impede the opening of the laundry room door. So I first saw this one, which is sleek and minimal, but then I saw this one with the rattan panels and the legs to keep it elevated, and I am not sure.

I have a poll going on in my Instagram stories for the next few hours if you want to help me make up my mind.

As you can see, I am very indecisive, but I am determined, which I guess is a good thing.

And before I sign off, I saw that they have brought my Napoleon jacket for fall. I like when they bring back past season favourites.
