I am seeing all the “mom, what were you like in the 90s?” video montages on Instagram, and I realised that I don’t have a lot of photos of myself from the 90s.
We just didn’t really have a camera around much until after 2000, and I have a lot more random Y2K era photos than 90s.
Which kind of makes me sad, but also made sense. So I don’t know how these people have so much photographic evidence from that era.
It made me remember when I was in high school, maybe grade 10 or 11, during the last exams before summer, and my friend Jen, and kind of friend Stacey, decided they wanted to shoplift from the little store in the plaza next to the high school.
My other friend and I were like, “nope, we will be sitting over there waiting,” while pointing to the patch of grass on the opposite side of the parking lot.
So we sat and waited while they came in and out several times with stolen merchandise.
Then we watched as the cops pulled up.
Us sitting there probably looked like the modern-day equivalent of the Michael Jackson eating popcorn meme.
Anyway, they went back too many times and got caught. Jen spent the summer doing community service hours. I’m not sure about Stacey.
Shoplifting was never my thing, even in the 90s when it was easy to get away with it. Although I did take a street sign, and stole someone’s cat in like 2002-ish.
In my defence, I did not seek out the cat, she followed me home at 2 o’clock in the morning and came in when I invited her. She made her choice.
So I am kind of glad there is no photographic evidence.
