Today I have a post for what to pack for Rome and the Amalfi Coast in the Early Fall. Early October to be exact.

It is important to note that many hotels and businesses on the Amalfi Coast starts to shut down for the season halfway through October, so it’s a good idea to ensure that the sites you want to see are going to be open if your plan on visiting after the 15th.

The average temperature for the Amalfi Coast in October is a high of 22°C and the average temperature of Rome in October is 19°C with each day getting an average of eight hours of sunshine.

As the sun goes down the weather can get a little chilly dropping to a low of 11°C, so you will want to have a couple of warmer pieces in your travel capsule that you can layer when you go out for the evening. You may also want to bring a trench coat if the weather is predicted to be cooler than average.

I included an oversized cashmere cardigan, blazer, and a warmer scarf for this reason. You could add a moto jacket or something waterproof to cover all bases if you wanted.

Italians love leather and a you will blend in anywhere with a great leather jacket. You can also find many wonderful handmade leather items as well, so pare down your travel wardrobe to keep some room open in your carry-on suitcase.

On the opposite end, I also included a couple of dresses that will work in warmer weather, as well as a pair of trousers that can easily be cuffed to work as culottes.

The Tyrrhenian Sea which is located off the western coast of Italy stays at around 22°C even at this time of year so there is still the potential to do some swimming and snorkelling. So if you plan to travel to Italy in October, then don’t forget to include a swimsuit in your Italy packing list.

Obviously there are no guarantees with weather. October and November are Italy’s rainy season, so you also want to be prepared for this. In this packing list I included a pair of boots that are both chic, and waterproof which will work perfectly.

They also have a huge amount of positive reviews across various retailers and always rank high as a comfortable and stylish travel shoes. They also have a short stacked heel which is perfect for maneuvering the cobblestone streets and will be the perfect addition to any european packing list.

I was asked to include some really comfortable travel shoes today. What shoes to wear in Italy keeps coming up,  so I searched online and read tons of reviews and there were a few pairs that are mentioned over and over.

The Allbirds running shoe has been a consistently recommended travel shoe and is always listed as one of the most comfortable travel sneakers. As for a dressier shoe for travel the ever chic Demi ballet flat by Margaux always seems to rank at the top of travel shoe lists as well.

Or if you just want to wear your favourite pair of understated Nike’s to blend in with the Italian style (apparently they are popular in Rome). You can just add a comfort insole to make them work for all day wear.

An Italian travel wardrobe should always include a scarf because as soon as the wind starts to blow you will notice people breaking out their scarves.

They are also lightweight and easy to pack in a carry-on or throw into your purse, making them perfect travel accessories. Also, don’t forget your sunglasses and hat because the sun is still pretty intense along the Mediterranean at this time of year.

If you want to see the historic weather trends for each destination you can look it up on wunderground.com. The general consensus across the travel forums is that this is the perfect time of year for travel, and the weather will be awesome. What more can you ask for?

Have you watched GLOW yet? I kept bypassing it on Netflix but a friend of mine mentioned how good it was so I gave it a shot. No joke, it’s one of the best tv shows I’ve seen. I thought it was going to be just about female Wrestling, but it has some very complex women and relationships in it.

I mentioned this because I was inspired by the soundtrack which is also incredible (along with the fashion) to include a Journey t-shirt in today’s Rome packing list. I picked one in a darker print to make it more understated.

I have added so many new songs to my favourite Spotify Playlist thanks to this tv show. You should go watch GLOW now and let me know if you liked it 🙂

  1. Sara, I love your posts, both through mail and the photos you post in instagram of what you wear during the week. I particularly love that you always include a printed scarf on your wardrobe capsules. Could you show me how you wear them? Im also in my 40s and I love scarves. Specially these printed “silky” ones. I just sometimes cant find hip ways to wear them so as not to make them look too preppy. Thank you! Love you!!

    • Hi Gaby! Thanks for the idea. I occasionally wear them in my hair kind of like a messy headband. You can see it in some of my Instagram photos. If it’s too silky I’ll just slide in a bobby pin or two to keep it in place. I don’t think I’ve taken any pictures with it actually tied as a scarf though 😂 I’m going to make sure that I get some photographic evidence of me when I do next time. I like to wear them on my hair because it’s an easy way to make my hair look decent when I skip a hair wash 😁

    • I don’t see why not as long as the weather agrees. The water will make the air feel colder at night but by day I’m sure you’ll get use out of them. I’d just keep tabs on the weather channel until you go 🙂
