Today we are talking about what to pack for Riga, Latvia in Autumn. When I was in college my friend was friends as well as classmates with a Latvian student. This led to some party nights with his fellow Latvian friends which always involved some Gin shots with pickle chasers.

I don’t know if they were bullshitting us, but they claimed that was how it is done in Latvia. That actually might be true since there is a recipe for gin & tonic pickles.

I just remember the pickle flavour being a reprieve from the strong pine cleaner taste of the Gin. Which reminds me that I need to find a drink that I like because at this moment I can’t think of any drink combinations that would be my go-to. I’m a “when in doubt, order red wine” kind of person.

As far Europeans vacations go people always tend to choose the popular, more mainstream destinations over the lesser-known, not as touristy.

In doing that they just pass up some gems like Latvia.

It’s located in Eastern Europe and is a huge tourist destination during the summer months for its 18 hours of sunlight and Baltic Sea coastlines. But if you go in the off-season, when the tourists dwindle and the prices start to drop you can have an affordable and memorable vacation.

Riga has a huge medieval vibe with old castles, half-timbered houses, and cobblestones streets, which are all major draws in my books.

Food, hotel, and transportation are all very cheap (especially in the off-season) even more so when compared to its neighbouring Scandinavian cities.

Plus, it’s small enough that you can see many of the sites on foot which makes everything even more budget-friendly. There is also internet connection everywhere, and most of it is free. #win

This packing list is for a late October-early November for 10 days in Riga, Latvia. It’s when the weather starts to get colder but the snow has not yet fallen and stuck (although it tends to not stick for very long anyway).

But if you love snow and winter vacations then Riga it quite magical at Christmas as well with its Christmas markets and festivities. Who doesn’t love a Christmas market?

If you are looking for a European vacation but don’t want to fight the crowds or pay the costs of the more popular destinations, than Riga, Latvia might be the perfect choice for you.
