In yesterday’s post I talked about what kind of clothing you could bring if you were going on a trip that would involve mixed climates. Being prepared for hot and sunny, to cool and rainy, or cold using one suitcase sounds pretty hard. It can be made easier if you stick to a general list. This list consists of clothing options that every wardrobe already has in it, usually in multiples. The idea behind it is to have clothes that can both be layered and worn as separates, tights allow you to wear skirts and dresses in cooler weather and shoes that will cover hot to cold weather.

My basic list consists of:

  • a camisole or tank
  • t-shirt in a solid colour (darker is easier to hide stains and get more wear)
  • long sleeve in a print or solid. I like stripes.
  • blouse (white can be dressed up easily but a chambray is a good casual option)
  • a dressy top in whatever colour for style you choose as long as it matches every bottom
  • 2 jeans (one casual, one darker denim. I don’t like shorts but you could swap out for a pair)
  • black pants or dress pants (black is always easy to dress up in a pinch)
  • pullover
  • cardigan
  • a skirt in your preferred length (could also swap for shorts or another dress but a skirt gives more options)
  • dress (I usually pick a Little black dress because there are so many options with a LBD)
  • swimsuit (or not, but it would be nice to have just in case)
  • jacket (The type of jacket depends on how cold it will be and how comfortable you are in cooler weather. I can easily wear a leather jacket with a sweater layered underneath until it is quite cold out. For others this may not be feasible)

Once you get a basic idea of what items you tend to pack it is easy to make your own list to use as a guideline for each trip you take. Like I mentioned yesterday, I take the pieces on each list and form them into outfits like the 10 above and 10 below (with many more to make) to have a visual of how each item will be worn. This will help to avoid feeling like you have nothing to wear and buying clothes on your trip to remedy that.

Do you plan out all the outfits you may wear on your trip beforehand, or bring a lot of clothes and hope for the best?
